25.01.2022 Does this belong to you? Please remove and dispose of your waste responsibly. Yellow lidded recycling bins are only for accepted recyclable materials. Hazardous items such as gas bottles can be taken to a Community Recycling Centre or to the upcoming Household Chemical Cleanout on Saturday 10 October (1-4pm, Braidwood Saleyards or Collett Street Car Park in Queanbeyan). Other general waste should be taken to a transfer station or landfill.
24.01.2022 Here in the QPRC Comms team we are feeling a little envious that some areas of QPRC seem to have all the fun! Before Christmas our Natural Landscapes team hired an amphibious all-terrain vehicle (AATV) to help survey remote waterways. Biosecurity Officers were specifically searching for Gorse plants, one of our rare weeds that we are trying to contain and eradicate before it becomes established. The AATV allowed them to get access to some very remote locations. It successfull...y handled a diverse range of riparian environments including deep water, shallow water with low rocky outcrops, riffles and sandy beaches. The team was able to use rivers as roads, so to speak, to get to these hard to get to places. The ‘Gorsebusters’ project is funded by the regional Weeds Action Program to help find any Gorse plants that may have spread downstream from isolated infestations on the Shoalhaven and Endrick rivers. The surveys were successful in finding new infestations of Gorse along both rivers. If you want to know more about what our Biosecurity Officers do, or find advice about how to control a range of weeds, check out some of the videos on our YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist

23.01.2022 Hey Googonians, it's a great morning for a walk. While you are out enjoying some fresh air, and maybe grabbing a coffee at the shops, drop in to see us at the Googong Community Centre (Cnr Gorman Drive & McPhail Way) if you have any questions about the recycled water that will commence flowing through 'purple pipes' from 1 December 2020. We'll be here until 12 noon, Saturday 14 November. A comprehensive web page, including a range of fact sheets, is available at: www.qprc.nsw.gov.au/GoogongRecycledWater Googong township |. Googong Residents' Association Inc
23.01.2022 Don't forget, this Saturday is Household Chemical Cleanout day. If you've got any fluoro globes and tubes, gas bottles, household cleaners, batteries, paint, oils, garden chemicals, poisons and smoke detectors that you want to dispose of responsibly, drop them off on Saturday 10 October from 1-4pm. You can either go to the Braidwood Saleyards on Gillamatong Lane or to the Collett Street Car Park at the corner of Collett and Morisset Streets in Queanbeyan.
22.01.2022 Double Demerit Points will be in force from 12.00am Thursday 24 December and will be in place until 11.59pm Sunday 3 January 2021. They apply to speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, seatbelt and helmet wearing offences. Don't start 2021 the way 2020 has been going by risking your licence or hefty fines. If you are caught using a mobile phone that's not securely mounted to your vehicle or connected via Bluetooth during the Double Demerit period, it will cost you 10 points... and between $698 and $928 depending on your class of licence. Unrestricted drivers licences have 13 points. P platers and Learners have 7 and 4. That single phone call or text could cost you your licence....or worse! Also be warned that mobile speed cameras in NSW no longer have warning signage as you approach them. You could come across them anywhere without notice. We are expecting more traffic on our roads this summer as people stay closer to home because of COVID-19 so please stay safe, stay alert, be patient and drive to conditions.
22.01.2022 Hey Googonians, supplying recycled water through your purple pipes and taps starts on Tuesday 1 December. Are you ready? Have you read the booklet we mailed or have you had a look at the website and fact sheets? Are you confident you, and your family, know what you can and can't use recycled water for? The booklet and fact sheets are comprehensive, but here's a few extra Q&As we've had. Q - Can my kids use recycled water in their water bombs and water pistols in the backyard...? A - No, recycled water is not suitable for water play. They should use potable water from the laundry sink or a potable water tap instead. Q - I have a dog grooming business, can I use recycled water when washing client's dogs? A - We advise pet owners to discourage dogs from drinking recycled water or playing/swimming in ponds filled with recycled water, so no, it's not suitable for washing the dog. Mobile dog groomers should connect to a potable water tap rather than a purple recycled water tap. Q - The advice to wash the outside of fruit and veges is appreciated and is common sense that applies whether there's recycled water in use or not, but what about plants grown in the ground where there is recycled water used? A - Due to the guidelines and processes we follow, we are very confident that the water is fit for purpose and that minor exposure through occasionally forgetting to wash your fruit and veggies (or water absorbed by the food as it was growing) causes very low levels of health risk. Q - Can I disconnect from recycled water if I choose not to use it? A - You can't physically disconnect from recycled water, after all, it is plumbed to your toilet which we are sure you still need. You can always choose not to use recycled water in the garden or on the lawn, but we would hope that as you become more comfortable and familiar with recycled water that you will consider using the system as intended. The environmental benefits of recycled water are reduced when people don’t use recycled water as intended and a big part of living in Googong is about improving environmental outcomes. Let us know if you have any other questions about recycled water in Googong and we'll endeavour to answer them here. If you missed your copy of the booklet, private message us and we'll get one to you, or it is on the comprehensive web page, with a range of fact sheets for you to learn more, at: www.qprc.nsw.gov.au/GoogongRecycledWater Googong township | Googong Residents' Association Inc
22.01.2022 Update Monday 16 Nov, 8.30am - those of you who were directly affected no doubt already know, but we've been advised that services were returned on Saturday. We are also advised that the weekend repairs were a temporary fix only and that further work on a more permanent repair, resulting in a short outage, will need to be conducted in the near future. We will let you know if they advise us of when that work will occur. ********************* We’ve been advised that contrac...tors working on the installation of new traffic lights at the intersection of Uriarra Rd and Ross Rd have inadvertently hit a NBN line, meaning surrounding properties may be without NBN/internet for the timebeing. Telstra/NBN Co have been alerted and are coordinating repairs. At this stage we don't yet have an indication of timeframe. We will update this post when we know more. Apologies for the inconvenience.

