12.01.2022 Resume Tip - Career Timelines Usually, your career history is addressed in reverse chronological order. This means that you start with your most recent role and work your way back. 10 - 15 years of your career timeline is the general guideline. However, there are exceptions to this! If you have been studying and your placements or internships are more relevant to your future role than your previous jobs are, make sure that these experiences are highlighted on your resume ...first. Another exception is if you are hoping to return to a particular industry after having worked in a different area for a while. In this case, you may choose to list your more relevant experience first. Feel free to get in touch if you have any specific questions about this! See my next post for advice about addressing career gaps.

07.01.2022 Let’s Chat! When I was on maternity leave with our second kiddo, Jack, I wanted to start a business to keep my brain busy, lessen the impact that working part-time would have on us as a family, and where I could provide a service to assist others. In the end, I landed on resume writing and I haven’t looked back since.... Helping others is what I set out to. When I say that I’m happy to chat and give advice, I’m not doing it to push a sale; I’m doing it because I genuinely enjoy it. Sure, it also helps to build trust in my business but I’m not interested in pressuring people to part with their hard-earned cash. So, when you see a post that says that I am happy to look over your resume and give some pointers or provide you with some guidance for writing your own resume, cover letter or selection criteria, I absolutely mean it. Free of charge, always.

02.01.2022 Professional Development I love learning new things! On the home front, I'm teaching myself embroidery (thanks, YouTube!).... At school, we're undertaking some incredibly interesting learning about Mathematical Mindsets and how to apply this knowledge in the classroom. And, in my business, I am constantly engaging in training to improve the resume and selection criteria services that I provide. What have you been learning about lately?

02.01.2022 Addressing Career Gaps Kids. Travel. Study. Health. There are plenty of good reasons why someone might have a gap in their career history.... Whatever the reason, it is important to address this on your resume and in your cover letter. Some Application Tracking Systems (ATS) are set up to look for gaps and/or it might leave a potential employer to make assumptions about why you were out of work for that time. Exactly how you go about addressing it will depend on the details of the situation. One way to address a gap is to list it as your most recent role and give a brief description of some of the skills you have gained in that time. If you'd like any further guidance around this, feel free to get in touch!

01.01.2022 Key Selection Criteria Key Selection Criteria (KSC) are a series of statements that need to be addressed to demonstrate that you have the skills, knowledge, attitudes, qualifications, and experience to successfully fulfill an advertised role. While they can be overwhelming to write, responding to KSC provides you with a fantastic opportunity to give recruiters an insight into your capabilities prior to an interview. This is especially important if you are changing industr...ies or applying for a promotion, as you can highlight the transferable skills that you have already gained over your career. Some tips for responding to Key Selection Criteria: -Give specific examples -Use a framework, such as SAO (Situation, Action and Outcome) or STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to give context and show the impact of your actions -Be succinct; ensure that each word adds value If a job that you are applying for requires KSC and you’re finding the idea of writing it overwhelming, get in touch to discuss your options!
