10.01.2022 There is a common myth, an old wives tale, that continues to peak it’s head into conversations. That myth is that resistance training will stunt children’s growth. There is smidgen of truth to this old wives tale, weightlifting can lead to stunted growth but this is due to lifting too much weight with too little technique with very, very poor programming and little to no supervision! Like anything, if you do something wrong there will be adverse-affects. Lifting too much we...ight with poor technique and no safety controls can lead to injuries to the bone’s growth plates therefore stunting growth. Most of these injuries actually occur when children are left to their own devices, messing around in the gym or occur when ego-lifting. However the truth of the matter is, if children undergo supervised resistance training under a trained professional the opposite occurs! With proper programming and periodisation, resistance training strengthens children’s bones and muscles, reduces the likelihood of injury, helps maintain a healthy weight and ion levels and increases self-esteem and confidence just to name a few. There are so many benefits to supervised resistance training and to me, it is a no brainer for child development. For those parents who are still sceptical about their kids lifting weights, I leave you with this question to ponder over how heavy is a school bag? (Pohanka, 2020)