22.01.2022 We were very pleased to host the Football Federation Australia (FFA) Women’s Talent Identification squad this week at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan. The talent identification camp was relocated here at short notice when it appeared that changing COVID-19 restrictions might have an impact at other potential venues. The camp was conducted under strict protocols established by FFA’s National Teams Unit. The young women at the camp were a mix of up and coming players from Australia...’s youth teams, as well as a host of established Westfield W-League performers. We wish them all the best in their quest for future national duties and hope they might one day follow in the footsteps of Queanbeyan's-own Karly Roestbakken. 21.01.2022 Mayor Tim Overall was joined today by Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie to oversee the turning on of recycled water for Googong. Unfortunately for our social media team there where no stereotypical giant rusty valves for them to struggle with for the cameras to commemorate the momentous event. The modern treatment plant itself is largely automated with a dedicated QPRC team to oversee its operations. From today - 1 December - all water provided through the ‘purple pipe...’ network in Googong should be treated as recycled water. The recycled water complies with the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling. It is treated to a very high standard and as advised by NSW Health Public Health Unit, there is a low risk of any negative health effects from approved uses. To find out more about what you can and can't use the recycled water for go to: www.qprc.nsw.gov.au/GoogongRecycledWater Googong township | Googong Residents' Association Inc

20.01.2022 Work is progressing well on the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Uriarra and Ross roads in Queanbeyan. Construction has now paused for the Christmas/New Year break. This morning (Wednesday 23 December) we have re-opened the Ross Road arm of the intersection. The traffic lights aren't operational yet and only temporary line marking is in place so please pay attention and take care when driving through this area over the coming weeks. The intersection will... operate as it did prior to the work commencing. Please stop and give way as per relevant signage. A 40km/h speed limit will apply throughout the break. Ross Road will close again on or about 12 January (weather permitting) for a few days to allow work in that section of the project to be completed. We expect the new traffic lights to be operational in February 2021.

