12.01.2022 Behaviour is a form of communication and emotional expression. A child's behaviour or meltdown communicates a need for connection and help. "I need help learning to feel and deal with frustration..."... "I need help containing my excitement..." "I need help communicating my disappointment..." "I need to build skills in taking turns...waiting patiently" "I am overwhelmed and I need your guidance to solve this problem.." Self-regulation is a skill, like all other skills learnt during infancy and childhood, that needs time and space to develop. Self-regulation develops and is fostered within relationships, particularly within the parent-child relationship. If we tune in and respond with empathy and kindness, our child builds skills, but more importantly, they receive the message that their experiences and emotions are true and important. When we soothe our children through connection they learn how to show compassion to themselves and others, whilst weathering and overcoming some of life's inevitable challenges and storms. This is one of parentings toughest challenges. As parents we can be easily activated in to a fight/flight/freeze response, especially when the child's expression of emotion or the communication of a need is challenging and we dont have a clear way to hold and soothe our child in this space. Connected Kids Online Parenting Tune brings together the art and the science of child development within the context of a secure relationship. It offers practical strategies to foster your child's development during small everyday moments as well as the hard ones, the storms. If this is sounds like something you are looking for, get in before the end of June to receive the program for our introductory price of $99 (usually $150)! #parentingwithpurpose #purposefulparentingau

12.01.2022 Parenting can be joyful, fulfilling and meaningful. It can also be overwhelming. In our online parenting program, Connected Kids, we have a whole module dedicated to responding to our child in their wobbly moments. When our kids have meltdowns we can feel helpless, angry and stressed. Meltdowns are a sign that a child is completely overwhelmed. Their nervous system has perceived threat and they are in survival mode. In order to soothe a meltdown, we need to first look at our ...own nervous system. Can I soothe myself? Next, we need to give "cues of safety" to our overwhelmed child. We need to be communicating with the survival part of their brain (not the reasonable, language based parts, they have gone offline!). Consider; -less words -kind eyes/tone of voice -lowering body stature to reduce perception of threat (squat or lay down) -riding out the wave of emotion with your child (not trying to get rid of it!) -holding clear boundaries regarding safety: "You are so upset. I won't let you hurt me" -simple, validating phrases "You are very angry" If you would like more information about soothing meltdowns and then holding limits, Connected Kids is $99 for one more day (usual price $150). https://parentingwithpurpose.podia.com/connectedkids

08.01.2022 Living in a stressful, fast-paced world can often lead to a day-to-day life of rigidity, structure and control. We need to plan, find the quickest and easiest way of doing things. When a little chaos enters the day we feel overwhelmed and stressed, and we quickly move to gain back control. Kids on the other hand, are a natural source of chaos. They are busy, energetic and curious. They are natural scientists (and often their experiments create some work for their grown ups).... Kids live in the moment, as they learn about the world and their place in it. There is so much beauty in a childs natural way of being in the world, and it often goes against our fast-paced life style, leading us to experience it as stress rather than awe or delight. Maybe if we slowed down, we could learn to meet our kids in the middle. The space between control and chaos, a place of flexibility. #parentingwithpurpose #purposefulparentingau #curiosity #childdevelopment
