01.02.2022 When we got the ticket, we were not sure what to do with the fork. Reflecting on our varied experiences, we wanted to come up with a few simple rules to help others with the transition period. Transitioning from trainee to a fellow consultant psychiatrist feels like the line from the classic Green Day song: 'Another turning point a fork stuck in the road/ Time grabs you by the wrist directs you where to go.'... 13.01.2022 This piece had its genesis in the questions posed to co-author Associate Professor Mike Salzberg (Consultation-liaison psychiatrist) when teaching medical students and junior doctors. 08.01.2022 Glimpses from last nights interactive webinar with our expert panelists - Prof David Barton, Dr Megan Stewart and Prof Suresh Sundaram. The Topic was - Schizophrenia - Are we doing enough? Great discussion around systems in Australia when treating complex mental illness. Some points that were discussed: Prof Sundaram: ... The need for a transformative paradigm shift in thinking about the illness. A greater need for collaboration between Primary and Tertiary care. Thinking about Cognitive and Negative symptoms and not just positive symptoms. Putting mental health in general at the forefront of medicine. (high levels of disability but a disproportionately lower budget allocation) Prof Barton: Changing the name from schizophrenia (which carries societal stigma) to disintegration syndrome - the Japanese model. Creating spaces - not just headspace for youth but - a grey space (elderly); mid-space (adults) with GP practices co-located. Access to services not based on diagnosis but disability Dr Megan Stewart (GP) Annual health check for patients with schizophrenia - incentives for GPs Valuing the work of mental health nurses to bridge the gap between Primary and specialist care Specialists co-located in GP practices - reducing the mind-dichotomy We are planning other exciting discussions coming up soon.
