25.01.2022 Our students have so much fun learning Arabic alphabets while playing Snakes and Submarines. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

25.01.2022 Tonight, on the eve of the Day of Sacrifice, Hujjaj will sleep in a 5 billion stars hotel. At Muzdalifah there are no hotels, not tents. Just you, rocky ground,... and billions of stars. You find an empty-ish spot, you pray Maghrib and Isha combined, you lay your mattress, and you sleep. You sleep to the symphony of millions of snores. Nobody cares about your status. Or your wealth. You sleep on the same ground. You have to queue for the same toilet. You are just like everyone else. You are a slave. A slave of the Almighty. Muzdalifah is truly an ego crushing experience. You are forced to be humbled before the Almighty. #hajj1440 #hajjmemories #hajjthrowback #hajj

24.01.2022 Of all the pillars of Islam, Hajj is probably the most challenging to teach as it involves specific places that most of our students have never been to or seen. To help them learn better, we decided to do a mock Hajj and have our students go through the rituals of Hajj in our own backyard. May Allah allow us to visit His house and perform Hajj soon.

23.01.2022 Join us at 7 p.m. today. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

22.01.2022 The past few weeks we have been discussing about Madhhab: History, Significance and Relevance, as well as talking about Bidaah from both the majority and the Salafi point of view. It is our aim that we learn to love together harmoniously regardless of our madhhab and religious orientation. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

20.01.2022 Hidden Arrogance

20.01.2022 The love of desirable things is made alluring for menwomen, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farml...andthese may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to. [Prophet], say, Would you like me to tell you of things that are better than all of these? Their Lord will give those who are mindful of God Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will stay with pure spouses and Gods good pleasureGod is fully aware of His servants [Ali Imran: 14 - 15] - One of the beauty of Islam is its balanced approach towards life of this world and the hereafter. God is not saying that wanting to have a good life in this world is evil. He created us loving the creatures of comfort of life. It is okay to want comfortable house, nice cars, and a healthy bank account. But while pursuing success in this world, a Muslims is not someone who is shortsighted. We realise that eternal success is attaining Paradise in the hereafter. Therefore we will never sacrifice morality for short term success in this world. We will stick by our moral code, even if that means we suffer a little setback in this world for the sake of success in the Hereafter. We do not cheat in transactions not because we fear of getting caught by the authorities, but because we know that short term luxury of this world will have a negative effect on our success in the Akhirah. P/s: the Mushaf in the photo is written in the Moroccan script based on the narration of Warsh from Nafi. It was a gift form one of my Quran sheikhs in Egypt, Sheikh Abdul Raheem al-Banna when I was studying the same narration with him.

12.01.2022 It is locked down Friday again. We've done this last year, so we can, of course, do it again this year. Let's refresh what should we do. There is a maxim in Islam that goes: "What can't be done completely should not be abandon totally."... What it means is that just because we can't go for Friday prayers today, we should not throw away the entire sunnah of Friday. Friday is still an important day for Muslims, and there are many other things that we can do. 1 First off, let's look good today. Yes, we have been in locked down for five days. It is time to get out of our t-shirt and put on something nice. Go brush your teeth, get a shower, put on some perfume, and put on a nice shirt. 2 Secondly: read surah al-Kahf. Now that we have some extra time since we are not listening to a khutbah take some time to read its meaning too. Or tune in to your favourite sheikh on YouTube doing a tafsir of this great surah. 3 Thirdly: Do lots of salawat on the Prophet. Rasulullah s.a.w. said that our deeds are presented to him on Friday, and he likes it if we increase prayers upon him today. So do that. 4 Finally: Just because we don't pray Jumuah, doesn't mean we don't pray at all. Don't forget to pray Zuhr at home. And if you can, do a jamaah prayer with your family. So those are four simple things we can do to make our Friday special. Oh, one last thing: don't forget to make lots of du'a, especially after 'Asr. May Allah protects us, our family and our community from Covid-19. May Allah protects us from the bush fire. May Allah send down rain to put down the fire. May Allah protect the firefighters and medical team and all the frontliners who are risking their lives to keep us safe. May Allah bless the family of the frontliners and send down peace and tranquillity in their homes. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

11.01.2022 Tomorrow is the Day of Arafah. Rasulullah s.a.w said that those who fast on the 9th of Dhulhijjah, Allah will expiate his sins of the past and coming year. Tomorrow is also a Thursday, a day that is sunnah to fast.... Make the intention to fast for the Day of Arafah and Thursday. May Allah reward us for both by fasting for one day. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

09.01.2022 The Best Prayer is the Prayer of Arafah The Prophet said: The best prayer is the prayer of the Day of Arafah. The best thing which I and the Prophets before me have said is: ... La ilaha illAllahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu yuhi wa yumit wa huwa hayyun la yamut bi yadihi-khayr wa `ala kulli shayin qadir There is no deity save Allah alone. He has no partners. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise. He brings life and brings death and He is the Living Who never dies. To Him belongs all good. He has power over all things. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

