20.01.2022 I’m so fortunate to have the support of incredible owners year in, year out. I truly appreciate the lengths and efforts people go to, to keep me safe and comfortable and by far this owner and client is exceptional and sets the benchmark. 3 different years 2 sparkling bay ponies 1 committed owner... Upon arrival the horses are always ready to go, standing under cover, clean and dry! Now can I get you a coffee, cold drink, is there anything you need? Gosh I LOVE my clients. My next Southern run will be Sunday 7th June, it’s almost fully booked as it is. If you need your horse clipped in the meantime, please contact Jemma at All Breeds Clip'n'Clean Grooming & Paw Impressions Jemma is an experienced horse owner and professional groomer! She’s located in Acton Park however, will travel is required. I love being able to give customers the best alternatives if in the event I cannot provide an appointment. 19.01.2022 An open letter to my clients, Thank you for your ongoing support over the last 3 years, as Prue’s Equine has become bigger then I ever anticipated. To that effect, I have made the heart breaking choice to make big cut backs, and reduce my workload. I cannot continue to work full time during the week, and work 14 hour days on weekends trimming and clipping horses. I have 5 horses of my own here that are not getting the time, care or training they need and this is never what ...I set out to do. I miss family celebrations, all because my diary is so jam packed trying to please everyone and look after everyone’s horses. People neglect to understand or appreciate that I don’t just rock up, trim your horse, take your money and leave. I care lots about each and every horse I see, lay my hands on, pick their feet up and engage with. Just because a horse is not mine does never mean that I don’t care. Some of my client horses have caused me more grief, and sleepless nights then that of my own. To which effect, I will be taking every 3rd and 6th weekend off. These weekends may change from time to time with family commitments, celebrations, horse shows or learning workshops. The end goal is to only trim every second weekend to allow myself time with my young horses in setting them up for a good future. I cannot continue at the rate I am, I have not taken on any new regular clients in the last 10 months and it has been incredibly hard saying no sorry I can’t. I have a full time job that requires the best of me, and I wish to give the best I have. If you are comfortable seeking the services of another hoof care provider, I would love to encourage and guide with that process, I have a list of preferred professionals in the areas I service that are willing to take on my clients. I can do hand overs, provide the client notes (if relevant) and overview of each horse if necessary. I understand that not everyone will feel comfortable with the services of another provider especially if I have rehabbed your horse or pony to some degree or another and that is perfectly understandable, those clients know who they are and I have worked far too hard getting the horses and ponies comfortable and moving to let them fall back to the way they were. I will not be offended if you choose to use the services of someone else, I won’t be upset or angry. Life is too short for that. If you are willing and open to the idea of using someone else, I’m happy to help guide that process and make suggestions based upon your horses needs. Please understand where I am coming from as I simply want to spend more time with my own horses. Thanks to each and everyone of you that had supported me as my business has grown beyond belief.

13.01.2022 When you’ve come from a farming background you can appreciate a good set of sock savers/sock covers/gators. Whipped up a couple of super duty pairs for a friend this afternoon, made from light canvas with adjustable elastic. Ready for use and abuse!

