18.01.2022 Hello Everyone, After closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19 over the last 2 weeks, and having spoken to family, friends, and other members of the dance community, I must regretfully announce that I am cancelling tomorrow's Pura Salsa social. I am also suspending all Pura Salsa socials until further notice. This is my own decision, made based on careful consideration of the best information available from the WHO, as well as my analysis, of the most up-to-date, and a...ccurate raw data available. My decision is not an attempt to cast judgement on anybody else in the dance scene, or the wider community. For me personally, I run dance events because I'm passionate about dance, and because I believe in the positive benefits dance has on people's lives and the wider community. I do not do any of this for the money. Pura Salsa events are not run for a profit, and most of the time just break even. I am fortunate enough to have a day job that allows me to work from home, so my income likely won't be affected over the coming weeks and months. There are other people in the dance industry, and the wider community, who do not have this luxury. For some people dancing is their sole source of income. Everybody has to consider their own individual situation for themselves, including family, friends, finances, and health of the wider community, and many dancers, promoters, teachers, who rely on dancing for their income are now under a lot of pressure, and will have to make some difficult decisions. Let's support these people, and our community as best we can. A big, heartfelt thank you to EVERYONE...dancers, DJs for your continued support of Pura Salsa events. We will get through this as a community, and we will all be dancing again together very soon. Stay calm, be patient, take care of yourselves and each other. 17.01.2022 Hello Everyone, In light of the current COVID19 situation, so far I have been really encouraged by the response by the majority of people across the dance scene, in Brisbane and Australia. I'd like to acknowledge that this is a really tough time for a lot of people. It's tough for people who make their living through dance. It's tough for people who work in the health care industry. It's tough for people who have family and friends who are vulnerable to illness and are in ...higher risk health care categories. It's tough for everyone as we try to figure out how to best respond. Now is not a time to panic. Now is not a time to judge and condemn others. Now is not a time for snarky posts and comments, and crass hashtags. Now is not a time to spread information from sources with little expertise in health / medical matters. Now is not a time for inappropriate memes. Now is not a time for opinion pieces. Now is not a time for conspiracy theories. Now is not a time for blame or shame. Now is a time for compassion and caring for others. Now is a time to think outside the box, to see how he can continue to keep going as a community. Now is a time to think about what actions you can take to help others. Now is a time to reach out and ask "How are you going? Do you need anything? What can I do to help?" Everybody's situation is different. 16.01.2022 ¡Hola Salseros! We are still not able to host social dance parties, but things are slowly improving. So for now, Pura Salsa is doing SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT.... You might not know this about me, but a long time before I ever starting dancing, I was singing and playing guitar, basically since I was a kid. I feel like I often hear people say things like, when they hear salsa they: "Don't really HEAR the RHYTHM" OR "Don't really FEEL the MUSIC" OR "Only really hear a lot of banging on pots and pans" :-p If you feel like you can relate to this a little bit ... THEN THIS IS FOR YOU! For the first time ever, Pura Salsa will being host the PURA SALSA MUSIC WORKSHOP We are going to dive head first into the beautiful wide world of salsa MUSIC, with an emphasis for DANCERS. This is not about "musicality". We are going to something a little bit different to what some of you might have been exposed to before. We are going to get into some SINGING, DANCING, GUITAR, VINYL RECORDS, HARMONY, MELODY, RHYTHM and a ton of other MUSIC concepts. We will get into some MUSIC THEORY in a fun way. This is all about CHANGING how you LISTEN TO and EXPERIENCE MUSIC, with an emphasis on CHANGING THE WAY YOU DANCE. 13.01.2022 ¡Hola Salseros! The next Salsa 'n' Chill session is this Saturday, and, in light of current public health concerns, it's a time for a Public Service Announcement. Dancing is a fun and very safe activity, and at Pura Salsa events, we are committed to creating a safe space for everyone to enjoy and be able to express themselves.... That being said, it's a good time for a reminder about basic health and hygiene for dancers. The best things you can do protect your own health, and the health of other dancers, and the wider community are to: 1.) Wash your hands with soap and water before, during and after dance events, using the bathroom, handling food etc. A good rule of thumb is 20 seconds (or the amount of time it takes to sing happy birthday twice). 2.) If you are feeling unwell, consider giving dancing a miss and staying at home until you feel better. There will always be another social dancing event next week. We encourage people to bring your own water bottles if you can. We will still provide free, ice cold water and disposable cups, as usual. However, please take care to write your name on your cup with the marker pens provided, and take care not to share cups. Unfortunately, we wont be providing finger food/nibbles in the short term, since this is a potential hygiene issue. Stay safe. Take care of yourselves, and each other. Paul Ski / Pura Salsa Crew
