25.01.2022 As weve noted before, we have a lot of very experienced people in our public affairs industry who just want to work. They are keen, able, interested and yes they are closer to retirement that the start of their career, yet we watch them being culled out of the process after the CVs hit the desk of the clients. This article is by a guy in the advertising area, but his gripes hold true for every industry: https://www.linkedin.com//im-54-22-32-years-experience-lo/... ...and dont forget, unless the under 40s start to change the culture now in time for their own (inevitable) advancing years, they, themselves will be striking this self-same attitude. What goes around....

25.01.2022 Is your blog lost in the noise? You bet! Apparently: "There are over 87 million blogs published on WordPress.com every month." according to this blog from Jeff Bullas written by Robin Geuens. (87 million...every month = 1.044 billion a year....or 20 million per week. Alternatively around 3 million EACH. DAY) ... Feeling swamped yet? http://www.jeffbullas.com/copywriting-tips/

24.01.2022 So you applied for the job... Did you get an interview? Are you ready for the interview?... Heres our tips for what to do if you DONT get an interview AND what to do if you DO get an interview. https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au/2018/02/01/interview/

22.01.2022 So you're a gun internal communications officer looking for a 12 month APS role? Look no further than our job listed at: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//1458-aps6-internal-/

22.01.2022 So youd like a challenging EL1 media role in Melbourne (or near enough)? This might just be the ticket! https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//1460-el1-asst-dir-m/

21.01.2022 Time for our next blog on preparing for the job you decided over the break that you wanted. In passing: We realise they are not your normal short blogs...they are detailed and long and go against the norm. Were taking a leaf out of Jeff Bullas advice book: Do the unexpected. They are long because there is a lot of information we want to convey quickly. ... We want to get the information out to anyone currently going through the process and who "just wants the information". So were not dragging it out and creating false build-ups of suspense. Its chunked in fairly hefty blogs. It gives you a good overview of whats needed for that stage without drowning you at the one time. Lets call them foundation blogs or evergreen blogs. Were into practical useful information. Not playing games - marketing or otherwise. If its useful, were happy. Later on, when other work is out of the way we can do some nice short 200 word blogs for you - unless you let us know you prefer meaty information like we do. (Personally I find the light fluffy articles just that. Its like having an entre when you want a meal.) Anyway...if you are into our type of career information (and dont mind the length of them), heres the next one: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au/2018/01/30/vanilla-cv/

21.01.2022 Mentoring. A big topic - always of interest. How do you find a mentor? ... Who should you approach...or do they approach you? Is there a protocol? Should you pay someone to mentor you...or not? Is "paying for lunch" with your mentor enough? (One recent article writer suggested it was an "insult" to pay a coffee for good advice, but in my view most mentors are happy to help give back and they dont want to be paid - and in some instances could not accept payment as they are in the APS and it is expected they will mentor others as part of the job.) There is also (now, apparently) the issue of men not wanting to / comfortable mentoring women - due to the potential for being subjected to harassment allegations. The article also has some suggestions on how to protect yourself if you are in that situation. Yes, theres a hashtag as well: #MentorHer. https://www.linkedin.com//men-afraid-mentor-women-heres-/

19.01.2022 Oh dear...we were just sent the following... You might laugh...or you might be offended...depending on which age group you are in. We thought the issue was/is going to be four (4) generations in the workplace, but we recently read an article which said it would be five (5) ..so you could imagine that these scenes would be repeated over and over in different forms. ... (We hope you see the humour in it.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo0KjdDJr1c

16.01.2022 If you think your CV might be letting you down when going for roles internally, with a recruitment agency or when you are sending it to a prospective employer... ...where would you go to find out whats wrong with it? ...and, importantly, how would you find out how to fix it?... Well, we might just have the answer for you: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//28/cv-letting-you-d/

15.01.2022 Are you looking for a 6 month APS6 role where youll be challenged with a range of work that is likely to change as priorities change and you like tackling whatever comes your way? Then Job#1465 might be for you: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//1462-65-el1-and-aps/

15.01.2022 So youre "social media savvy" and you just wish there was a role where you could be advising the CEO and Director Public Affairs about how to handle things using the SM channels you KNOW their stakeholders are using, but arent optimally set up. You like to analyse whats going on. Youve got a good gut feel for how things are transpiring when theres an issue/s on the run (but you also know that the top levels need to see the analytics, which of course youve got a handle ...on). Well, your lucky day has arrived. If youre a junior on the way up with loads of potential and want to work in a small team (just you the CEO and Director) to get them through an "issues rich" period, while learning from more experienced mentors, then this short term role (with potential to go longer), might interest you: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//1453-social-media-o/

14.01.2022 If internal communications if your "thing"...and youre an APS6 looking for a 12 month role in federal government... ...this might be right up your alley: https://www.publicaffairsjobs.com.au//1458-aps6-internal-/

14.01.2022 Thinking of faking information in your CV? 10.01.2022 So, you find out youre just "not the right fit" for the culture of the organisation that just interviewed you. Whose fault might that be? Is it really necessary to get all the way to an interview before the "cultural fit" issue comes up?... An article we read recently suggested that applicants are keen to select for themselves if the "cultural fit" is right for them before they even apply for a role. Perhaps organisations could assist potential applicants to self-delete from the process if they were more upfront (and clear) about what they want in a potential employee. In https://insidesmallbusiness.com.au//how-to-write-the-perfe, it says (and we quote): "... last years Job Seeker Report ...saw 40 per cent complain about the state of job advertisements, citing incomplete or unclear descriptions of the role. Job seekers want to know exactly what the job entails and what skills and qualifications the employer wants in order to better ascertain if they will be a good fit for the job. Of those who use company career pages, 84 per cent found them useful, however the majority of respondents wanted them to include more information. [And here is the relevant information for clients:] Specifically: *81 per cent wanted to know the precise skills and qualifications required for each position, *64 per cent wanted more information about the types of roles the company had, *58 per cent wanted to know more about the career paths on offer and *50 per cent wanted to know about the employee benefits. This indicates that job seekers want more information in order to strategise and educate themselves about what their target employers look for as well as ascertain if the employer is in fact a good fit for them and their desired career path." So, perhaps a better job advertisement is needed? When we ask clients to tell us "What do you really want to see in the perfect candidate?" it is usually vastly different to the Job Description provided. Maybe its time to just write from the heart about what the job entails (in real terms), what your organisation (practically) needs someone to do, have and be, and whats on offer to help them develop in the future. Food for thought.

03.01.2022 Finally!!!! A way for marketing (PR, public affairs etc) to sit at the main table with all the other areas of business.