13.01.2022 If I’ve trimmed your horse lately, you’ve probably seen my little clip lock container with a grey paste, well what is it?! It’s Prue’s Paddock Paste! My own homeopathic remedy that may help reduce the impact and aid in the treatment of thrush in the collateral grooves and deep central sulcus cases. What’s in it?... - French Green Clay - Zinc Oxide - Raw Locally Sourced Honey - Eucalyptus Oil - Tea Tree Oil The beauty of the internet is the availability of information when you go looking for it, and personal research and information about making your own similar products pointed to these ingredients for the following reasons. French Green Clay is commonly used in the beauty industry. It’s benefits include removing impurities, stimulating the skin and increasing blood flow to the epidermis. Zinc Oxide is best known for its capabilities of protecting the skin from UV rays, however boasts other benefits. While lightly astringent, it also has antiseptic properties, it reduces tenderness and inflammation. Zinc oxide also promotes and facilitates the growth of new tissue. Raw honey is best known for it’s antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It aids in balancing bacteria; the good and the bad and speeds up the healing speed of skin cells. Eucalyptus oil has lots of benefits, it’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties are certainly some of its better known benefits second only to its airway cleansing smell! Paired with its cousin, Tea tree, the two boast similar anti inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Both soothe the epidermis, while tea tree triggers the production of white blood cells. If your horse has some thrush when trimmed, the paddock paste is a consistency that when applied will stay put for atleast 3-5 days, kickstarting the treatment process. This is not a miracle remedy and does not replace a good hoof health and care regime. Thrush can become a serious problem if left unchecked and I strongly suggest consulting a veterinary professional in more serious cases.

12.01.2022 Clipping, a question I’ve been posed with frequently the last few weeks, so to avoid repeating myself I thought I’d give you all an update. Covid-19 is providing a level of uncertainty that none of us could have forecasted. One thing for certain is that I will still be providing my clipping services to the equine community this coming season. ... There will be a few changes, however one thing is easy! If you’re getting hair on you, you’re not maintaining a good social distance. If I’ve clipped your horse before, I’m comfortable to clip them with minimal assistance if any. Pricing; the price for Full clips and comfort clips will remain the same, however I’m dropping the price on partial clips! I will be reducing Blanket and Irish Clips to $80, down from $95! Modified sporting and bib clips will remain on a job to job basis. Travel; I will be charging fair travel rates for areas outside of usual service, quotable per job. Group pricing; I welcome group bookings and multiple horses at one property. Group pricing reduces travel rates and for larger groups, there is a discount of full clips. Serviceable areas; I travel around Tasmania on a regular basis. I have already taken bookings from the South, and will be servicing the North and North West pending travel restrictions. Please note I do work a full time job, so I am as flexible as I can be, within good reason. If you have a suitable undercover area with lights, that provides even better flexibility! Here comes the but Some horses require a little help when it comes to clipping, if you know that your horse requires sedation to be clipped safely, this is your responsibility. I will not under any circumstances administer any sedation, as the owner this is your responsibility. I will not clip your horse if you couldn’t be bothered to wash it. Period. I will not clip your horse if it’s wet. Period. Please be organised, scrub your horse with shampoo, multiple times if necessary. My equipment is expensive, I don’t want to have to replace $800+ clippers because you couldn’t be bothered. I will do a video in the coming weeks of how to wash your horse appropriately for a clip. Remember, the best finish comes from the best start. A clean horse, is a clean finish. Given the current state of affairs, I have no issues with anyone wishing to have a crack at clipping their own horse this year, in fact I encourage it. Please, if you have any queries, do not hesitate to ask. I’m only too happy to help.

08.01.2022 A La Niña weather event has been declared for the coming Spring and Summer, so what does that mean for you, your horses and your horses welfare and wellbeing? A La Niña will see a wet Spring with increased growth, horses already at high risk and grazing on stressed pastures will be even more at danger, maintenance is key. Shorter trim cycles, keeping intake at a moderated constant, and getting the diet right is imperative. ... What else does it mean? Well it’s going to be warm and wet. A horse is better to be without a rug, than to be in a rug that leaks or a rug that you they won’t breathe in. A horse that is sweating or in a leaking rug is at higher risk of developing rain scald. Look after your horses, get their management right. Talk to your practitioners around you and get the advice that keeps your horse healthy and happy. There is not a one size fits all approach, every horse is an individual and should be treated that way.

07.01.2022 With limited shows on the foreseeable immediate horizon, our float got dropped into Trayco Metal Fabrication in Launceston for some routine maintenance and a couple of minor repairs. So often do we take the safety and integrity of our float for granted. A good maintenance program, and atleast a yearly service and check over is best for float longevity and reducing the risk of those cheeky unexpected breakdowns! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the age of your tyres. While they possibly won’t run out of tread, they can become old and brittle increasing the risk of a blow out exponentially!

