24.01.2022 Queensland has 2 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) today. The two cases are in hotel quarantine are returning from overseas.

24.01.2022 Today is Restart a Heart Day.! Learning the simple skill of CPR and using a defibrillator could help you save a life! Clinical Director Tony Hucker takes us through how easy it is to do these two steps!

24.01.2022 Some breaking great News on border restrictions.

24.01.2022 This is your quarterly reminder that school zones return tomorrow! This may result in extra traffic on the roads, so give yourself additional time and avoid rushing your journey. Traffic dangers will be at the back of kid’s minds on an exciting first day back, so please remain alert and aware as you drive around a school zone. Is your child walking or cycling to school tomorrow? Refresh their memory on key points such as:... Never cross the road in front or behind a bus. Enter the road at designated crossings when appropriate. Always keep an eye out for mates and siblings. Buckle up any protective gear securely. See more

23.01.2022 Would you know what to do if a loved one collapsed in front of you? Our very own Clinical Director Tony Hucker will be bringing live CPR demonstrations right here throughout the day as we encourage the community to remember three simple steps - Call. Push. Shock. 10am - Tune in as Tony conducts CPR basics on an adult patient and shows how easy an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is to use.... 12pm Tune in as Tony discusses CPR for an infant patient.

21.01.2022 "Team QAS" Participants = 75 Funds Raised = nearly $9000 Distance Walked = close to 7000 kms Shining the light on ending domestic and family violence = Priceless... A huge thank you to those throughout the state that contributed to the Australia's CEO Challenge "Darkness to Daylight" over the last month, in which a phenomenal amount of funds were raised to bring much needed awareness to DFV in our country. Although this year's challenge was done slightly differently to 'normal', we want to congratulate everyone that walked those kilometres and every single person that contributed to the funds raised. You've all put your best foot forward for an incredibly worthy cause.

21.01.2022 The principles of CPR between adults and children are generally the same, however given that children and infants have a smaller body mass, you do not need as much force to push down on their chest. Tony and Mel take us through the best way to do CPR on a child. #WorldRestartAHeartDay

21.01.2022 Today we travel to the Sunshine Coast to be #OnTheFrontline with Paul. A chance conversation with a paramedic who recommended the role saw Paul commence his career in 1996 in the United Kingdom. A decade later, in 2007, he made a decision most Brits dream of by relocating to Australia and joining the QAS ranks. Commencing with the QAS in the Darling Downs at Toowoomba Station, Paul went on to relieve at Chinchilla, Miles and Gatton before transferring to the beautiful Sunshi...ne Coast where he resides today causing jealousy for his friends back in the mother country. Our resident Brit is currently working out of Birtinya Station and loves the autonomy and variety of work that being an ambo entails. There have been many memorable moments in Paul's career as a paramedic, both here in Australia and over in the UK. He explains his standout memorable moment as being on shift at Toowoomba Station on day 1 of his working week when the 2011 floods struck. Witnessing the devastation firsthand and dealing with the aftermath of an event that seemed to come and go so quickly, will live with him forever. Paul considers himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to become a paramedic and provide support to those in the community at their time of need, no matter how big or small. We consider ourselves particularly lucky that your home country lent you to us, way back when. We're honoured to have you as part of #TeamTeal, Paul.

21.01.2022 Would you recognise the symptoms of a stroke? More than 56,000 strokes will be experienced by Australians this year alone! Remember to think F.A.S.T. For more information on stroke prevention, stroke treatment and stroke help visit https://strokefoundation.org.au/... #WorldStrokeDay2020

19.01.2022 Our Darling Downs region held a trauma training evening in Charlton this week, involving four simultaneous scenarios with the Toowoomba Operations Centre setting up a base of operations on site. Also involved in the exercise were advanced care paramedics, critical care paramedic interns, Queensland Health and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES. These training scenarios provide a great opportunity to strengthen our partnerships with allied services and enable professional development for those attending. A massive thanks to those who helped coordinate the event.

19.01.2022 ACTIVE INCIDENT Paramedics are remaining on stand by on K’gari (Fraser Island) as multiple bushfires are currently burning. Most recent information (1330hrs) from our colleagues at Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES is that the bushfire warning level is: ADVICE. ... Weather conditions continue to exacerbate fire and smoke conditions. Smoke will affect visibility and air quality on K’gari (Fraser Island) and adjacent mainland areas over the coming days. We're throwing a shout out to our colleagues battling the fires, our crews on stand by and the amazing volunteers providing support to our teams. We've heard the community has been amazing in supporting our Fraser Island officers by helping to clear vegetation around our station and setting up a sprinkler irrigation system. Thank you so much to the locals - we're thinking of you!

