25.01.2022 Mr Riggs - museum tasting I am not going to say too much about this as we are going to be doing a vertical tasting masterclass on some stunners, watch out for the date as it is limited numbers and very limited stock.



23.01.2022 Sons of Eden These wines are client favorites, with a solid range of wines expressing the region. Their Freya Riesling is take-home for me and actually was a WSET exam wine last year, which helped me immensely. Cirrus Riesling from vineyards in High Eden, is a show stopper and a delight. On point, floral and lemon on lime. The winner reds for me on the day were ... Remus and Romulus Shiraz and the Selene Tempranillo. However the Pumpa Cabernet and Zephyrus Shiraz, never disappoint. Simon spent and inordinate amount of time and explained Sons history and business model, and I have to say it is very savvy. With their own valley floor vineyards, contract growers, and a facility of their own production , contract winemaking and bulk juice sales. 22.01.2022 Chateau Tanunda What an amazing and impressive sight. Probably the most grandiose winery outside of France. Shannon at the cellar door took us through a wonderful tasting flight of 150yr Semillon, 50yr Cab, 50yr Shiraz, 100 yr Shiraz, Everest Grenache, Everest Shiraz. We were also blessed with an introduction to John Gerber, and I caught up with Neville the winemaker.... The cellar door is stunning and under Shannon's hand is a magnificent area, with history on the walls and the wines being showcased beautifully. The wines are outstanding, with the Grand Barossa ranges being one of the best mid range GSM and Shiraz around. My pick would have to be the 50yr old Shiraz with lashings of chocolate and rich complex fruits. See more

19.01.2022 Dowie Doole The Estate range of Dowie Doole is a firm favourite of Purple Palate and is my personal take home wine. So I wanted to look at the next tiers of their wines. Having a tasting overlooking the vineyards in their cellar door was all salubrious experience, and the guys have really nailed the use of space and view. The Mr G CSM and CT Shiraz were excellent, but for me the BFG Grenache and the Cali Road Shiraz were standouts.... The Cali Road particularly ticked my boxes, and for $60 drank as well, if not better than some $100 bottles. Chris has formed a young vibrant team, especially his marketing manager Olivia who's skill set surpasses her years. Thanks to Fay, Chris and especially Olivia for my time there. See more



17.01.2022 Kangarilla Road and Silent Noise I am blessed in my job to meet interesting people, learning their stories and drinking wine with them. I hadn't met Kevin, Helen or Charlie before but it felt like I had just dropped in on old friends to catch up. They really make you feel welcome. Kangarilla Road wines are classic Mclaren Vale styles with a couple of cracking exceptions. Their Primitivo/Zinfindel planting yield some great grapes and made into more of an American style Zin, t...han a Puligan Primitivo. Bold flavours that have a lengthy flavourful finish. The top line Zin is a true delight and should be on many more tables. The Primitivo is a little lighter and doesn't have the intensity and length of the Zin but it is an awesome BBQ wine. The Shiraz from Kangarilla is classic McLaren Vale but has more Red and Dark fruits than Blue fruits but lashings of chocolates and after trying some back vintages I can see these wines cellaring well. Silent noise I have to do independently, as while in the same O'Brien family, and sharing cellar door and tasting lineup is it's own animal. Owned, grown, and made by Charlie he has brought his own maverick winemaking ideas, from his time working overseas. Across the board he aims to make his wines lighter, brighter and spicier. He does his version of a GSM with Shiraz Grenache and Zinfandel. That has clever blending to get juicy, but lighter flavours, and where the Mouvedre brings colour and tanin, the Zin brings colour and juiciness. For me his Cloudy but Fine Chardonnay, and Cloudy but Fine Primitivo were stand outs. Now I am going to qualify I am not a winemaker, but after tasting the Primitivo (especially after Kevin's) the wine took on much more nutty characters and brighter aromatics, with a much lighter body. It was explained that the wine was put under Flor, a Sherry wine making techniques to protect it from oxidation and to enhance aromas and reducing the body (as the Flor eats glycerol). It is literally unique for red wine making but well worth exploring. Did I mention Charlie is 4 years out of year 12? Making him the youngest winemaker in the area. I can see big things in this young man's future. See more

11.01.2022 Torbreck Wow cellar doors in Barossa have all lifted their game. A beautiful vista overlooking olive trees and vineyards where old world meets new world architecture of the cellar door at Torbreck is a great experience. Taken through the vineyards of the Western Ridge and then a tasting by the esteemed Ian Honky Hongill. I've met Ian previously as head winemaker of Peter Lehmanns and it was a pleasure to see him in his new role as chief winemaker and GM of Torbreck.... He talked of the ethos of the company and why they do what they do, which is "Let the dog run". Which means let the fruit ripen, then show the wines at their best. On the wall are 4 of the 6 soil types they work with on their vineyards. Each soil type brings different characters to the wine and for a wine nerd like me was an invaluable conversation. The wines themselves: Holy God, the wines do command a high price but are so worth it. Single vineyard expressions and top end Grenache and Shiraz are what Torbeck does best, but apon saying that the Woodcutters Shiraz is an absolute ripper. Wine of the day was between the MRV, the Hillside Grenache and the Gask Eden Valley Shiraz, and of course the Runrig. As a postscript I acknowledge that Honkey is the biggest meat eater I've ever met, with his 1.25kg steak prepped for his dinner looking like some of the best beef around. See more