07.01.2022 One day Rasulullah s.a.w. saw Saiduna Muadh ibn Jabal making wudhu with more water than is needed. "What wastage is this, Muadh?" asked Rasulullah. "Is there wastage in wudhu?" replied Muadh.... "Yes, even if you take wudhu in a flowing river, said the Prophet of Allah. Water conservation and conserving the environment, in general, is an essential part of being a good Muslim. One should not waste water, even in the act of worship. We are not allowed to pluck leaves, let alone cut down trees unnecessarily, while in the state of Ihram which is the most peaceful state one can be in. We are also not allowed of the same in the battlefield. Such is the care that is shown towards the environment. Lets care for the environment. Planet earth is a trust given to us by Allah. Take good care of it. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath #qaswaquest

06.01.2022 Rasulullah s.a.w encouraged us to read surah al-Kahf every Friday. There are many narrations on the virtues of this surah, especially relating to issues of the ...end of times. The Prophet said that this surah is our protector during these challenging times. There are many blessings that come with reciting the Quran. Every letter we read gives us ten rewards from Allah. And we affirm the spiritual benefits and protection that comes from reading particular surah at certain times. However, we are missing a lot if we just stop at that. Quran was sent down as guidance to humanity, and Allah commanded us to do tadabbur, or deep reflection, of the Quran to be guided by the Quran. The surahs or ayat that are part of our daily repertoire do not just contain profound spiritual blessings, but they hold great lessons to guide us navigate our daily lives. Now back to surah al-Kahf. This surah is not just about spiritual protection from Dajjal (anti-Christ), but it is also our spiritual GPS living in an age of confusion. Here are four lessons that are in just the first aya. This, of course, not an exhaustive list. The list will go on the deeper you go into your reflection. "Praise be to God, who sent down the Scripture to His servant and made it unerringly straight." [al-Kahf: 1] 1. Allah begins this surah with Alhamdulillah. One of the few surahs that starts with the word al-hamd. Hamd is an Arabic word that has no direct one-word translation in English. It is a combination of praise and gratitude. So when you say al-Hamdu liLlah, you are praising and thanking Allah at the same time. From the outset, this aya reminds us to be grateful to God. Gratitude is a concept that is lost to so many in this modern age. We currently live in an age of abundance. We are probably the first generation in history where we have more than what we need. Yes, famine is a problem in certain places in the world, but it is not due to lack of resources. Instead, it is a problem of distribution of resources. In many parts of the world, people are dying due to over-eating. Today we take a lot of blessing for granted. The fact that we do not need to worry about food is a great blessing. In most of human history, we never the kind of food security that we have today. If we have a roof over our head to protect us from rain and sun, we should count ourselves immensely blessed. But instead of being grateful, we whine. We whine about how bad our day is because the cafe that we frequent ran out of almond milk for our latte. We had to drink full cream dairy milk. How atrocious! A bad week is when Netflix remove our favourite show from its listing. How dare you, Netflix! 2. Al-Hamdu liLlah brings us back to earth. Humbles us down and reminds us of the importance of being grateful. Open our eyes and look around; there are so many reasons for us to be thankful. However, this surah wants us to focus on one particular blessing the blessing of the Quran. Allah has chosen us to be part of the ummah of the Final Testament. The Quran is our guide and our moral compass. Even if we have nothing of this world, we have the Quran our connection to the Divine. Of all the creations of the known and unknown universe(s), God chose to communicate with us and provide us with means of communicating with Him. 3. In this aya, Allah said that He sent down the Quran to His servant. There many titles that Allah uses in the Quran to address Prophet Muhammad like the Prophet, the Messenger, or even by his name, Muhammad. But in this surah, Allah uses His servant. Being the direct recipient of the Quran is such a great honour, and Allah addressing the Prophet as His servant may seem like a paradox. This is how Allah reminds us that the highest position that a human can achieve is to be a servant of Allah. In an age of me, myself, and I, a weekly reminder from God that we are ultimately His servants is apt. One of the reasons our society is broken is because of the hyper-egoistic culture that we are living in today. As as I feel good, it has to be good for me. Forget about everybody else; forget about the environment. As long as I get what I want, everybody else can mind their own business. This aya is a reminder that we are not here to serve our ego. We are here to serve God and His creations. Happiness is found when we live in harmony with the commands of God. To be truly happy is to fulfil our raison dtre - to be a servant of God. 4. Finally, Allah said that the Quran is unerringly straight. In an age of relativity, Allah reminds us that the Truth is absolute. Human is a fickle creature. If we are to leave the Truth to whims and fancies of humanity, it is going to be a constantly moving goal post. Something illegal today can be legal tomorrow and forbidden to go against the day after. In all this confusion and mess, Allah provides us with clear and absolute Truth in the Quran. While it is true that the law needs to evolve to adapt to the ever-changing life, the principles must be rooted in something absolute. This is where revelation comes in. The Quran is eternal, yet our understanding of it can evolve based on certain principles. This is unerringly straight Book is our compass to navigate the maelstrom of the life of this world. Now, lets get back to reading Surah al-Kahf.

