13.01.2022 With the introduction of our wave painting to our gallery I thought I’d introduce you to the artist Brett Whiteley. Though I can’t find any record of it now, I recall an art teacher once set us an exercise inspired by a Whiteley quote that went something among the lines of past the point of frustration is where you create great art. The exercise was to paint the same thing 20 times. I was told that Whiteley set himself exercise with a series of wave sketches which led to hi...s notable seascape paintings. Brett Whiteley AO (7 April 1939 15 June 1992) is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. He won the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, and was the first artist to win all 3 in the same year. He also set record for the highest selling price for an Australian artwork. He worked across painting, sculpture and the graphic arts, and is best known for his sensual figurative Expressionism paintings of interiors, nudes and harbour scenes. As I’m driving around town I often see scenes that remind me of the paintings of Jeffrey Smart Jeffrey Smart AO (1921 2013) was an Australian painter known for his precise geometric urban landscapes, which are said to be "full of private jokes and playful allusions".... Smart mostly used bold primary colours against dark grey skies. This created the striking effect of foregrounds that are fully lit despite the dark sky, not unlike what we see at the end of a storm. His painting process was long and heavily planned, resulting in barely a dozen finished canvases a year. "I always do a lot of preliminary drawings, moving the forms, the shadows, the buildings the figures around the canvas till I get that perfect composition ..." Smart spent most of his working life in Italy but continued to exhibit in Australia where he enjoyed popular and critical success.
