21.01.2022 #MemoryLaneMonday is a rewind to 1982 when Mini Minors and Holdens shared the road with W-class and Z-class trams at the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders streets. New concrete frames were constructed that year for the tram terminus on Elizabeth Street. The terminus is still there, the concrete framework has long gone. During the normal morning peak hour the intersection where trams terminate at the entrance to Flinders St Station can be crossed by up to 10,000 people. The busy intersection will undergo a major revamp this month, with Elizabeth Street turned into a pedestrian and tram zone (from Flinders Lane to Flinders Street). When travelling on trains, trams and buses please #StaySafe and keep your distance from other passengers with these simple tips: - Avoid busy services by travelling outside peak times (7am to 9am and 4.30pm to 6.30pm) - Wait for passengers to get off before boarding - When raining, take an umbrella to avoid shelters... - When using escalators, stand four steps away from the person in front and avoid walking up or down - Consider hopping off a few stops early and walking Remember #facemasks are still mandatory for all Victorians. 05.01.2022 #MemoryLaneMonday is a look back at Bourke Street in 1934 looking up the hill towards Spring Street and Parliament. Melbourne’s tram system was then a cable car public transport system operating until 1940. The last Melbourne cable tram ran on 26 October 1940, on the Northcote to Bourke Street route. 1934 was the Melbourne Centenary marking 100 years since John Batman’s pronouncement of the area as ‘the place for a village’. 02.01.2022 #MemoryLaneMonday back to the 1960s at Flemington, with these stylish ladies arriving at the track for the Melbourne Cup. The Cup is going to look a lot different this year, with no crowds allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Flemington Station was constructed in 1886. The current station building with a covered roof was provided in 1944, and at the same time, the stairs were replaced by asphalted ramps, making it much more accessible to Flemington Racecourse.
