19.01.2022 On Sunday the PTCA-Australia hosted our special guest John Alexander. For over an hour and with 54 tennis loving people participating JA was happy to discuss his playing past, his thoughts on tennis today and ideas that can help the game grow moving forward. Here are the highlights discussed by the group: To understand where we are at today in Australian tennis we need to understand our history Australia was the first country in the world to establish a coaches associatio...n in NSW The role of the Australian Open and our governing body is to popularize the sport with the goal to perpetuate and boost participation in social tennis play and competition (the 3 P’s). The reason to have a tennis lesson is to learn how to: play compete join a club practice play socially. John recalled when his local Association in Sydney had 18 Grades of 8 Teams (with 6 players) playing Saturday afternoon competition tennis. Now there’s 1 Grade, with only 5 teams! The decline of tennis in this country is tragic. John as managing director helped establish very successful club models via Next Generation sporting clubs around Australia by co locating activities The Australian Open is fantastic but we should also focus our energy on developing tennis at grass roots He encouraged coaches to come together and create more innovative ways for families to play tennis, and lead the way to bring the game back to life See more

12.01.2022 Around 50 passionate coaches as well as Club and Association committee representatives shared a wealth of tennis knowledge in our latest zoom meetings. The discussion was based on a recent article in Fairfax media that predicted 1 in 4 clubs will not survive this current national sporting crisis. The PTCA Australia strongly support and are advocates for the three key pillars (3 C’s) of the Australian Tennis Community: -Clubs -Coaches ... -Competition (via Associations) Our zoom meeting discussion points included: The ongoing poor communication from Tennis Victoria to its stakeholders Confusion around what is available in terms of Grants to assist clubs, coaches and Associations who have all been severely impacted this year financially Why are (full or part) affiliation fees still payable by Clubs and Associations during this time Do MA’s really think simply deferring affiliation fees is a suitable solution especially here in Victoria. If financial support is not going to be directly available to local tennis clubs how can the State and National bodies justify so many staff and costly programs whilst grass roots, volunteer based community tennis is in crisis. Tasmanian coaches and clubs feel like they have been forgotten about all together Unanimously, we request much improved communication and transparency from both Member Associations and our national body and that all these governing bodies consider direct financial assistance to struggling community tennis clubs via a significant deduction or total absence of affiliation fees for 2020/2021. The zoom meeting participants believed that both TV and TA currently sit on significant financial reserves for emergency situations and that NOW would be the opportune time to utilize those funds and help the tennis community when it is most needed.