10.01.2022 Coriole If you are looking a fantastic epicurean experience you cannot go past Corioles winery restaurant. Great food, great service, and (most importantly for me) great wine. Coriole has championed Mediterranean varieties from the get go, and are probably the fore most exponent. I have loved their Sangiovese for years and the Nero has found a home in many of my clients cellars.... They do a fantastic Fiano, a couple of Chenins, and now a Negroamaro. As a cherry on top they also produce wonderful Shiraz and Cabernet. Peter graciously took me through the barrel room and hosted a tasting trying everything from Prosecco to the Lloyd Shiraz. If there was a weak wine in the lineup then I didn't see it. All are typical of varietal and stylistically show as Mclaren vale. If you get to Mclaren Vale first thing to do is book a lunch and ask for paired wines, turn up an hour before seating and do a tasting at the cellar door, then load the car up with some wines and Corioles cheeses and olives and while the late afternoon on the deck with friends. 10.01.2022 Thistledown How could one turn down an offer of a drink with bloke called Paddy Gilhooley. I had to do some serious research as I have never heard of this small producer. Owned and operated by 2 masters of wine both currently overseas, this winery produces Grenache at a contract wine production facility in Adelaide hills called Revenir. They source fruit from very small very premium growers from Mclaren vale and high Eden Valley and make the wines in lighter more aromatic st...yles. When I say small production the numbered bottles said x of 950 and x of 2106. In saying that both wines got number 1 and 2 best grenache at the Mclaren vale wine show in 2019. Paddy was an awesome host and as we talked the same names we both knew kept coming up. Sue Trott of 5 Geese fame is one if their premium growers and Joel Mattschoss of Eden Valley who I know produces some top quality stuff for the Advanced Release. The best value would be She's Electric but the best of the best for me was the Charming man. I really look forward to catching up with Paddy soon and we sadly had to run to get to the Vale See more

09.01.2022 Brockenchack wines Just to be clear I am employed by Trevor Harch the owner of Brockenchack wines, so take as much or as little as you want of this review. Eden valley is above the Barossa Valley floor and sits at 450m to 560m(pewsey vale vineyards if high Eden) above sea level. This means(generally) cooler climate, more aromatic and due to the limestone subsoil elegant finer wines. Certain sites in Eden Vale can give powerful dark fruit and lashings of dark chocolate. ... Brockenchack is one of those sites. Known for Shiraz and Riesling, Trevor is a bit of a maverick and with advice from locals and young winemakers decided to plant Cabernet, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Grenache and Pinot Noir. Yes Pinot Noir and not for sparkling production. We tasted the new and upcoming releases. The Riesling is crisp lemon, lime and floral. The Rose is Shiraz based and upfront red fruit with a dry finish. The Pinot Noir is dark fruits, with a savoury edge and an earthy finish (really the surprise of the wines, and could be mistaken for a big Central Otago Pinot) The Zip line Shiraz is 2018 and a real cracker, and an absolute steal. The Jack Harrison 2016 is a true powerhouse Shiraz, big dense, structured, a Barossa lovers Shiraz. I also got at a look at very very special releases, but currently cannot say anything at the moment, but watch this space for what I feel is the most deserved release for the estate. The cellar door is up and running for tastings and a huge investment in infrastructure has been undertaken for frost, disease, pests and bird mitigation. Onsite storage and logistics with plans for a full winery and barrel room underway. The winery is Trevs legacy and an amazing legacy it is. Jack, his grandson is working onsite and the guy can seriously work. He is literally a Jack of all trades. Get there is you can or drink the wines if you can't. See more

06.01.2022 Zonte's Footsteps I have known and worked with Brad Rey(canadian made good) for quite awhile, and am a big lover of his wines. I've seen his range expand and his quality expectations rise. He has been in the industry for a very long time and made wine all around the world. His business partner Anna(who I met for the first time) has also been in the industry overseeing the financial and managerial of large Cooperative wineries.... Together they have consolidated their talents and capital to take control. They spoke about the Zonte's Footsteps ethos: Affordable wine that expresses the grape that shows the regions. The range is broad, dynamic but is squarely aimed at medium bodied wine lovers. The whole range is solid, well priced and great drinking with major sellers being chocolate factory Shiraz, Love sign Grenache and Violet Beauregard Malbec. Personally I fell in love with the new offering Shiraz Cabernet and the Z Force. They have a new organic range hitting the market soon so keep an eye out. See more



03.01.2022 Langmeil We wandered into Langmeil and had to play, throw the stick with the dog, a lovely puppy owned by the groundsman. Leigh took us around the the winery and into the family cellar. See below. On trying the range the Bella Rose Cabernet based Rose was lovely and the MRV in the 3 gardens ticked all the boxes. Then out came the Reds with 5th wave grenache being excellent.... We then walked the vineyards of the Orphan bank and Freedom. While the Freedom has the rich history that matches the wine, the Orphan bank is the one that made me smile, saving ancestor vines from development and then giving people a chance to parent them. The Orphan bank wine was excellent and a real must for any wine lover. Overall this winery offers some of the best value wines that present beautifully See more
