25.01.2022 Any followers in NSW?

24.01.2022 Thanks to all the educators who joined our Term Three Network Meeting yesterday at the Boondall Wetlands and Environment Centre. We had a lovely morning walking through the wetlands, learning about the flora and fauna of the area. During our walk along the Billai Dhagun Track we saw several totems, depicting various aspects of Indigenous culture. Then we enjoyed our morning tea under the gum trees in the picnic area. Lyndal inspired us all to think about our arts practice an...d consider ways to make them more sustainable. We will be sharing many of Lyndals ideas through our Website and Facebook soon. Megan Forward showed us her latest book, Scribbly Gum Secrets, which is a beautifully illustrated story about nature discovery in your neighbourhood. www.qecsn.org.au

14.01.2022 We are excited! One month to go til the Aussie Backyard Bird Count! Australia’s largest annual bird count event is back for its 7th year! Held between 192...5 October, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard, no matter where your backyard happens to be. You can count in a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town. In fact, you don't even have to leave home, making it the ultimate Covid-safe activity! To take part all you need is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space. Not only will you be contributing to BirdLife Australia's knowledge of Aussie birds, but there are also some great prizes on offer. Head over to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count website and register as a Counter today! https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ The yearly bird count gives us a snapshot in time of bird numbers around the nation so if you’ve participated before and are raring to go remember the app doesn’t kick in until the count begins on 19 October (one month to go!). #AussieBirdCount See more

09.01.2022 Great to see so many PD opportunities in Education for Sustainability. Correction, it’s Wednesday 23rd September.

08.01.2022 As well as being a teacher, I'm also an avid home gardener and I often talk to the children in my class about what I've been doing in my garden. Gardeners gener...ally know about the benefits of banana skins in their compost or just cut up and sprinkled around the bottom of your plants. There is also another way of extracting that beautiful potassium from banana skins, by making 'banana water'. Because we have so many children bringing in bananas for morning tea, we decided to start a little project in my kindy room (children aged 4 - 5 years). We now make our own banana water and sell it for $1, although in the long term, we will give it away to families or use it on our kindy garden. Children from other classes are also donating their banana skins; sometimes we get about 30 skins a day! My class designed the labels and we use recycled milk bottles. So, it's easy. Give it a go! Cut up banana peels and place in large bowl, cover with water. 1/3 peels to 2/3 water but no need to be too fussy. Leave for 2 or 3 days, then strain through a colander into the bottles. Attach labels and you're done. A perfect natural fertiliser for all plants - veges, flowers, indoor plants too. Use straight from the bottle. The bottles may swell a bit due to fermentation, so we just 'burp' the bottles by taking the lid off for a few seconds. We also attach some notes about the benefits of banana in the garden. You can obtain this online. And, the left over, slushy banana skins can go into your compost. Have fun!
