21.01.2022 Happy Wednesday... and Good Morning Alison Alexander (who has decided that it is time for us to start thinking about Christmas!!) 72 days until Christmas! (Ins...ert image of Caroline lying down with a Bex!!) Are you a person who cleverly picks up gifts throughout the year for family and friends or like most people leave it to the last few weeks to make your gift purchases? The latter is definitely me! I think in my case it is because I live near retail outlets and can easily dash around the shops over a short period of time at the last minute!! You may have become aware of a campaign in 2019 to buy from rural and regional Australia, not just our own city and I certainly endorse this idea. It is easy enough to order online and the range to choose from is overwhelming the hardest part is making a choice!! Buyfromthebush has a wide range from small businesses in mostly eastern seaboard states but all outside the capital cities. A favourite place for me for Christmas shopping is a visit to Bush Christmas Exhibition in Toowoomba. This annual event is very well organized by Liz McClymont and this year is being made easier with online shopping as well as in person. The event runs from 25 November to 4 December at the Masonic Centre, 58 Neil Street, Toowoomba and has given many country artisans the opportunity to sell their wares to a wider audience. Whether you are buying for children, wanting some homewares, looking for garden ornaments or just needing a dose of retail therapy, a trip up the range with a few friends is a good day out. Fortunately for those people who are unable to make a visit buying online is now available. For more information go to www.bushchristmas.com When you hear about the QCWA, country Queensland immediately comes to mind but did you know that the largest branch in the state is in the Brisbane suburb of Moggill? The work covered by the women of this branch includes making birthing kits for women in third world countries near Australia, making emergency kits and toys for women and children who experience domestic violence, making items for women in aged care homes and so much more. They also make excellent scones! Whether it is in times of fires, drought, floods or other disasters, the QCWA is a constant presence helping communities get back on their feet and to assist with raising funds the QCWA Moggill Branch is holding a Christmas Stall at Kenmore Village on Saturday 14 November. All the items on sale have been handmade and include beautifully sewn Christmas table and tree decorations, children’s gifts, exquisite quilts and countless more items. Always quick to sell out are the popular Pantry Chooks hand sewn little chooks in colourful fabrics stuffed with herbs and spices to deter moths in the pantry perfect stocking fillers. The stall opens at 8am. Have you done any Christmas cooking yet? The recipe below is my favourite fruit mince and if you make it in the next couple of weeks it will be beautifully matured in time for your fruit mince pies. Of course, if you don’t get around to making this recipe, three girls skipping will have their wonderful pies for sale, thank goodness! (Insert image of Caroline rolling her eyes!! Clearly AA is far more organised than us!!). Pear and Ginger Fruit Mince Ingredients: 1kg firm pears 500g Granny Smith apples 250g caster sugar 250g brown sugar 375g sultanas 200g currants cup finely chopped glace ginger cup lemon juice finely grated zest of 2 oranges 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg teaspoon ground cloves cup Grand Marnier or Cointreau Method: 1. Peel the pears and apples, cut into quarters, remove the core and cut into small dice. Place all ingredients in a large saucepan except the liqueur and cover with a lid. 2. Slowly bring mixture to the boil and then reduce to a simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove lid and cook for a further 15 minutes to evaporate some of the liquid. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the liqueur and stir through. 3. Spoon mixture into sterilized jars and seal. Store in a cool, dark, dry place for at least 1 month before using Until next week... AA

15.01.2022 Ekka favourite a major fundraiser. The Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) has been running the tea rooms at the Ekka for more than 45 years selling s...cones and jam, tea, coffee, and sandwiches. Annually its members bake more than 10,000 scones on-site to feed hungry showgoers. QCWA president Christine King said the service was a sense of great pride for the association and a big fundraiser. "More than 450 shifts are filled with volunteers each year, and this [Ekka cancellation] is a huge disappointment to everyone involved as the volunteers connect the city to the country," she said. "You get to know the exhibitors over the years, and many of our volunteers are country people who retire to the city. "The Ekka is also a major fundraiser for us. We make funds there to create different projects in the community." Volunteers had already made more than 500 jars of pickles, jams, and chutneys which were normally sold and used at the refreshment rooms. More than 60 kilograms of berries had already been donated to the QCWA for use in the jams. The group also knit, crochet, and sell tea cosies, tea towels, and other handmade goods at the stall. Ms King said the group were looking at ways for people to still purchase the goods as part of their fundraising. "Once it's [the pandemic] declared over we have plans of getting people back together and to get our fundraising going again in whatever capacity we can," she said. See more

10.01.2022 Today was our last day of conference. Show and tell by Heather and Maria. Therese gave us a quizz about Japan and I think we all have to go home and study now.... Two ladies got to try to prune and wire a bonsai tree under close supervision by Tony and the rest of us. We were very jealous when they got to take the plant home. Good luck with the bonsai ladies. We had a lovely group dancing for us and showing us how to make an origami flower and also write "Love" in Japanese. Now Robin and I are in Toowoomba hoping that we can get home tomorrow. There's been a lot of rain out west. See more
