21.01.2022 Graziers, do you know what your Green Date is? The Green Date is a helpful management tool. Put simply, it's the date you can expect to receive 50mm of rainfall within 3 consecutive days, in 7 out of 10 years, or most years. For many pastures across northern Australia, this is the amount of rain needed to start pasture growth for the season. In this series of 5 short videos, climatologist Dr Chelsea Jarvis discusses different aspects of the Green Date and how using this tool ...can help in understanding rainfall and likely pasture response nacp.org.au/resources/videos. The Northern Australia Climate Program is helping the grazing industry better manage drought and climate risks and is part of the Drought and Climate Adaptation Program. 14.01.2022 Climate Mate Paul Webb helped grazier Darren Marshall with some tough business decisions in the face of the ongoing drought. The information Paul shared was really beneficial for me to make decisions as to where to move the cattle and when. Together we looked at the data on rain and pasture growth predictability. Based on that I moved the cattle to a different property with a better outlook. It’s meant that a few months on, things are back on track and look really good. Cli...mate Mates ‘translate’ the best available climate information to a local context, and make it available to farmers when they need to make decisions. 14.01.2022 Happy harvesters Our cocoa research team are pretty pleased with themselves. They’ve just harvested up to 20 tonnes per hectare of cocoa podsthat’s equivalent to about 2 tonnes per hectare of dried bean! Two tonnes per hectare of dried bean or 70% chocolate equivalentnot bad for trees only 2.5 years in the ground. This is well above international cocoa yields and an excellent result for our research supporting tropical Queensland’s emerging cocoa industry and funded b...y Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. The team are keen to crack the 4 t/ha barrier soon! What does this mean for you? Higher quality and better tasting cocoa, and more of it, straight from the bean to the bar.

12.01.2022 Bryce Camm | Chief Executive Officer | Camm Agricultural Group | Bowenville Queensland’s agricultural industry continues to lead innovation for greater efficiencies and to meet consumer demands. I’m a 4th generation cattle producer. We’re one of Queensland’s largest family-run producers. We operate at 9 sites throughout Queensland, with beef cattle properties in both North and Central Queensland and a feedlot outside Dalby on the Darling Downs.... Innovation is something that has allowed our company to take what I call ‘giant leaps forward’ and achieve cost efficiencies in our production systems and maintain margins. The types of AgTech we’re investing in on our properties includes the conversion to solar energy to pump all our surface and bore water, and GPS technologies in our tractors, headers and sprayers to minimise our inputs, such as fertilisers and chemicals. At the feedlot, we’ve invested heavily in connectivity, ensuring we have high speed wireless broadband from Dalby. Over the horizon I can see innovations coming in animal health monitoring, feeding efficiencies through the use of automated bunks, drones for mustering and microwave for grain processing, rather than steam flaking. #QldAgTech #techtuesday

