22.01.2022 Yarning With Our Elders Project - Calling all Year 7 - 12 Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. One of our greatest gifts is our Elders’ incredible wealth of knowledge, wisdom, strength and experience. QATSIF in partnership with Australian Catholic University is inviting all Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 2021 secondary students to yarn with, learn from, and share the stories, wisdom and cultural heritage of our Elders. ... All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are going into Year 7 - 12 in a Queensland School in 2021 are invited to take part. Over the Christmas holidays, we are inviting students to yarn with an Elder and record one important aspect of their life. Some examples could be: What was it like growing up in their local community? Their Stolen Generations or Stolen Wages story. What is their advice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people? Important local traditional language words, their meaning and pronunciation. An important local traditional story, dance, technology or historical event. What lessons did they learn from their own Elders? Students are invited to share their Elder’s story using any appropriate media eg. video, voice recordings, essay, poetry, music, interviews etc. Preferably, presentations should be less than 10 minutes or 5000 words in length (or equivalent). ACU will assist with collating and preserving these important stories for future generations and offer prizes for outstanding entries. All entries will be recognised with a certificate. The best entry in the Junior, Middle and Senior Years sections will win and iPad and hopefully the opportunity to learn about Cultural Writing from a renowned Aboriginal author. Entries close: Friday February 12, 2021. Entry form available at: https://www.qatsif.org.au/yarning-with-our-elders or via the link below.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to the talented Sarah Higgins from Kilcoy State High School who received her QATSIF Creative Arts trophy for her powerful and thought-provoking work entitled "A Stones Throw". Sarah wrote, "I created this piece while exploring how cultural symbols can be manipulated to represent meaning to an audience. The symbol in this artwork is the Aboriginal mark of a meeting place. A Stones Throw demonstrates how the loss of Indigenous culture is not only caused by the ...wrongs of the past but also the lack of awareness in modern times. There were twenty-eight of the symbols placed around the area which represent the twenty eight language groups of Indigenous Australians. In the public environment each piece remained unlabelled and ephemeral due to the interaction of people. I chose this to open the question that if the audiences knew the meaning of the symbol they were destroying, would they have left it alone? Loss of Indigenous culture is a big, mostly unseen occurrence in Australia at this point in time. This art is not a fight to save culture, nor is it a cry for help. I intend for audience members to experience for a second their unknown contribution to the loss." QATSIF wishes Sarah all the best for her future and thanks her for her deadly entry in our competition. QATSIF's Creative Arts Competition will be open to all Year 7 to 12 Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the end of term 1, 2021.
