14.01.2022 CONGRATS AND THANKS TO LIONEL WILLIAMSON The organisers of Queensland’s largest schoolboy rugby league carnival have thanked Lionel Williamson for his decades of service after the Kangaroos legend announced he would step down from the management committee. Williamson advised Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, which organises the Confraternity Carnival, that he would end his 21-year stint on the committee including his role as Vice-President. Williamson wi...ll continue to attend Confraternity Carnivals with his beloved St Augustine’s College from Cairns, including next year’s event at Iona College and the 2022 Carnival in Mackay. He has attended each Confraternity Carnival since 1986 and plays a key role in speaking to participants each year about the importance of Spirit of the Confraternity based on values including respect, sportsmanship and honesty that have underpinned the event for 40 years. We can’t thank Lionel Williamson enough for his work on the committee over many years and we’re rapt that he will continue to be at our Carnivals delivering our message of the Spirit of the Confraternity, QISSRL President Peter Elmore said. When asked about the importance of the carnival in the development of his players, Lionel would say that ‘you take away boys and bring back men’. Lionel continues to be passionate about rugby league and the positive impacts it has on so many young people. He is a wonderful ambassador for the game. Williamson was an outstanding player during a long career that included club stints in Sydney and his hometown of Innisfail. He represented Queensland and New South Wales during those periods while also becoming a regular for the Australian team. He scored tries in two winning World Cup finals teams, featuring alongside players of the calibre of Arthur Beetson, Johnny Raper, Ron Coote, Bob Fulton and Graeme Langlands. Williamson was named in Newtown’s team of the century. However, he has always been at home mentoring younger players, developing their skills on and off the field. Williamson’s long tenure with St Augustine’s included the 1993 Carnival which the College hosted and won the Confraternity Shield. See more

05.01.2022 CONFRATERNITY CARNIVAL CANCELLED FOR 2020 The 2020 Confraternity Carnival has been cancelled because of uncertainty surround the COVID-19 crisis. The Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League made the difficult decision, which marks the first time that the famous Carnival has not been played since its inaugural year in 1980.... This was a particularly difficult decision but, with the sensible measures that governments have put in place and the uncertainty of the months ahead, we were left with no choice, the QISSRL committee said. We desperately wanted to play this year, mindful of how much this Carnival means to its players and schools, particularly for those players in Year 12. Confraternity Carnival will be back in 2021. In the meantime, we send out best wishes to all Year 12 students for their final year of school. The committee announced that Iona College, which was preparing to host this year’s Carnival from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July, would now host next year’s event. Mackay, which was scheduled to host next year’s event, will host the 2022 Carnival. The Confraternity Carnival began in 1980 with six teams before growing to become one of the best-known schoolboy rugby league nurseries in the country. The 40th Confraternity Carnival in Bundaberg last year drew more than 1000 boys from 48 schools across Queensland. QISSRL president and Padua College Rector Peter Elmore said the Confraternity Carnival brought together teams united by a Christian background. The Carnival has grown in size since it was first contested in 1980 but it remains an event in which sportsmanship, respect and fellowship are most highly valued, Mr Elmore said. We are proud of the many Catholic schools and players who have contested this event over the decades. While there is a great list of former Confro players who have gone on to the game’s highest levels, we’re just as proud of the manner in which the Carnival is played. Confraternity Carnival graduates over the years have included Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott and Cameron Munster among dozens of other Maroons and Kangaroo stars. We are also pleased to announce that the QISSN Carnival will also be in Brisbane in 2021 at the Nissan Netball Arena. Both organisations hope to continue to work with their new major sponsor Central Queensland University as well as each associations’ existing sponsors in 2021.

02.01.2022 The Confraternity family sends our deepest sympathies to the family of one of our brightest former students who passed away suddenly last weekend. Mitch Cronin, a former Clairvaux Mackillop College student who excelled at rugby league, died suddenly after a suspected medical condition, leaving his family and many friends in mourning. Mitch would have celebrated his 28th birthday this Saturday. He was the captain of the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, where he had moved after being a s...quad member with the Brisbane Broncos and Canberra Raiders. QISSRL president, Padua College Rector and former Clairvaux MacKillop deputy principal Peter Elmore described Mitch as an outstanding rugby league player but more significantly ... an outstanding man. Mitch is so well respected by all who have known or met him. His passing will be felt deeply by many,'' Mr Elmore said. Clairvaux MacKillop College principal Brian Eastaughffe said Mitch would be remembered as a gentle, caring, smiling and compassionate young man who had earned the respect of peers and staff members alike during his five years at the Upper Mt Gravatt Catholic co-educational school. It is difficult for the community of Clairvaux MacKillop College to comprehend that Mitch who was such a positive contributor to the College community is now in the gentle and loving embrace of our God,'' Mr Eastaughffe said. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mitch’s parents Chris and Andrea and his siblings Ben and Amy.'' Mitch graduated with Clairvaux MacKillop College’s senior class of 2009. His all-round sporting prowess earned him junior sportsperson of the year honours in (2007) and senior sportsperson in 2008-2009, but he was destined for the rugby league stage. A report on the 2008 Confraternity Shield which features the cream of Queensland schoolboy talent described him as one of the Carnival’s future stars. A Queensland Residents representative, Mitch played 108 Intrust Super Cup games with Wynnum and Souths-Logan after being part of both the Canberra Raiders and Brisbane Broncos NRL squads. He turned out for the Raiders in the Auckland Nines before his rugby league path eventually led him to another ''Green Machine'' on Brisbane's bayside where he became a favourite among teammates, coaches and Seagulls fans. He skippered Wynnum Manly in last year's grand final loss to Burleigh and was again set to lead the Seagulls to go one better this season when the competition was shut down after one match due to COVID-19.
