21.01.2022 A message from Queensland Building and Construction Commission - QBCC Commissioner Brett Bassett: NAIDOC week this year runs from 8-15 November 2020. As we look into this week, I would like us to take a moment to pause and acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we each gather, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and those emerging. It is important to recognise NAIDOC week, why? Because for over 65,000 years our First Nations people have h...ad custody of these lands, there is no doubt about that in my mind. We must, not just now, but always acknowledge and respect, the enduring legacy our Indigenous peoples have to the lands on which we gather. This year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. And I believe this from the bottom of my heart. There are ranges of NAIDOC events around the state - a number of which are online events also. Click here for more information - https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC National NAIDOC

13.01.2022 Close attention needed for corrosion protection of joist hangers and other connectors. The minimum level of corrosion resistance used by manufacturers of metal framing brackets is Z275 gsm. This level is appropriate for internal applications (within the building envelope) that are kept permanently dry only. This level is not appropriate for external weather-exposed applications subject to repeated wetting. Failure to utilise joist hangers and other connectors with the requ...ired levels of corrosion protection will lead to the early deterioration of these products, resulting in a decrease in structural capacity. In extreme circumstances, this could eventually contribute to the failure of a structure. The QBCC has investigated a number of balcony and deck collapses, some of which sadly resulted in death or serious injury. Please see our technical blog for further information, including background notes, corrosion zones, exposure conditions, minimum corrosion protection levels, and advice moving forward: https://qbcc.build/3kCl7Hm
