25.01.2022 This post is purportedly about sun and shadows, filtered through the built layers forming our home at the change of seasons. Including the recycled hardwood shutter which provides privacy to this pavilion, while still allowing the view of creek, and green bamboo to wash the room... Though given we didnt need to stand up to create this post perhaps the work from home time is starting to show again after only a couple of weeks?... 25.01.2022 Spring weekend afternoon: welcome back after the crazy storms the day before. The deciduous trees and bulbs lay dormant through winter. 21.01.2022 Images of a homestead we designed for clients behind Byron Bay. They wanted the home to be formal, but reminiscent of traditional homestead on a productive property. The landscape across the site is designed to fall away from the home, opening to the views. The high windows at the roof peak open to a shared library space in the middle of the home, flooding it with natural light and venting summer heat. .... 20.01.2022 We made the cover of the latest issue of Renew Magazine. Well... Supposedly it was about the battery and the car - but we think its about the creek and carport! 20.01.2022 Charging, up the highway, (Too corny?) . Surreal that this was not possible only years ago. . Fast chargers can take you from Melbourne to Cairns, up the coast of Australia - with stops for lunch or a toilet break to recharge.... In Queensland, Yurika has installed regular charge locations for the state governments electric super highway. These are supplemented with manufacturer charge stations (mainly Tesla) and other networks. . All electric drive from Gold Coast to Toowoomba (fast charging), through Kingaroy up to Cania Gorge (overnight charging). And then up the coast fast charging from Rockhampton to Mackay and beyond. . Great to be out and about travelling again with Teresa and Peter. And great feeling that doing it without petrol is now possible, and cheaper, and more sustainable. . . . #electricsuperhighway #electricroadtrip #model3 #yurika #sustainableliving @ Queensland

19.01.2022 Nothing says Easter like a post about a bathroom renovation. Well - at least this year, when the staged construction of this home has the bath in just in time for isolating at home. Black and white: including fixtures, tiles walls and ceiling, floating over polished concrete floors. Joinery hiding in background built by Peters grandfather many years ago for his own barbershop. Light and colour provided by the recycled pendant light and window sashes. Recycled timber and gl...ass doors and highlights from an old office fit-out, with frosting for privacy. . Coloured highlights in the ceiling are off cut panels of polycarbonate as shaded skylights tucked under the solar PV panels on the roof for shade from hot summer sun. 10.01.2022 Article in the latest Sanctuary Magazine We were happy to help a Sunshine Coast couple at the start of their design and build process with a few ideas to help improve the comfort and sustainability of their design. Bit of a read to go with your morning coffee (or Friday afternoon beer).

10.01.2022 Kanye said design can save the world. (Along with a lot of perhaps crazy things we wont quote here.) An architects primary role is to help you imagine your life the way it might better be. Rather than drawing it for you, the way it already is. Our homes and offices have been asked to do so much more for us over the last few months. How have they helped us cope (or hindered our coping?) ... We work with clients on projects worth millions of dollars. But also enjoy staying involved in smaller projects, helping home owners understand what isnt working in their existing homes, and imagine how they might better live. If design is to help us, it will need to help us all, not just those with bigger budgets. . Dont be embarrassed to give an architect a call. Find one aligned with your priorities. They may be ready and willing to help. On tight budgets you might just ask for an analysis of your site. What works for you. What is not working and why? How could you live with aging parents if that becomes your reality. What if you ARE the aging parents and want to stay home and your kids wont leave. Why is it so hot / cold etc. How might we live more sustainably (and what does that mean, anyway?) Concept design might help you to imagine what you have not imagined. How might your life and needs evolve in the coming years? (Images are an example of a concept design evolving from an existing project home for staged renovations for clients). . . . #design #homedesign #goldcoastarchitecture #sustainabledesign #sustainableliving #masterplanning #conceptdesign #designsketch @ Gold Coast, Queensland

07.01.2022 Our clients for this house were starting a productive farm in Central Queensland. Our design showed them how they could live on a remote property where privacy from neighbours was not a serious concern. Where planning the house could allow room for family to grow, visitors to enjoy their company, parents to entertain and the kids to play outdoors. All while enjoying the rural views and breezes from every room. North facing, the design allows the house to make best use of t...he winter sun, while defining a large central space. The house is constructed with a high level of thermal mass to help anchor the house temperature through the seasons, and significant cross ventilation to allow cooling breezes in the afternoon. The north facing roofs then allow significant solar services including hot water and electricity. This large central covered courtyard shades large areas of the house, while allowing the entire family to come together through the day, well sheltered from sun and rain: facing the future swimming pool centred on the outlook over the rolling hillside. As background: The clients wanted a new family home to complete their move from suburbs, to a new lifestyle growing with kids, dogs, and future farm animals. The clients sketch as part of their brief is the last of the 4 images attached. They sketched the lifestyle they were leading in Brisbane as an example of what they wanted in central Queensland. This is only natural though they had lived in rural and regional areas previously, their most recent lifestyle had been suburban. They were happy in that at that time and knew that well. However, the house you build helps shape the lives you will lead: so the design process can help you imagine the life you could lead, rather than the one you currently do. Every client is different, and will aspire to different lifestyles. Every site is different. So home designs should also vary by site, by client, and by budget. During this surreal period of extended time at our homes how might you, or an architect, re-imagine your lives in your home? Or offices? . . . #homedesign #residentialdesign #queenslandarchitecture #goldcoastarchitecture
