23.01.2022 KNITTERS & CROCHETERS Purple For Prostate launches their Caring Squares Project! Purple For Prostate, with the support of the Westbury RSL, has launched a project to make handmade blankets for those less fortunate this winter. WE NEED HELP WHILST YOU ARE HOME KEEPING SAFE AND WELL! We need help with knitting and crocheting. We need your unwanted balls of 8ply acrylic wool in any colour. We need you now! ... Our plan is to make up blankets using 30 knitted or crocheted squares or a combination of both. The squares must be 21cm by 21 cm square. Ideally the knitted squares will be made using the miracle square design. We suggest a 4 or 4.5 knitting needle and 4-5 crochet hook sizes. Any colour combination will be perfect as we will be making blankets for males and females. One square or 10 squares - every square counts. But please sew in your tails. This will help us when it is time to sew them all up. Thank you for this! If you have all you need to make squares, please let us know you are out there by replying on Facebook or emailing us at [email protected] so we know to expect your squares at some time. Completed squares can be dropped anytime to Jo’s place at 87 Dexter Street Westbury. Please place them in a waterproof bag and leave on a chair on the front veranda. If you have wool to donate, please leave on Jo’s veranda too. Just drop and go all good! We can also arrange safe socially-distanced pick up if required. If you need wool, knitting needles or a crochet hook, a 21cm x 21cm template, please let us know and we will do our best to get these for you. Whilst this will be an ongoing project, we are hoping to have at least 300 squares made by the 10th of June so we can sew up our first 10 blankets for local support services as soon as possible. From our Purple Hearts to yours, thank you for supporting Purple For Prostate as we do our best to support those in need in Northern Tasmania.

21.01.2022 Thank you so much to our generous supporters. 32 bags of food, linen, pjs, slippers, toiletries and your beautiful handmade blankets on their way to support Magnolia Place
20.01.2022 Hey guys, this is the 'recipe' for knitting the squares for our blankets. It depends on the wool. You don't knit it as a square. You start with 3 stitches then increase (knit 1,knit into the front and back of next stitch) at the beginning of every row until side edge measures 21cm then you decrease (knit 1, slip 1, knit 1 then pass slip stitch over) at the beginning of every row until there are 3 stitches then cast off. Doing a square this way doesn't go out of shape. It is actually a diamond.

12.01.2022 Purple For Prostate (P4P) Purple For Prostate is a small group of ladies in Westbury trying their hardest to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Health in Northern Tasmania. P4P is a Westbury RSL Sub Branch health and well-being program. The P4P team have donated an amazing $26,000 to the Cancer Council of Tasmania since February 2018. These funds are used specifically to provide financial support for PSMA PET scans for prostate cancer patients who are unable to fund thi...s critical next step in their cancer treatment. PSMA PET scanning greatly assists in localising the extent of prostate cancer. It can do this not only in the area of the prostate but also in the lymph glands and bones. As a result, therapy can be targeted more appropriately. PSMA PET scans are not Government funded. Locally in Westbury, the P4P prostate health awareness campaign has included public forums, presentations to service groups, distribution of Cancer Council printed material and counsellor training sessions. They have also made and delivered pamper packs to carers of prostate cancer patients. If you would like to know more about Purple For Prostate, please email [email protected]. Prostate health - let's talk about it!

Who would have believed our initial car load to Deloraine House in May would lead to this amazing support for the Launceston Women's Shelter.
