25.01.2022 Today is #SUDEPActionDay, a time to shine a light on Sudden Unexpected Death In Epilepsy. Its so difficult to talk about, but the conversation is important so that we can work towards prevention.

25.01.2022 MY EPILEPSY STORY A Southern River roof plumber has overcome major challenges with epilepsy to help others with the common neurological cond...ition. 34 year-old Warrick had apparently been experiencing focal seizures with impaired awareness since the age of 18 but was only diagnosed with Temporal Lobe epilepsy last year. Warrick, who recently became a father, has overcome discrimination and loss of his roof plumbing business and clients since his epilepsy diagnosis to start a new FIFO job in the Pilbara. Over many difficult years Warricks family spent money and time trying to seek medical help for Warrick who would wake up and find himself in places without being able to explain how he got there. Since he suffered a focal seizure with impaired awareness in a hardware store Warrick also now wears a MedicAlert bracelet and carries medical information cards in his wallet for explanation. Despite his difficulties, Warrick recently accomplished his lifelong dream of trekking the Inca Trail. He wants to encourage people living with epilepsy to never give up on their dreams. He believes that with the right support network, being upfront and honest about your condition, there is absolutely nothing that people living with epilepsy cant accomplish, it makes life more challenging but all the more sweeter once youre there. Dont let Epilepsy stop you from chasing your dreams he says. He says the direct support and information he has received from Epilepsy WA has been critical to his wellbeing. Warrick regularly uses the online support provided by Epilepsy WA via its Facebook community page to reduce his feelings of isolation and to be able to engage with others living with epilepsy who understand & experience similar issues. Warricks family and friends will fundraise to help Epilepsy WA support services via their Team Purple Rain for the annual Purple Walk 4 Epilepsy WA. #GoPurpleForEpilepsy #PurpleMonth2020 #MyEpilepsyStory

24.01.2022 Our annual report is hot off the press. 24.01.2022 http://www.epilepsyaustralia.net/epilepsy-and-risk/ Let's face it, life is always a bit risky. However, for those who live with seizures, we know that the idea of risk quickly gets notched up a peg or two. This is partly because seizures are unpredictable and can make people very risk adverse, cautious or timid. The risk of accidents and other unwanted outcomes from seizures such as having a seizure in front of work colleagues, having a seizure on public transport or at a special event, can be a source of fear for many people. With this in mind, being aware of the risks and taking reasonable steps to manage them, people with epilepsy need not cut themselves off from the kinds of fulfilling lives they should be living. Many people with epilepsy lead full and active lives.

23.01.2022 It's (finally!) starting to warm up, so here are some ways to help handle your epilepsy as summer hits.

23.01.2022 Morgan's story When Morgan Smith, 20, was about to get into their family pool for a swim she had a seizure. Luckily for Smith, her 7-year-old brother, Aiden M...cCullough, was nearby. McCullough quickly sprung into action, and he said that his instincts kicked in as he grabbed Smith by her hair and held her above the water while he screamed until help came. This is a timely reminder about water safety for people living with epilepsy and the importance of seizure first aid. For more information visit: http://bit.ly/EQWaterSafety or watch the story of this little superhero .

17.01.2022 EPILEPSY TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HALLOWEEN, from Epilepsy WA and Epilepsy Foundation. Make sure your child doesnt forget medications that evening. Watch out for strobe lights if thats a trigger for your child. Make sure your child either has a teenage buddy with them or you go with them if a child has a seizure around other children trick-or-treating, they might be ignored with all the chaos and noise of the evening.... Dont stay out significantly later than your childs bedtime. Make sure your teenager has a cell phone with them and someone is home to pick them up if they are trick-or-treating a distance that would be prohibitive to walk back. If your child is on the ketogenic or Atkins diet, its ok to get candy and dress up, but NOT to eat the candy without explicit permission. Make sure your child or teen wears their medical alert bracelet while trick-or-treating if they have one. Make sure your child is accompanied by someone who knows about your childs seizures and what to do in case of a seizure emergency. See more

06.01.2022 Perth Wildcats Bryce Cotton’s epilepsy story Diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy, doctors told his mum Yvonne that he wouldn’t live to see his 11th birthda...y. Yet somehow medicine prevailed, Cotton survived and developed into a basketball superstar. The thing that was difficult for me was for a couple of hours before the seizures would happen, I would start to feel off. I would know ahead of time that something was going to happen. For the first year after I started getting epilepsy, they didn’t know what it was. But by the time I hit seventh grade, they found medication and I took it for a year. Then they weaned me off it and everything has been good since. Being blessed to overcome something like that keeps me motivated, because I am so happy to be alive and doing what I love to do. Now 28 Cotton has played in the NBA, won three NBL championships and been named the leagues’s MVP twice. 01.01.2022 Today is #SUDEPActionDay, a time to shine a light on Sudden Unexpected Death In Epilepsy. It's so difficult to talk about, but the conversation is important so that we can work towards prevention.

01.01.2022 UPDATE - AEDs MEDICINES SUPPLY We would like to reassure our community that may have concerns about the supply of Anti-Epileptic Drugs (AEDs) being interrupt...ed as people prepare for the impact of coronavirus or COVID-19. The Government has announced that it now requires community pharmacists to enforce new limits on dispensing and sales of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia and the Pharmaceutical Society, in conjunction with the Department of Health, have now issued new advice to pharmacies. This is also supported by the National Pharmaceutical Services Association, which represents pharmaceutical wholesalers. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has directed pharmacists to limit the dispensing of prescriptions to one months supply, which should also assist in alleviating stock issues and ensure fairness for patients https://www.guild.org.au//dispensing-limits-will-ensure-fa These sensible and timely limits announced by the Government will apply to particular classes of medicines which must remain available for patients in need. It is regrettable that such measures are needed, but these are unprecedented and drastic times. We ask all patients to understand the need for these restrictions and to be respectful towards pharmacy staff, said National President, George Tambassis. A statement from Epilepsy Australia announced Medicines Australia and the Therapeutic Goods Administration have both confirmed there is CURRENTLY NO ISSUE with the supply of AEDs in Australia. Pharmaceutical companies, including UCB, who manufacture and distribute AEDs, have also advised they do not see COVID-19 impacting on the supply of their products to customers. See here for UCBs statement: https://www.ucb.com/stories-media/ In the case of isolated shortages, Epilepsy Australia suggest you speak to your pharmacist about having stock shipped directly to your pharmacy from manufacturers. If you have any concerns please send us a message or contact us on 1300 852 853.