06.01.2022 Understanding equine nutrition is far beyond punching figures into feedXL. Equine nutrition is understanding how individuals metabolise nutrients, vitamins and minerals, understanding interactions between key elements of a horses diet and what this means for your horse. Don’t be bluffed by sales pitches, pretty bags, and clever marketing. ... Ask the questions of the right people, seek the answers for your horse.

06.01.2022 Gut health. The big white elephant in the room. What are you doing to help your horse this spring and long term. It’s no secret that I preach low starch, high fibre, omega 3 enriched diets. Australian made from Australian Organicly grown hemp seed. Hemp is a relatively untapped potential for the use in equine health, but the health benefits for humans and companion animals is proving hugely beneficial. ... If hemp is something you would like to try, don’t bring afraid to reach out and get in touch with myself or Black Horse Naturals. There are big things happening in this space and I would love to tell you more about the benefits of hemp for your horse.

05.01.2022 The importance of salt in the horses diet. With the cold winter weather creeping in, it’s a timely reminder about the absolute importance that salt plays in a horses diet especially in the winter. Salt, Sodium Chloride; the key often missing in horses diets, especially in the colder months. ... So what crucial part does salt play in your horses diet? Let’s break it down. Sodium is a key chain in the functional efficiency of the central nervous system! What does that mean? Well when salt, more specifically sodium, depletes in the circulatory system, so does water. Blood volume decreases. In addition to blood volume decrease, when circulating sodium decreases, as does the thirst indicator of a horse, therefore a horse can dehydrate faster. So why is salt important again? Well, in winter time we often feed our horses more bulk and coarse roughage. Roughage requires more water to digest fully, therefore a higher water intake is required to process this additional roughage we feed to keep our horses warm. But I’m not riding my horse through winter so I don’t need to feed salt or electrolytes? Winter time is when you need to be most vigilant of feeding salt as reduced water intake, leads to dehydration which can also lead to impaction colic. How much salt should I feed? 15g per 250kg of body weight is a sensible amount. Not hard feeding? Horses with ad lib access to salt blocks ie coarse granules, lick blocks or rock salt, should on average consume around 1kg of salt per month. If your horse is in work, it is worth considering adding a base electrolyte to your horses ration. Kohnke's Own Cell Salts is a cost effective electrolyte concentrate. It doesn’t contain a salt filler, and is therefore fed at 1:1 Cell Salts:rock salt. You should expect to pay around $30 for a 2kg cylinder making it very affordable! If your horse is a heavy sweater or suffers from anhidrosis, then consult the qualified team of Equine nutritionists at Kohnke’s Own for a customised ration to suit your horse, your situation and your exercise regime. So this winter, don’t forget to pass your horse the salt!

03.01.2022 The post I’ve written, and deleted many times. Today someone said to me gosh you must give off the right vibe, my horse is never this relaxed! A little bit of horsemanship goes a hell of a long way. By far, my favourite quote. I can’t tell you who I heard say it or who said it first, but it has always spoke volumes to me. ... I’ll be honest, I’m not a Parelli fan, previous super fans put me off long ago but I’ve met some people lately that have helped me to reconsider. No, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you need to become the next Parelli expert, but what I will tell you to do is go out and learn. But why Parelli? It is a great learning resource that is so readily available, someone you know may even have it. Level 1 & 2 covers what I feel are Horse ownership pre requisites I want people to learn and understand what makes horses, horses. Why you need to be conscious of your energy, focus, and most important your agenda. Don’t talk to your horse with negativity, don’t scream at your horse, choose to make a positive difference, learn how to be a leader and be constructive with your energy. It doesn’t matter who you choose to learn from, just be proactive. Make the conscious choice to do better and be better, not only for you, but your horse will thank you too.
