25.01.2022 When hundreds of people gathered in the Indian capital on Oct. 2 to decry the gang rape and murder of a young woman in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, many were reminded of the horrors of 2012when 23 year-old Jyoti Singh Pandey succumbed to a similar fate here. Her killing drew intense global attention, and she became known as Nirbhaya, meaning fearless. The latest case, in the city of Hathras, has caused similar outrage, prompting many Indians to wonder if anything h...as changed over the last eight years. Despite recent reforms aimed at better protecting women from violent sex crimes, observers say the mishandling of the Hathras victim’s case reveals a systemic failure to implement those new laws. It feels as though we have learned absolutely nothing, said Gayatri Suri, a college student protesting with her sister. This is a fight that will go on for years. https://slate.com/news-and-p//india-dalit-rape-murder.html

23.01.2022 The New Normal Is a Myth. The Future Won’t Be Normal at All, but the election is your chance to spin this ‘new’ normal in one of two radically different directions. Looks like we’ve got to find a way to live safely with the virus .. Then there’s climate.

23.01.2022 TRUMP’S POLITICIZATION OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN ! During his one term in power, instead of delivering on his promise to drain the swamp, Trump repeatedly and publicly called for the Justice Department and the FBI to investigate his perceived enemies and in doing so, he crossed a longstanding and democratically vital line against politicizing a nation's law enforcement agencies. Troublingly, it appears that the Justice Department repeatedly allowe...d itself to be pressured by Trump’s demands, and this breaking with norms and malpractice was accelerated blatantly under Barr. This distortion of the justice departments role should never be possible. The arms of government should remain independent, as was intended, for the free and fair functioning of a democratic society. Recent revelations that during this period Trump demanded access to opponents phone records shows the level of corruption of the system he normalised. Can the DOJ expunge this awful chapter in its history and gird itself permanently from such corrupt abuses of power into the future? See more

19.01.2022 Message from Kerry O'Brien - prominent Australian former ABC journalist. "The Morrison Government should use its close friendship with the US to push hard for the extradition proceeding to be dropped against Julian #Assange. NY Times published the revelations with impunity. This govt should demand the same treatment for one of our own journalists."https://twitter.com/KerryOBrien/status/1311620069147910147

19.01.2022 Let me be as clear as possible. In the next few hours and days there is going to be a massive disinformation campaign around Hathras. The political stakes are v...ery high. This is being orchestrated even as I write this. The effort will be to produce four perception effects that are as follows: 1. There was no rape 2. There is no ‘caste’ angle to the atrocity. 3. The four men who are accused are innocent, even though no legal process has deemed them either guilty or acquitted them yet. 4. That the victim died because of injuries sustained when her own brother and mother attacked her. There is going to be some difficulty in dealing with the fact of the hurried and surreptitious attempt at burning the victim’s body (it’s an insult to call it a ‘cremation’) but blame for that will be shifted on to ‘local police officials’, who are, in any case, disposable pawns in this game. I know that this sounds unspeakably bizarre. But I have watched this pot boil over the past few hours in the underbelly of the right-wing social media ecosystem. And I know now that what was just simmering under the surface is going to soon break out into the open, and with great force. It will happen simultaneously, on more than one front. Some of the voices will be breathtakingly crude, and will throw you off kilter with how barbaric they are, while others will appear polished and civilised. Everybody. Please be prepared. PS: I forgot to add explicitly what is implicit - that there will be a determined effort to show that the protests against the Hathras atrocity are a result of a conspiracy. ~Shuddhabrata Sengupta https://www.indiatimes.com//upper-caste-men-meet-outside-e

15.01.2022 Sustainable living we’ve all heard the term, but what does it actually mean? Sustainability has become a bit of a buzzword and hearing it so often makes it easy for people to forget what is actually behind it. In real terms, sustainability means living a good life within our means, in a way that doesn’t prevent future generations from being able to enjoy a similarly pleasant life and that means thinking about how what we do now impacts on the long term availability of the...Continue reading

14.01.2022 How did the Taliban end up calling the shots after decades of war and countless deaths? It seems ever more certain that these fanatics will end up back in power. Pity the women of Afghanistan.

13.01.2022 No one is left in Mi Meh’s village. After the military began launching indiscriminate air attacks and shelling on her township of Demoso in Myanmar’s southeastern Kayah State, also known as Karenni, everyone fled to the jungle. With only the clothes on her back and a small tarpaulin for ground cover, Mi Meh and the others from her village set up camp. When Al Jazeera spoke to her on May 27, she was running out of food and water, her clothes were drenched by heavy rains and sh...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Border officials in the UAE are seizing more exotic animals in their battle against traffickers using Dubai as a transit point, a new report suggests. A detailed review focusing on air transport found the UAE had the third-highest number of smuggling cases worldwide between 2009 and last year. This included seizures of animals and animal products at Dubai airports, or at hauls further down the line, mainly in Asia. Some of those overseas hauls were the result of international...Continue reading

10.01.2022 The US could have left all on its own without also agreeing to the release of Taliban prisoners and without easing sanctions. Why agree to these concessions in exchange for unenforceable promises from an untrustworthy enemy? How long before they’re back in control?

