22.01.2022 Let's learn a little more about Georgetown and Penang. Fort Cornwallis: Fort Cornwallis is one of the most famous sights in Penang and dates from the 18th centu...ry. It was built by the British East India Company under the direction of Sir Francis Light who was the founder of Penang and was designed to defend the city in case of an attack from the water. Thankfully it never was used in this role. The fort is still in good condition and you can see a famous statue of Francis Light that stands at the entrance to the fort as well as a selection of original cannons. Kek Lok Si Temple: This temple is famed for being one of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. Many Buddhist devotees consider this to be an important pilgrimage site Tanjung Bungah: This quiet part of Penang is home to the floating Mosque and situated between between Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi. Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque was built on stilts over the water. At low tide you can walk directly underneath the mosque and check out this amazing feat of engineering which was also the first of its kind in Malaysia. Spice Gardens: One of the highlights of Penang, is the Tropical Spice Garden located on Jalan Teluk Bahang. The garden is an ode to all the gorgeous herbs and spices that are indigenous to this part of the world and sits on the site of what used to be a rubber plantation. It has an amazing selection of Malay flora and fauna. You are able to take a cookery class in the gardens and learn how to use these herbs and spices in classical Malaysian dishes. Keep on walking. #happierhealthier #cwastgeorge #qcwa See more
22.01.2022 It was wonderful to be back at ‘Have a Yarn’ this morning! And as usual, a spectacular body of work has been made by these women, with some highlights captured here. Fran has made a beautiful crocheted boho sleeveless cardigan - take a look at the detail! Yvonne has been knitting for The Lions Clubs ‘Kids off the Street’ but took some time out to showcase some more of Fran’s work. Laureen too has been busy knitting these glorious blankets for ‘Kids off the Street’. Laureen... shared that it takes around a month to make one of these and about $50 in acrylic yarn. If you have any spare yarn that you’d like to donate, please get in touch! There were hooks a’plenty in action today and Michelle (who was joining the group for the first time) was making some washcloths for babies- wonderful idea! Pat was showing off her talents with finger knitting & Melinda was putting together her lovely little knitted Christmas stockings. Do you like what you see? Many of these and more will be available to purchase at our stall at Boyne Plaza tomorrow, the 18th of November. #crochet #bohostyle #knitting #fingerknitting #crafts #shoulderbag #blanket #yarn #haveayarn #christmasstockings #lionsclub #kidsoffthestreet @qcwa1922 #tannumsands #4680 See more

14.01.2022 Remember to start logging your kms as of today. To start us off here are some facts about Malaysia: 1. Capital Kuala Lumpur; 2. The country declared independence from the British Empire in 1957; 3. Ethnic Malays account for roughly half of Malaysia's estimated 31 million people. Other significant groups include Chinese, Indians and various indigenous peoples;... 4. Malaysia has a unique rotating monarchy system, in which nine ethnic Malay state rulers take turns as king for five-year terms; 5. The country is made up of two main landmasses, Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. They are separated by the South China Sea; 6. The Sarawak Cave Chamber is the largest known cave chamber in the world. It is located in Gunung Mulu National Park, on the island of Borneo; 7. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur were the world's tallest buildings until 2004. Standing 451.9 meters (1,483 feet) high with 88 stories, the structures remain as the world's tallest twin buildings; 8. Shoe designer Jimmy Choo was born in Penang, Malaysia. Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of the British Empire in 2003; 9. What may be the world's richest unrecovered treasure trove from a sunken ship rests somewhere on the sea floor in Malaysia's Strait of Malacca. The Portuguese ship Flora de la mar (Flower of the sea) was returning home loaded with what was then the largest treasure collected by the Portuguese navy when it sank in December 1511. Today, modern-day pirates are known to patrol the Malaysian strait; 10. The national currency is the ringgit, which is a dated term for "jagged" in the Malay language and refers to the serrated edges of silver Spanish dollars widely used in the 16th and 17th centuries; 11. Four UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites are found in Malaysia: Gunung Mulu National Park, Kinabalu Park, the historic cities of Melaka and George Town, and the archaeological heritage site of the Lenggong Valley. #happierhealthier #cwastgeorge #qcwa See more

03.01.2022 : Every week for six months you can come and collaborate with A Country Arts Practice in the Country Women meet Art: Artist in Residence Community Project - an Artist in Residence ! The purpose of the project is to bring a new concept to the community, where through collaboration, new works are created, QCWA historic contributions are recognised and community assets become revitalised and acti...vated through the arts. Says President Natalia Muszkat. This project will be closely linked to the beautification of the Hall’s gardens in preparation for the Branch’s 50th anniversary in 2021. Over 24 weeks, I will create a series of ephemeral environmental art installations and permanent garden art pieces (to name a few) utilising (where possible) organic material that is specifically from the site. Every Wednesday for the duration of the residency, community members are invited to collaborate with me on site at the hall. In addition, Melissa will lead a series of community workshops where community members will be able to gain new skills and experiences in the arts. The gold coin donation workshops will be held on weekends and offer participants the opportunity to make seedling boxes, botanical paper, cyanotype prints, woven work, bookbinding and eco printing to name a few. Our first week will be making handmade paper seedling boxes with thanks to Rip Curl Gladstone for donating paper bags. And then some eco dyeing (images in this post) for random weaving.
