25.01.2022 PIF Q&A on psychiatry training and careers

25.01.2022 "'It's a stressful time, and we are in the very unique position of helping people to manage their stressors around something we are simultaneously experiencing", says Dr Skye Kinder, a registrar psychiatrist at a large public hospital. "One of the positives I've seen in the pandemic is at least at the junior level there's a lot of collegiality and looking out for peers and colleagues in the health sector, and a lot of open and frank discussion around the psychological impacts... ... Increasing opportunities to find resources is really important."' The Black Dog Institute has developed The Essential Network (or TEN) app to provide healthcare workers easy access to evidence-based mental health resources and specialists. 24.01.2022 'We dont need to pretend like everything is normal, because its not. We dont need to act like everything is okay, because its not. Our conversations seem to have shifted to be more real, and perhaps more open and vulnerable. As a psychiatrist, this makes me hopeful that we can finally normalize what it means to struggle with our mental health, because really, most of us are in some way or another.' Stigma and shame are big reasons people dont seek mental health. A psychiatrist offers some tips to help normalise mental health conversations in the article below. 'It is completely normal to struggle with our mental health, to ask for help, and to get treatment when we need it. Its about time we all say so out loud.'

08.01.2022 '"Its hard for the general population to admit that they have vulnerabilities, flaws and weaknesses, and I think that can potentially be even more difficult for doctors. Psychiatrist Dr Eli Kotler says doctors personalities often tend towards perfectionism and may therefore struggle to admit to having such issues. Dr Kotler says the first step in seeking help is 'admitting to ourselves' that there is an issue. The next step is speaking to someone about it, whether a good f...riend, spouse or another trusted person.' Learn how to get help here https://www.yourhealthinmind.org/get-help Read the article

07.01.2022 '"Isnt it depressing listening to peoples depressing stories all the time?" The intimacy of hearing peoples secret fears, sorrows, and joys is a kind of exposure to "real life" and human connection that often eludes us in our superficial social interactions. Such access to peoples inner worlds is a privilege of being a psychiatrist. It can definitely get "heavy" but usually isnt demoralizing, especially when were there with people as whatever theyre struggling with eventually fades away and they triumph, or even just cope, in the face of adversity.' A psychiatrist explores some common questions asked about the profession
