03.01.2022 Thanks to Sally Wardlaw from the Avoca Library for her review of 'Out of the Forest', by Gregory P. Smith In equal parts sad and inspirational, this honest account of one man’s life journey so far is truly captivating. Out of the Forest could well be the best book you read all year! Based on Gregory Smith, a down-and-out homeless man, who decided to make the isolated rainforest in northern New South Wales his home in 1990. He felt it was the first time in his life that he h...ad a true sense of belonging in the world. Sleeping on a bed of fern fronds, drinking creek water, foraging for food and roasting bats on the campfire all became a part of his daily ritual for survival. Fast forward ten years, Gregory is near death from lack of sustenance and alcohol and drug abuse. He became delusional and emaciated before he made the decision to give up his forest dwelling lifestyle and return to society to give it another chance. His adaption to civilization, ability to overcome great challenges and perseverance to gain a university education is reference to Gregory’s ongoing resilience. A riveting and extraordinary read. Highly recommended

02.01.2022 JOIN US IN CONVERSATION WITH SIR PETER COSGOVE ON MONDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2020 Pyrenees Libraries is pleased to support Frankston City Libraries and Mornington Peninsula Library Service’s presentation of General Sir Peter Cosgrove ‘in conversation’ on Monday 9 November at 6pm. Sir Peter Cosgrove will discuss his extraordinarily full and eventful life, and his new memoir, 'You shouldn’t have joined'. This free event is presented via Zoom on the following link - https://bit.ly/35wyz...pm - bookings are essential. General Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC (Mil) CVO MC (Retd) is a former Governor General of Australia. He saw action in Vietnam, winning the Military Cross, and became Chief of the Australian Defence Force. After his retirement from the Army, he was invited to take charge of the relief and rebuilding operation in Queensland after the devastation of Cyclone Larry. In 2014, Sir Peter was appointed Governor-General by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia. As Governor-General he travelled far and wide, supporting Australians in times of crisis, sadness, joy or celebration. Sir Peter’s recently published memoir, ‘You Shouldn't Have Joined’ is an account of his full and eventful life, and those with whom he has shared it. His memoir provides insights into the role of Australia's Governor-General, when two prime ministers were toppled by their own party, and when disasters struck. Our ‘In Conversation’ will provide everyone with a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of a well known and regarded Australian.
