02.01.2022 Sunday November 18: Panama House's first charity brunch was a cranking success, raising more than double its target. On Sunday, November 18 the Bondi restaurant raised over $10,000 for OneWave, a non-profit surf community tackling mental health issues with a simple philosophy - saltwater therapy. The charity brunch was hosted by TV personality Liv Phyland.... There were live and silent auctions prizes including a getaway to Bali, Aquabumps photography and Disrupt surfboard. Guest speakers talked about the importance of voicing mental health issues and shared their personal experiences. Panama House's managing partner, Geraint Coles, said the intention was to build on the restaurant's philosophy of a place "where cultures meet" whilst contributing to and supporting the local Bondi community. "People are used to charity dinners and formal balls but seeing as we are in the brunch space it allowed us to do something that had local significance and global impact," he said. The Sunday Brunch Benefit ticket price of $145 included a $50 donation to OneWave for the five hour event; guests were served mimosas, bloody marys, rosé, micheladas and beer. Veuve Clicquot was the key sponsor for the event with free-flowing French champagne while guests kicked on until 5 pm. Nearly 100 people dressed up in their Sunday best for the event - and added a touch of fluoro. "We wanted it to feel a little glam and the fluoro is a signature of the OneWave initiative. A big part of what they do is 'Fluoro Fridays', open surf classes on Friday mornings and everyone wears fluoro while they surf," Geraint says. "The idea is to bring visibility to mental health issues and not shy away from the topic ABOUT GRANT TREBILICO One Wave founder Grant battled mental health issues, without seeking treatment, for a decade before being hospitalised and diagnosed with bi-piolar disorder in 2012. In tough times, surfing was his saviour. When he was released from hospital, he went straight to the ocean and discovered that one wave is all it takes. After hiding his mental health issues for years, he decided enough was enough. It was time to start talking and sharing his experience to try and help others. Maybe if I share the simple recipe of saltwater, surfing and talking about mental health I can prevent people from ever feeling the way I did," he said. So one Friday morning, he dressed up in a shirt and tie and went surfing solo at Bondi to spark conversations about mental health. That was the first OneWave Board Meeting. Just four Board Meetings later, Flouro Friday’s were born, where everyone is invited to wear something fluoro, come along to a Board Meeting, surf and have a chat. This initiative, born on Bondi beach, has now spread to over 50 beaches worldwide.
