22.01.2022 I had a scare over the last few days. Just when I'm up to my neck in doing 10 hour days for the ABS Census and trying to fit in my bookkeeping business also, Angus's appetite goes off. This is always the first thing that alerts me to something being wrong with goats and sheep - it's such a good indicator. I paid more attention to him and noticed that his stream of pee was a lot narrower than just after he'd had his operation a month or so ago that turned him from a boy int...o a girl so he pee's out the back. He was also crunching up his stomach as if something was blocked. I wasted no time, I researched on the web and because his last stone ended in 2 major operations, a visit to a vet 150kms away, and another 300kms away and cost me $3200 - I was going to act quick. I had kept the previous stone and found that it melted in lemon juice, so I knew the remedy would involve lemon juice, but I also added apple cider vinegar, cranberries for bladder health, cayenne pepper as a relaxant, berries as antioxidants, onions, garlic... I've always struggled restraining Angus because of his horns (now "horn") and his strength, but I'm getting better at this. I tied him by his angle to the post, then roped him around the neck and kept going around in circles with the rope tying his head closely to the pole. This worked a treat and I was able to administer a large glass of the concoction twice a day for 2 days. I was so pleased this morning to see a good stream of pee coming from him and no straining. He's also got his appetite back - a sure sign he is back to good health. I love natural remedies - they are great and if I catch the animal early I can save so much in vet bills. Now I'm going to find a spare few days to use the remedy on me, I was told I still have kidney stones in my kidneys and I can feel something there - a dull ache. This remedy doesn't work for all stones - perhaps 80% - but not bad - better than severe pain and lots of visits to emergency departments! See more

16.01.2022 We had a fabulous weekender at Pucker Farm Animal Sanctuary. Archie and Luca named the 2 new Dexters Coconut and Bananas - very fitting names for cows! The weather was good to us miraculously. Everyone helped out so much that I wanted to imprison them all here and not let them leave. The boys and Jessica helped me feed all the animals which was great. A love affair was struck up between nino and cherpy - so much so I thought I would have to frisk him on him leaving to ensure ...he wasn't smuggling out any feathery creatures. We had a big bonfire under a star light sky whilst Sarah shovelled hot coals under our chairs to keep us warm on a very cold night. Thank you guys for making the weekend such a success and it was great to catch up. I will post photos when I get them from Leon. By the way let the Dexters out of their field and they spent the next few hours exploring the property - they had the time of their lives - coco doing a little jump and they followed me back home to their field again - it was magical! 16.01.2022 I've just nominated Lyn White - founder of Animals Australia to become Australian of the Year. She is such a deserving person, but not only that - if she won - it would be an amazing achievement in increasing the profile of the work that Animals Australia do and bringing to the attention of the public the cruelty that is currently rife through out the intensive farming industry and other industries involving animals in Australia. It's only taken me about 20 mins to nominate... her - I would love others to nominate Lyn as well - I think it would make such a big difference to the welfare of animals in Australia if she won. The thing with many animals involved in big industry in Australia - their welfare is getting worse not better as we supposedly becoming more civilised - this is because more pressure is put on producers or people in these industries to cut costs (which is of course what is happening in all of these industries where big companies are involved). Here is the website: http://www.australianoftheyear.org.au/nominate/form/thanks/

16.01.2022 My broken finger is not yet healed, and I looked in the mirror last night to see a nice shiner developing (the goat kicked his head back and his horn hit my eyebrow - I was left dizzy for 30 seconds), and my foot was hurting, and yesterday Angus stood on my foot and reminded me why it had been hurting - he stood on it the day before (a double-whammy!). So today against the odds - I've done my morning chores along with a metal stick I'm using as a walking stick, but I'm now r...elegated to the lounge today despite it being a gorgeous day out there and wanting to continue my good work of yesterday in raking & picking up stones/sticks in preparation for moving the grass once I get the spare parts from the PO (my mower of 2 months has already broken but I have put it through it's paces - it's a big area that needs mowing). It's an important job to get done as once the grass is too long I can't get the mower thru it, it also looks great once done, but more importantly I had 2 sheep indoors for 3 whole days last year whilst I took it in turns in having them on the sofa plucking darts out of their skin which had burrowed in there thru their coats - this barley grass that grows round the farmhouse is a killer (quite literally)! So it's computer work for me today & hoping I'm back on my feet tomorrow - as their's work to be done on their eer farm! See more

15.01.2022 I couldn't find Angus last night and assumed he was with the sheep, but this morning when I checked, he wasn't with them. I was concerned so I did a search and found him stuck in the hen house - he couldn't get out so I had to pull him out by his legs. Hopefully he won't be doing that again!