05.01.2022 Children learn best in a multi-sensory environment; where the audio, visual, and kinaesthetic sensors are activated. In winter we had a story night at Qaswa. 04.01.2022 Today is the Day of Sacrifice. The 10th of Dhulhijjah. Hujjaj commemorate this day by observing the stoning ritual, a ritual done by Prophet Ibrahim. When it co...mes to picking the pebbles, Rasulullah s.a.w reminded us to not fall into two extremes by picking a big rock or picking pebble that is too small. The pebble should be about the size of one phalanx of our finger. He said; . . Beware of extremism in religion. For nations before you were destroyed due to extremism in religion. Islam is a religion of balance between ritual and spiritual. One extreme is to go hyper-ritual with the practices of the religion that we ignore the spirituality of the rituals. We are concern with the outer dimension of the religion only. We argue like there is no tomorrow about the length of ones beard, how high do we raise our hands when praying, where do we place our hands, whether we do Eid with local sighting or global sighting, hand slaughter or machine slaughter, and many more. We sacrifice kindness for the sake of these rituals. Another form of extremism is going super-spiritual and throwing away the rituals. Believing that prayers are not important as long as one remembers God. As long as one has a good heart, there is no need for rituals. Islam is the middle path. We affirm and practice the rituals. And the rituals lead to spiritual growth. Rituals make us a better person. Prayers make us an honest worker or businessman. Fasting makes us into a kinder person. Reading the Quran makes us into a charitable human. We practice our religion in a balance as Imam al-Ghazali mentioned in his book Ihya Ulum ad-Din, The best affairs are those that are balanced. #hajj1440 #hajjmemories #throwbackhajj

03.01.2022 Rasulullah s.a.w said that Hajj is Arafah. Today is the most important day of Hajj. And the greatest day of the year. Arafah is a day of deep reflection. As so...on as Dhuhr time comes, we combine Dhuhr and Asr prayers. And immediately after that we spend the rest of our day making dua and dhikr. Only at Arafat, on the Day of Arafah dhikr supersedes solah. You see millions of people in various positions - standing, sitting, lying down; in different conditions - airconditioned tents, tents with fans, not tents all directly under the hot sun; reminds us of the great gathering at Mahshar. Humans, from the time of Adam, will be standing waiting for Allahs judgement. But not all of us will stand equal. Some will be shaded by Allah, some will elevated and adorn with a crown, some unfortunately will stand miserably on the Day when there is no shade but His shade. In Arafat, just like anything else in this world, we purchase our comfort with our wealth. But our wealth has no value when we stand before Allah on Mahshar. The only valuable commodity is our iman and good deeds. These two, when combined, will save us at Mahshar. May Allah make us from among those that are shaded under His shade on that Day. #hajj1440 #hajjmemories #throwbackhajj

02.01.2022 This photo was taken exactly 2 years ago. Qaswa was still in its planning stage. We wanted a place filled with laughter of children. A happy madrasah. A space where children feel excited to come and learn about their Deen.... Our dream was to create a space where children develop a deep love for their religion. Alhamdulillah, our prayer for a place came through. A month after this photo was taken, we signed our lease. With the overwhelming support from the community, we have managed to transform the space into a House. Alhamdulillah... #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

02.01.2022 The Ultimate Dhikr In a recent talk at a youth event organised by Muslim Youth of Western Australia, I was asked about the best form of dhikr to work on our spi...rituality. First of all, I am not qualified to have an opinion on this. I will just relay of practices that have been passed down to me by my teachers. When I asked for Sheikh Abdul Latif al-Farfour al-Hasani of Damascus for wird (daily dhikr) for my daily practice, he said, "My son, have you memorised the Quran?" "Not yet, Sheikh," I answered. "Why havent you?" asked the sheikh. "It is not easy, sheikh," I replied. "My son, there is no dhikr greater than the Quran. If you havent memorised the Quran, then your dhikr should be memorising the Quran. Spend each day reading one page of the Quran and committing it to memory." Sheikh Hamza Yusuf said that unless we read one juz of the Quran daily, we should abandon every other form of litanies. We should come back to making the Quran the centre of our lives. If you are thinking of threading the path of spirituality, start with the Quran. Read it. Memorise it. Understand it. Sometimes we tend to shift our focus from what is most important to other things, while good, not as important. Sheikh Abdul Latif al-Farfour al-Hasani passed away in 2014 in Malaysia.

02.01.2022 It is important that we approach our Deen by reading the two revelations of God; the written revelation and the observed revelation. The Quran and the creation of God around us. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath

01.01.2022 The masjid is always the centre of a Muslim community. Today we took some of our students for a masjid tour at Ar-Rukun Mosque Rockingham. We spoke about the history and architecture of masjids and its significance to a Muslim community. We also discussed the rules of congregational prayer and the common issues faced when praying in a jamaah.... Our students got the chance to go to the mihrab and take a look at the mimbar up close. Thank you to the Ar-Rukun Mosque committee for welcoming us. After the tour we adjourned for a picnic at Shoalwater beach. Little did we realise that we are enjoying our last outing of the week as Perth is now under lock down due to Covid community transmission. This is our first case in 11 months. May Allah protect us and our community from any harm. #qaswafamily #towardsthemiddlepath