20.01.2022 The installation of an adult change table at Braidwood's Ryrie Park toilet block is progressing well. Work on the female toilets has now been completed, with the toilets opening today (Friday). We expect that work on the male toilets will take another two weeks to complete, with two port-a-loos arriving on site today for community use. We have also increased signage in the area to advise park users of alternative public toilets at the Braidwood Recreation Ground, the Library... and next to the Visitor Information Centre. The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra was successful in securing grant funding for this project and is partnering with us to achieve a fantastic outcome for families most in need of this type of facility as they travel through our region and hopefully linger longer in Braidwood to find all of its hidden treasures. 13.01.2022 Our Tree Management Officer has been installing habitat boxes along the river corridor alongside Queanbeyan Golf Course. The large supply of food and water that is available in that area for wildlife results in an abundance of native inhabitants. We sought local expert advice as to which species to target in this area and to what materials and dimensions to construct the boxes. Queanbeyan Men's Shed kindly built the boxes and our staff painted them. Unlooped non-marine carpet... has been secured to the lids to discourage introduced bee species from invading the boxes. The boxes are installed using the non-invasive Habisure installation method so they have no impact on the tree. The boxes have been hung on the south to south-east side of the tree for the best aspect. The species we are targeting are: Barn Owl, Brushtail Possum, Wood duck, Kookaburra, Treecreeper, Eastern Rosella, Crimson Rosella, Ringtail possum, Red Rumped Parrot, Grey Shrike Thrush. 13.01.2022 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL, LARGE HAILSTONES and DAMAGING WINDS Weather Situation:... Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, large hailstones and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay, Orange, Canberra and Goulburn. Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Hunter district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED. 38.8 mm was observed at WOLLONGONG AWS in the 30 minutes to 9:05 am. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move your car under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. Unplug computers and appliances. Avoid using the phone during the storm. Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 12:05 pm.
13.01.2022 We are hearing reports of power out in parts of Queanbeyan East. Council isn’t responsible for power supply matters. Keep an eye on Essential Energy’s Facebook page or go to https://www.essentialenergy.com.au/outages-an/power-outages for updates if you are impacted by the outage.
11.01.2022 In preparation for the installation of Bungendore Tennis Club's fourth court at Mick Sherd Oval, Council staff are working with a contractor to remove some small trees on Friday 2 October. Two large trees nearby have been declining for several years. Despite best efforts to extend their life, they will also need to be removed in the near future. We'll keep you informed as to when that will happen. For safety reasons, please stay clear of the work site during the tree removals.
11.01.2022 Holiday plans involving Sydney may be up in the air for the immediate future, but the NSW South Coast is hotting up with usual increases in traffic. We are expecting to see even more traffic this year given restrictions that mean people stay closer to home. This time each year we work with Eurobodalla Shire Council, Shoalhaven City Council, ACT Policing, NSW Police Force, Transport for NSW and the ACT Government to promote messages of road safety on the busy Kings Highway. ...The annual Kings Highway Partnership campaign targets drivers travelling between Canberra and the South Coast, through Queanbeyan-Palerang. Please take care and remember that even a minor lapse in concentration or judgement can have tragic, catastrophic consequences. There may be delays on the Kings Highway due to the volume of traffic. Drive to the conditions, be patient, and take regular breaks. There are rest areas and Driver Reviver stations along the way. We've provided some of the cafes in Queanbeyan-Palerang with free travel cups to give away to encourage travellers to drop in for a cuppa and a break. Police will be targeting dangerous driving, including speeding and drink and drug driving. Make sure you return home safely from your trip to the coast with all of your demerit points intact and without a fine that could ruin your trip.
11.01.2022 Please don’t try this at home - but now that we have your attention. We’ve recently had a number of reports of bins that have only been half emptied. If the bins are too tightly packed, items might not come free when emptied into the truck. Please make sure that items are loosely placed into the bins.
10.01.2022 The toilet block at Ryrie Park, Braidwood will be closed for approximately four weeks from Monday 2 November to allow the installation of an adult change table. We need to do some structural changes and reconfigure the facilities slightly before the adult change table and accompanying hoist can be instal...led. The existing men's and women's disabled toilets will be combined into one large unisex disabled toilet. The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra was successful in securing grant funding for this project and is partnering with us to achieve a fantastic outcome for families most in need of this type of facility as they travel through our region and hopefully linger longer in Braidwood to find all of its hidden treasures. 10.01.2022 Work on the first mitigation measure in the Bungendore Flood Risk Management Plan was completed recently. We worked with contractors to clear non-native vegetation and reshape the area where Turallo and Halfway Creeks meet to provide more storage for flood waters and to improve flows. We planted more than 30,000 new plants including more than 29,000 shrubs and approximately 570 new native trees. The trees are a mix of Eucalypt, Casuarina, Black she-oak and Acacias. This is t...he first of three measures designed to reduce flooding of Turallo and Halfway Creeks. In the past, flooding of these creeks has resulted in economic and social impacts to residents and business owners in Bungendore. The other two measures will be implemented in the future and include upgrading the existing Turallo Terrace levee and construction of an overflow channel across Tarago Road.

07.01.2022 A number of streets in Braidwood are being resealed between 4 and 21 November, weather permitting. Residents of affected streets have been, or are being, letterbox dropped about the works. Residents are advised not to park on the street during this time to allow the work to be done. Drivers passing through the resealed streets are reminded to slow down and avoid sharp turns and heavy braking. The warmer weather is the best time for resealing because the bitumen remains soft f...or longer, allowing the stones to properly embed themselves. The work hours will be 6am to 6pm. The streets being resealed include: Araluen Street, Bombay Road, Clyde Street, Coghill Street, Coronation Avenue, Cowper Street, Duncan Street, Elrington Street, Garvey Street, Hassall Circuit, Keder Street, Lascelles Street, McKellar Street, Monkittee Street, Royds Lane, Ryrie Street, Sandholes Road, Victory Street, Wilson Street. 03.01.2022 Four large veteran elm trees along the boundary of the Old Stone House, near the intersection of Malbon and Molonglo Streets in Bungendore, will receive retrenchment pruning on Wednesday 21 October to extend their life. Retrenchment pruning is a phased form of crown reduction which is intended to emulate the natural process whereby the crown of a declining tree retains its overall biomechanical integrity by becoming smaller through the progressive shedding of small branches ...and the development of the lower crown (retrenchment). The process is intended to promote early crown stabilisation and reduce the risk of catastrophic structure failure by reducing the lever arm, while at the same time increasing the opportunity for dormant growth nodules to activate and produce a new lower-canopy tier. (Source: British Standards 3998. 2010. Tree work - recommendations). The work has been planned in consultation with the owners of the Old Stone House and the adjacent business, Cleanseeds. Residents are advised that retrenchment pruning will appear quite harsh, however it is in the best long-term interests of the trees.
