10.01.2022 QCWA Darling Downs Division has a twist on this years float turning Japanese is for our country of study 2020. It’s on display at Grand Central Shopping Centre Toowoomba near Vapiano and Chong and Co Restaurants on the lower level on the Dent Street side.

10.01.2022 On this day in 1922, the first meeting of the Queensland Country Women's Association was held in Toowoomba’s Town Hall. The QCWA’s newly elected and founding Pr...esident, Mrs Ruth Fairfax, spoke of the great force for good such an organisation might become. Its objects, first and last, were to benefit the women in the country, particularly those out back. Showing particular support for the formation of the organisation was the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan, whose plan for the QCWA to establish districts within each shire in the state was unanimously adopted by those attending the meeting. The month before, Sir Nathan had attended and addressed the open conference that endorsed the organisation’s establishment. Sir Nathan was more than just first Patron and passive supporter. Whenever he travelled throughout rural areas in the State, he encouraged women to form a local branch of the organisation and supplied them with written information. He performed many stump-capping ceremonies for the QCWA symbolically placing a galvanized iron cap over one of the stumps upon which a new hostel or meeting room might rest. In June 1923, when Sir Nathan addressed a branch meeting in Charters Towers, he said: The Country Women’s Association is an organisation for cooperation for the country women to meet together and settle together what can be done by themselves, by their well wishers, by the Local Authorities and by the Governments both State and Federal, to improve the conditions under which they live to make life, if not easier, at any rate to contain a greater measure of healthy enjoyment. By 1928 there were 283 Branches and 13,000 members state-wide, helping to connect women across vast distances; offering friendship, and support to those in regional communities. 09.01.2022 As discussed at a couple of Division Meetings we are commencing sewing afternoons at the Centre. Sue Kenny & I will be co-ordinating the afternoons so please feel free to contact either one of us via the Darling Downs Division email address or my phone number. We decided we needed a name and Sew Together is what we hope to become where members and friends can come in and do their own sewing, talk about patterns, fabrics & techniques and help those who may need a bit of gu...idance. We don’t want to do structured lessons at this stage but be more about helping ladies get started and answering their questions. You don’t need to be a QCWA member so bring a sewing friend. Whilst Sue & I do make clothes it doesn’t mean that is the only thing we will do cushions, bed linen, bags, hats - if you can sew it we will give it a go. 06.01.2022 We have been busy back cooking in the kitchen with the QCWA Country Kitchens HON workshops over the past few weeks ,it been a pleasure to have 8 ladies through the St Vincent de Paul EALD program from Darling Heights School. QCWA Members from Toowoomba, Oakey, Highfields and Middle Ridge Branches volunteered over the past 3 weeks and enjoyed meeting the participants from Malaysia,Phillipines,Sudan and Iraq. Also a big Thank you to Gita from St V de Paul and Ricky from Darling Heights School.

03.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: QCWA embraces new virtual world Invitation for women to join first online branch, launching Tuesday 2 March The Queensland Country Women’s... Association (QCWA) is starting its first completely online branch in 2021, acknowledging the growing need for women to meet, socialise and contribute to their communities in a virtual way. Whilst some of the association’s physical branches have met virtually during the pandemic, the Virtual Branch is a new concept altogether. QCWA State President Christine King said the Virtual Branch was for women who, for various reasons, were unable to attend a local branch, but still wanted to support QCWA. We know women have caring responsibilities, work commitments, physical barriers and other reasons why they can’t get to branch meetings. Maybe they’re just shy! she said. Our brand-new Virtual Branch gives them a way to participate. As we come out of COVID-19 and start a new year, many women are inspired to assist their communities, and this is exactly what the QCWA exists for. The Virtual Branch might not be able to do all the things we are traditionally known for, but there is still so much they can do, like contribute to our social, agribusiness and environmental projects, not to mention provide each other with friendship and support. A Virtual Branch is already successfully operating for the Country Women’s Association of New South Wales. In Queensland, it will initially be trialled in the Southern Region stretching from Greater Brisbane and border areas to the Darling Downs and far-western Warrego areas. Any women over 18, from all walks of life, are welcome to attend the first group meetings. A mentor will guide the group, helping it to build slowly and become a strong team. The Association will strive for a Virtual Branch in all regions: Southern, Central and Northern. THE FIRST MEETING IS ON TUESDAY, 2 MARCH 2021. Then every first Tuesday of the month. 03.01.2022 CARNIVAL OF FLOWERS SET TO BLOOM Tomorrow marks the start of the 71st Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. The traditional Floral Parade has morphed into a s...tatic display of parade floats spread throughout Grand Central over the two weeks. Grand Central Marketing Manager Julie Thompson says having the float display available for a fortnight means people can safely view them whenever it suits them. We’re transforming the centre into a floral feast for the eyes and we’re lucky enough to have six local community groups and businesses still doing their floats. The designs of the floats are still top-secret. The floats are looking really great we’re really excited to have them in the centre, Ms Thompson says. QCWA Darling Downs Division President Carol Jackson says it’s important to keep the spirit of the carnival going. It won’t be quite the same as going down the streets amongst the people and getting the cheers and the claps, but I think it’s a drawcard for people coming into the area to be able to come and have a look at the floats, Ms Jackson says. There will also be a pre-recorded Itty-Bitty virtual parade live streamed at 3:00 pm tomorrow to mark the start of the carnival. : Ellie Jolley, ABC News

01.01.2022 Last Saturday QCWA Middle Ridge Branch held a Country Kitchen workshop with a few young ladies who attend the youth group at Hume Ridge Church. The three girls who are from Namibia were very interested in learning about the Country Kitchen program and making healthy cooking choices. Recipes they used were Curried Chick Pea Salad, Pumpkin and Palenta Muffins finishing with a treat of Sticky Date and Pear Muffins. ...
