01.01.2022 We know that swans feature prominently in Irish folklore and it is little wonder that they have been artistically transferred to the worlds of literature and tr...aditional crafts. The Clann Lir/Children of Lir story is probably the best known swan narrative. Briefly, King Lir’s first wife Eva died and left him to rear four young children, Aodh being the eldest son, Fionnuala and the twin boys Fiachra and Conn. King Lir re-married quickly, taking as his partner his dead wife’s sister Aobh, and she was said to have magical powers. Aobh was consumed with jealousy over the children and began to plot their murder. She eventually turned the children into swans. A talented Irish needlewoman has represented the Children of Lir story on the attached old linen and lace handkerchief ‘Morning Light’. Swans too feature heavily in Yeats’ work, most notably in the poem/collection The Wild Swans at Coole (1917): ‘Upon the brimming water among the stones Are nine-and-fifty swans.’ The swan, a ‘brilliant creature’ (Yeats), holds a special place in Irish hearts and it represents grace, beauty, fidelity and peace. Hopefully the attached exquisite, crocheted swans, and a couple of Carrickmacross Lace pieces, one contemporary and one traditional, will in Yeats’ words ‘delight men’s eyes’. So too should the fine linen and lace Burato Italian piece, which dates from the Arts & Crafts period, depicting swans and the winged lions of Saint Mark the Evangelist, Patron Saint of Lawyers.
