15.01.2022 In the words of two of the QIWRN members, Sam Lowdown and Norma Owens, from the Laura Rangers on Cape York. "Our experience as 18-year-old full time Indigenous female rangers has been good, with many new and exciting things along our journey. One of our favourite jobs is doing hands on mechanical work with Ted. He teaches us a lot of stuff, from quad work to car repairs. Quad skills are important, as they are used to access rock art. Rock art is important because paintings a...nd engravings give Indigenous people our identity. The Laura Rangers also record the rock art in case of any fading or collapsed overhangs, and to show future generations. We recently conducted a post-mortem on a pig with the Top Watch Biosecurity team and have been tasked with looking for any sign of African swine fever. For the past decade, the Laura Rangers have been measuring sediment and nutrients coming downstream into the Laura River using barometric stage recorders. As young Indigenous female rangers, we are very proud of ourselves, our culture and our people. We enjoy helping the community out whenever help is needed and learning more about our country." #QIWRN #countryneedspeople #ILSR #indigenousrangers #womenrangers #capeyork #wwfamily