10.01.2022 Are you a farmer or agribusiness worker who needs to travel across the Queensland-NSW border? If you are a farmer or agribusiness worker who is a resident of Queensland or New South Wales, check if you are eligible for a class exemption prior to applying as a specialist or essential worker. If you meet the criteria for the class exemption, you do not have to apply for a specialist or essential worker endorsement. The class exemption may save you time.... 10.01.2022 Stuart Armitage | Owner and grower 'Wamara Farming’ | Winner of Peter Kenny Medal at Queensland Agriculture Awards It's so good seeing the younger generation keen to work hard and smart to ensure their farming businesses are sustainable and profitable for the future. These young farmers are passionate about their industries, and will be stepping up into ag leadership positions. My work has seen me meet and make enduring friendships with people I’ve met from many different... walks of life. It’s also given me the chance to assist Mary O’Brien with Are you bogged mate? which has been really rewarding. By helping her further her cause, she’s able to work full-time speaking and assisting with rural depression and suicide. Queensland’s agriculture industry has a great future because of its ability to produce some of the best and sustainably produced food and fibre in the world. There are some very inspiring technological advances happening in our ag industries and I would encourage young people to consider a career in this sphere and play a part in advancing Queensland agriculture to the next exciting level. 09.01.2022 Julia Wheway | Agriculture workforce officer | Bowen Gumlu Growers Association. I hate to admit it, but I have the worst reputation amongst my friends and family for not being able to grow a single thing and can even kill a cactus! I would fail miserably at being self-sufficient, but I guess that’s why we need our farmers! I spent over 25 years in the education and training industry both overseas and in Australia, working with various industries and businesses to assist... them with training and workforce development. I now enjoy working on the other side, within the agriculture industry, where I use my skills and knowledge of the training and employment sector to help the industry connect with potential employees and training opportunities. I love being able to take the pressure off a grower who calls me feeling stressed about a situation. Being able to offer advice, find solutions and raise a smile is the most rewarding part of the job for me. I’m really proud to have become a person that industry can rely upon and trust to get balanced and constructive advice, whatever the situation. We’ve endured many natural disasters in our region and the current pandemic is just another opportunity for me to step in where I can to help the industry get through and tackle whatever comes our way. **Julia is a part of the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Networkknown as QAWN. She is here to assist any business regardless of commodity, in any location, with advice and guidance on workforce planning, attraction, recruitment and skilling. From 11.59pm 16 November 2020, specific parts of South Australia, including Adelaide, are now declared COVID-19 hotspots. A person who has been in a COVID-19 hotspot within the last 14 days is not permitted to enter Queensland. However, the following exceptions apply if you:... arrived into Queensland by air and you transferred directly to another flight to leave Queensland and didn’t leave the airport or remain in quarantine until your flight out of Queensland transited through a COVID-19 hotspot hotspot area by road using private transport stopping only for essential fuel, supplies and managing driver fatigue, wore a mask when stopping and did not stay overnight in a hotspot (or travelled to an airport and directly transited). You can also be exempted as a specialist or essential worker under the Border Restrictions Direction https://www.business.qld.gov.au//border-restrictions-agric You should allow at least 7 working days for your application for endorsement to be assessed. After being notified of the outcome, apply for an electronic border pass (allowing a further 3 days). https://www.qld.gov.au/border-pass If you have been in a South Australian hotspot at any point from Monday 9 November but arrived before 11.59pm AEST on Monday 16 November, you should get tested even if you have no symptoms. You should also self-quarantine until 14 days have passed since you left the South Australian hotspot. 08.01.2022 EMBRACING THOSE IMPERFECTIONS Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. About 37,000 tonnes of bananas are discarded on farm each yearthat’s about $26.9 million of produce! We’re working on reducing food loss and waste in Queensland, with the Small to Medium Enterprise Solutions project helping enterprises develop new products from current waste streams. One such outcome is the Banana Feeds Australia equine scoping study, which seeks to provide a better understanding of the biological active compounds in dried banana crumble (made from banana waste) to prevent equine gastric ulcer syndrome in horses https://www.bananafeedsaustralia.com/

06.01.2022 Near infra-red cameras could be the crystal ball our Aussie lemon growers need to identify what fruit can survive the cold transport temperatures required for exporting. Our researchers have discovered hyperspectral imaging can detect and predict chilling injury in lemons before it is visible to the human eye. This technology can sort fruit into domestic and export categories, which = less food waste + good quality Aussie lemons for everyone to enjoy! ... #AgTechmonth #QldAgTech

05.01.2022 For Maree and Steve from Bowen Backpackers, 2020 has been a baptism of fire. They took the reins of the business two days before Queensland went into lockdown in April. Bowen Backpackers is a vital part of the agriculture value chain, housing seasonal workers who are required to plant, pick and pack the harvest in one of Australia’s major production areas for tomatoes, capsicums, mangoes and many other fruit and vegetables. Maree and Steve are just one of the hundreds of ac...commodation providers across the state who have worked hard to make their hostels COVID-safe, including supporting backpackers far from home and locked down without jobs. They love their new business though, and their town. Bowen is so friendly, everything is in walking distance, we have gorgeous beaches, beautiful breezes and plenty of jobs. It’s paradise. The winter harvest is drawing to a close, but Bowen Backpackers is ramping up to host the summer mango harvest workers, with plenty of rooms available for Queenslanders wanting a summer sea change. Come to Bowen and work on our farms. There’s comfy accommodation, transport to work and the beach, and shops are right on the doorstep. Visit qld.gov.au/pickqld to learn more. #pickqld

01.01.2022 Meet #pickqld pioneer Shaun from the Gold Coast. Shaun has answered the call from our farmers and has made his way to the wonderful Whitsundays to join the 2020 mango harvest. Shaun has a bunch of great experience in the mining and landscaping sector, but wasn’t having any luck finding work. ... Down home there’s 100 applicants for one job and you don’t even hear back to an application. A couple of weeks ago, he saw our #pickqld post and clicked to learn more about harvest trail jobs (https://jobsearch.gov.au/harvest/search). Now he’s in beautiful Bowen enjoying the laidback vibe, great accommodation just footsteps from the beach, and bus transport direct to farms. He’s even encouraged his 20 year old son and his two mates to join him for a couple of months! My wife is all on-board with it. She’s back home with our daughters and is happy my son and I have work. Plus, we can check out Bowen, Airlie Beach and other areas of the Whitsundays while we’re here.