07.01.2022 In 1938, L.A. Kindergarten teacher Helen Hulick went to jail for wearing pants in a courtroom. On Nov. 9, 1938, Hulick, 28, wore slacks during a court appearanc...e to testify against two men -- and her testimony was rescheduled and Hullick was ordered by Judge Arthur S. Guerin to return to the court in a dress. Hulick was quoted in the, Los Angeles Times saying, You tell the judge I will stand on my rights. If he orders me to change into a dress I won’t do it. I like slacks. They’re comfortable. Thank you Helen for fighting to make pants an acceptable form of dress for women, I’m thanking you right now by lunging away in the sweet comfort of my yoga pants. 07.01.2022 You’re angry about a mask mandate? Ha! North Korea is taking increasingly harsh measures to stop the coronavirus from entering the country, including executing an official in August who violated anti-virus rules, South Korean intelligence officials told lawmakers on Friday. In a closed-door briefing to a parliamentary intelligence committee on Friday, the officials told lawmakers that the executed North Korean had brought goods through customs in the city of Sinuiju on North ...Korea's border with China, in violation of coronavirus-related quarantine measures. North Korea also has locked down the capital, Pyongyang, and prohibited fishing and salt production in the ocean as part of its restrictions to block COVID-19, lawmakers cited the intelligence officials as saying. Lawmaker Ha Tae-keung, who is on the intelligence committee, told reporters after the briefing that North Korea has refused to take delivery of 110,000 tons of rice promised by China. The rice is sitting in northeastern China's port of Dalian, he said, because North Korea fears the coronavirus could enter the country with the shipment. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "has been expressing emotional excess, anger and signs of stress, and increasingly giving unreasonable orders," Ha told reporters. Most of North Korea's trade both legal commerce and extensive smuggling goes through China, and the border closure after the coronavirus broke out has sent food and commodities prices surging in sanctions-hit North Korea, according to news reports. Trade with China plummeted 73% from January to September, year-on-year, according to a report by the Korea International Trade Association. By contrast, trade dropped 57% following the latest batch of international sanctions, imposed in 2017. North Korea claims to have been successful in keeping the coronavirus out of the country. Despite testing thousands of suspected cases, it claims not to have a single confirmed case, although health experts say smugglers could have brought the virus in from China. Lawmaker Ha added that South Korea's intelligence service foiled an attempt by the North to hack into a South Korean drugmaker working on a coronavirus vaccine. Observers are now waiting to see whether the struggle against COVID-19 will force the cancellation of a national congress of the ruling Workers' Party in January, at which Kim Jong Un is expected to unveil a raft of new domestic and foreign policies. In a sign that Kim is keeping his options open with the incoming Biden administration, intelligence officials told lawmakers Friday that Pyongyang has instructed diplomats not to antagonize the United States, and that ambassadors will be held responsible for any missteps. "We've been told that there have been orders to exercise utmost prudence in language," lawmaker Kim Byung-kee told reporters. https://www.npr.org//north-korea-executed-coronavirus-rule

04.01.2022 A top Iranian scientist believed to be responsible for developing the country's military nuclear program was killed Friday, causing outrage in Iran and raising U.S. concerns over potential retaliation. "In the shootout between Fakhrizadeh's bodyguards and the terrorists, the scientist was seriously wounded and taken to hospital," where the medical t...Continue reading

Half a million people signed Rudd's record-breaking petition, and this week, and the crossbench and Labor worked with the G...reens to get this crucial Senate inquiry off the ground. The media landscape in Australia has been changing rapidly. We need to ensure we have a strong and independent public interest news industry to support our democracy.

03.01.2022 It’s been quite a relief to have several days without Trump tweets dominating the airwaves. However he is still President yet appears to have publicly disengaged from the battle against the coronavirus at a moment when the disease is tearing across the US at an alarming pace. Trump’s silence on the disastrous spike in cases, as well as his refusal to begin co-ordination on virus issues with Biden’s transition team is a further failure of leadership and compassion.

03.01.2022 Dear presidents of the nine Amazonian countries and to all world leaders that share responsibility for the plundering of our rainforest, My name is Nemonte Nenquimo. I am a Waorani woman, a mother, and a leader of my people. The Amazon rainforest is my home. I am writing you this letter because the fires are raging still. Because the corporations are spilling oil in our rivers. Because the miners are stealing gold (as they have been for 500 years), and leaving behind open pit...s and toxins. Because the land grabbers are cutting down primary forest so that the cattle can graze, plantations can be grown and the white man can eat. Because our elders are dying from coronavirus, while you are planning your next moves to cut up our lands to stimulate an economy that has never benefited us. Because, as Indigenous peoples, we are fighting to protect what we love our way of life, our rivers, the animals, our forests, life on Earth and it’s time that you listened to us. https://www.theguardian.com//western-worldyour-civilisatio
