24.01.2022 The sour cherries have ripened sooner than expected so we will open this Sunday (22 December) just for that purpose. 9am - 12 noon finish picking - all out by 1pm please. No early starts... Cash only - no cards No toilets (there are council ones further along the main road on the way into Lenswood). Park in the normal paddock/car park and walk along the driveway to the house. Go straight past the front of the house and come up the wooden steps to the verandah from where we will lend you a bucket (guaranteed never to have been used by Greta Thunberg). Come back to same place when you have finished picking. $5/kg - (anyone would think it was Christmas.)
24.01.2022 Update Saturday 30 Dec 2:05pm Still enough fruit for people to pick, so it's still OK to come. But *please*!- no starting after 4pm - we absolutely must close altogether at 5pm.
18.01.2022 Update 19 December 21:20. There's really not much left now. The remaining sour cherries still have a good way to go before they will be really ripe. The sweet cherries that remain should be fine until then - they'll certainly be nice and sweet. So.... Nothing is going to happen before Christmas. After Christmas we'll have another look and see if we can maybe open midweek when the sour cherries are ready. We don't have enough stuff for another weekend opening - too many people would come and be disappointed. We do everything we can to help you avoid a wasted trip. If you follow us here on Facebook - that's: https://www.facebook.com/PYOCherries/ and have the appropriate notifications set up you'll get an immediate update on your smartphone or computer. Also the phone message on 8389 8500 and the website www.cherries.net.au are kept up to date too. Sorry to disappoint you all. As advised at the outset, it wasn't a very big crop and when we did open the level of demand was very high.
12.01.2022 We are unaffected by the fires except that people coming from north of Adelaide will need to come up Magill Road/Adelaide Lobethal Road - obviously the Gorge Road/Cudlee Creek approaches will not be open. Magill Road amd Greenhill Road should be fine.
11.01.2022 Update Saturday 30 Dec 10:55am Only a tiny bit of rain earlier on - most of it missed us, passing by both to the north and the south. Should be completely fine from now on. ... Still plenty of fruit to pick.
11.01.2022 Unfortunately the current (ie 2019-20) season is shaping up to be similar to last year - so we are unlikely to open for the picking and sale of sweet cherries. We had a very low set, on account mainly of cold weather at blossom time. Most growers locally seem to have a lower than average set but that sort of thing has always affected our block more than most - conversely we have other advantages when the weather is muggy - but that's not the case this year. As a result it's n...ot worth putting the nets out so the birds will end up getting what little there is. The picking experience would not have been good even if we had gone ahead. There's a slim chance that the birds might not turn up - if that happens we can work with what's there. That did happen one year when we only netted a portion of the block but ended up having people pick cherries which had not been watered, sprayed, or netted at all - that doesn't happen very often though. The sour cherries look to be fine and we shall probably open for just one or two days like we did last year for people who want those. That will be at the very end of the normal sweet cherry seaons aorund here - so probably after Christmas.
11.01.2022 Update Saturday 30 Dec 8:45pm All over now for the season.
11.01.2022 Update Thur 28 Dec 5pm We will open on: Saturday 30 December 9am - 5pm (latest start 4pm)... for the last time this season. The remaining sour cherries are now ripe and there are still some very good sweet cherries sprinkled around the orchard. The picking (of sweet cherries0 won't be as easy as when we first opened so everything (sweet and sour alike) will be priced at $7/kg. There are a lot more sweet cherries around than I origianlly anticipated but if we start to run low during the day I'll do an update here, on the phone message and on the website www.cherries.net.au.
10.01.2022 Bad news. We shall not now be opening this year for PYO of sweet cherries. We survived the hail (just) - but on account of the bad weather here during blossom time we only had a small crop. It was a borderline decision to go ahead and open with such a small crop. Since then predations by birds have been so bad that it simply isn't worth netting what remains. That means that the birds will end up getting the lot. ... Normally birds aren't a problem until the fruit is much closer to being ripe. This year they are here in huge numbers and they are desperately hungry. They are eating fruit that is still green. It may be on account of the dry conditions further inland during winter. We do have a good crop of sour cherries. We don't normally net them anyway. If they survive we shall open, probably just for one day - to shift them. That will most probably be after Christmas - so keep checking here for updates.
08.01.2022 If you want to buy the place see the website (www.cherries.net.au) for more details.
07.01.2022 I'll be open Friday 28 December 10am - 12am just for sour cherries. Obviously the hot weather has brought them to ripeness earier than expected. I don't expect to be open any weekend days and they may well all go on Friday - they're not as prolific as they look - a tree's worth soon disappears into a bucket. It will be cash only - no cards - no toilets (there are council toilets further along the main road in Lenswood) . Please park up in the usual place and come to the house - I'll work from there.
06.01.2022 Update 16 December 20:30. Not much left now. Sour cherries people needed to pick selectively - so what's left is stuff that needs a bit more time to ripen. Maybe a few sweet cherries left but not much. Some very hot weather and then some rain predicted so we'll have to wait and see how things look after that. We'll do an update round about Wednesday here... on the website www.cherries.net.au and on the phone: 08 8389 8500 We do everything we can to help you avoid a wasted trip. If you follow us on Facebook and have the appropriate notifications set up you'll get an immediate update on your smartphone or computer.