11.01.2022 Does anyone have or know of anyone who has a caravan that they would be happy to donate to "Pucker Farm Animal Sanctuary". I've been investigating purchasing one, but the very cheapest are around $1,000. I could juggle money and put stuff on credit cards, but an idea sprung to mind that someone might be able to donate one as there are many old dilapidated caravans sitting idle on people's properties and this would go to a very good cause - I want to either rent out the house for Farmstays and I can live in the caravan and/or put up volunteers in the caravan. All proceeds of course going directly to the upkeep of the animals on Pucker Farm Animal Sanctuary. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you know. Many thanks.

11.01.2022 Didn't get up particularly early this morning - 7am. Cherpy has stopped squawking at me first thing in the morning for food and just taken to sitting quietly on the edge of the bed waiting - vast improvement. The sun was bursting through the windows so the lounge was awash with sunlight - always a good reason to jump out of bed and get moving. Checked on the sheep up the top of the yard - Georgie is very busy with his girls - but I noticed Munchy the goat was having difficult...y walking and was near the house - I'd spotted his difficulty walking over the last few days and knew I had to clip his hooves - but I'd sort of been putting it off because of the last fiasco - it's difficult doing these sorts of jobs on your own and I've been hit twice really badly by his horns in the head. This time however I decided to restrain him the same way I had with Angus thru his illness - wrap his head tightly to a pole so that he can't move. This worked a treat and I was able to quickly do a thorough job on his hooves. He's still a bit cautious walking, but it must feel like taking off a pair of stilettos and walking bare footed for him. So now it's 8.15am - all the animals are fed and attended to and I can now have my own breakfast in the knowledge that I've done a good early morning's worth of work! See more

10.01.2022 Dead goat? No just completely crashed out!

10.01.2022 Cherpy my house chicken was a girl, then my friend's mum who is the bird woman of Perth said Cherpy was a boy, and now well what can I say other than this strange looking object appeared on my carpet this morning!

08.01.2022 Angus is now back to full health - how do I know? He's jumping up on things he shouldn't be on, he's sparring with Munch the other goat, he's stealing the chicken food, he's running around and jumping scaring the sheep and he's getting antsy with me. Welcome back naughty Angus - happy to have you back even if you are a pain in the proverbial!

07.01.2022 When I had Pucky my first sheep - I was travelling with him in the car and pulled it to a paint shop to buy some paint. I left the window open so he could get some air. I was chatting to the assistant in the shop when her jaw dropped. Standing at the doorway was this big sheep, barring his head off. I don't think they'll ever have an experience again like that in that paint shop - needless to say the cameras came out. Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of him on that occasion, but here's another one of my beautiful boy who got me started on how amazing sheep are!

03.01.2022 On the subject of Cherpy - he - I mean she, sleeps on the back of my office chair at night once I've gone to bed (up to that point she will often jump up onto my legs which I rest on the office desk whilst I'm on the computer. She can get a bit cantankerous as I'm typing and start attacking my hands - she doesn't like my hands moving because it's my hands that used to give her medicine & she's got a long memory. If I don't get out of bed early enough, she comes into the bedroom and starts squawking at me until I get up and feed her. Well this morning she wasn't happy to just squawk from the floor, she jumped up onto the bed, then onto my back and squawked in my ear - obviously she was particularly hungry this morning or maybe I was particularly late getting up - in any case - who needs an alarm clock when you live on a farm!

01.01.2022 Transformed the back bedroom today just with a lick of paint - amazing. It looks like a lovely room now instead of this awful place good only for storage. I’ve pulled down the virtual blinds, fake gold plastic curtain rails, covered up the blue rag rolled effect (yuk - these people had no taste), and matched the paint to the carpet. The windows now are exposed and open up the room. I’ll get decent rails and put up curtains, but keep them low profile instead of strangling... the room with the window dressings which is what was happening before. The windows can bring the garden into the bedroom instead. I’ve set up a bed, table & lamp in there with a few nice pictures on the wall. I still can’t quite believe how different it looks - I’d written off that room, but now it’s one of the best rooms in the house, next to the verandah which is awash with sunlight as the sun sets in the evening time. A perfect spot for guests/volunteers to stay & enjoy a bit of farm life. See more
