25.01.2022 When I turned the proverbial three score years and ten yesterday my family presented me with a beautiful gift of a 70th Birthday Book, recording my life from my earliest years until now. Thankyou family for all the work you put into producing it. And to my son in law, Nathan for the beautiful formatting, which must have taken hours and hours of work. A Tassie friend who likes to help me keep my feet on the ground, commented "Well old fella, you've achieved your allotted life span. It's extra-time from here on in!" Twenty years ago I wrote a little book about the importance of living the moment. Now at 70, I'm reminded again to make the most of every day and every moment of every day. And that, as the psalmist writes, "My times are in God's hands." (Psalm 31.15) So are yours.
24.01.2022 Growing older can be one of the loneliest times in life. I recall my late father-in-law, Clem Kent, keeping count of the number of men who were dying, having served with him in Tasmania's only totally Tasmanian battalion, the Second Fortieth. They'd survived almost four years in Changi, but inevitably age was catching up with them. There is a loneliness in watching your peers die while you live on. I remember my mum, Laurel, having the same experience. Christmas can also be a lonely time; for those who live alone; for those estranged from family; for those living in a foreign country. How about this Christmas we make an effort to connect with those who may be alone, to say hello to someone who is looking lonely, to reach out to them with God's love?
16.01.2022 By 2030, when all baby boomers will be 65 or older there will be almost four million Australians in this age group. Advances in health mean that many people will live for twenty or thirty years past retirement age. If you're a Baby Boomer and a person of faith chances are you'll want to do more than just sun yourself in Queensland. A sense of purpose is as important in the retirement years/fourth quarter as it is at any stage of life. Christian Ministry Advancement has designed a tool called Engaging Q4 to help you successfully navigate your fourth quarter. Check it out at https://www.cma.net.au/q4/engaging.php
12.01.2022 One of our Engaging Q4 course participants commented recently on his surprise at the amount of ageism in Australian society. I've noticed many ageist comments concerning Covid-19. "It's only older people who get Covid (not true) and they're going to die soon anyway!" The implication being that we should have just let it rip to save the economy. In his book, On the Brink of Everything, Parker Palmer identifies the ageist message that our youth-oriented culture often communicat...es to older people, "It's time to withdraw from serious engagement with a world that's changing so rapidly you can't possibly keep up. So, take up harmless hobbies and hang out at home!" Those of us who are older have at least as much to contribute to our world as anyone else. We need to push back against such a discriminatory message. https://www.cma.net.au/q4/engaging.php
10.01.2022 There's no doubt that human beings are hardwired for purpose. https://www.cslewisinstitute.org/Purposeful_Living_for_Toda
05.01.2022 Christians may retire from a career, but do we ever retire from being Christian? http://www.imtglobal.org//9//dont-retire-from-your-calling