18.01.2022 We've already seen one tragic fatality of a motorcyclist recently as a result of an unsecured ute load and last week officers again treated a motorcyclist on the M1 who was extremely lucky to have only suffered minor injuries when a metal object became airborne after it was dislodged from a vehicle. If you’re in control of a vehicle, you’re responsible for ensuring your load is stable, secure and safe and that no contents of your load can fall out or be dislodged. To ensure ...you're being safe when towing or carrying objects you must: ~ make sure your vehicle is suitable to carry/tow the load, ~ position the load/object correctly, ~ use the right ropes/straps to restrain your load. Please don't let your trip home from work, run to the tip or road trip become one that changes someone's life or even worse, takes someone's life. Video footage credit: Dash Cam Owners Australia.

18.01.2022 THE LAST SLEEP Hang up the stockings and decorate that tree. The presents placed oh so perfectly. Milk and cookies are out, the kids are tucked in tight. You see reindeer need snacks too, a little love and fun. To help Santa through the night and get the important job done! One more sleep, kids......Merry Christmas and goodnight from the QAS.

17.01.2022 QATB Superintendent William Fredrick Blake was born in Mackay in 1885 and he commenced as an Honorary Ambulance Officer in his birth place in 1907. A few short years later, he was offered permanency there before he was promoted to Officer in Charge at Sarina and later transferred to Finch Hatton. 17.01.2022 We’d like to introduce you to 2020 Restart A Heart Day poster boy, Greg! Earlier this month Greg was competing in a triathlon in Agnes Water when he collapsed on the way out of the swim leg, a fellow competitor and friend noticed Greg and grabbed him out of the water. Quickly assisted by bystanders, including members from Surf Life Saving Queensland who recognised Greg was in cardiac arrest. A call to Triple Zero (000) was placed, members and bystanders began rotating thro...ugh rounds of compressions and delivered multiple shocks using an AED. Our paramedics Michael and Leanne arrived shortly after to join an already well functioning team that had given Greg the best chance at survival with their actions. Greg received further defibrillation from the QAS and by the time the rescue helicopter arrived, he was conscious and breathing and wondering what all the fuss was about. Not even a fortnight later, Greg is recovering well and ready to head home from hospital after having his own personal defibrillator implanted and a diagnosis of a genetic cardiac condition that his family can now all be tested for. We have no doubt that without following the three essential steps highlighted by this years #RestartAHeartDay campaign - call, push, shock - that there would have been a different story being told about Greg's triathlon, more unfathomable then the one we're telling you today. If you have already learnt CPR, maybe it’s time for a refresher? Check out our website for courses in your area and whenever you’re out and about next, familiarise yourself with the location of AED's at your local shops or recreation areas. Doing these simple things could save a life!

16.01.2022 Queensland has 0 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) today.

15.01.2022 Today is World Restart a Heart Day and it’s quite fitting that our #OnTheFrontline subject has demonstrated plenty of heart during her many years volunteering within the Logan community. A member of the Logan and District Local Ambulance Committee (LAC), June Nielsen has donated countless hours of her own time to lead CPR education sessions in homes, clubs, events and schools. Past attendees of these sessions will attest that CPR is tiring work and June has been volunteering ...since 2003 each class worthwhile if the knowledge saves a life or even gives someone the confidence of knowing they can save a life if need be. Eighty per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur at home, and June aims to empower her community with the skills to respond and keep loved ones alive until advanced medical care arrives. In the last few years June has extended her CPR awareness classes to the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Initially this was aimed at parents with sick children, however evolved into an invite for anyone wanting to learn. On top of the CPR Awareness program through the LAC, which generally costs a gold coin donation, June also works with our Community Education team teaching accredited first-aid courses. For all her time spent pushing ‘hearts’, June says what pulled hers towards this passion was the thought of being able to help a person at such a critical moment. Basic first-aid skills are so easy to learn and one way we can all help those around us. #WorldRestartAHeartDay

14.01.2022 A huge achievement for one of our Mackay staff in recognition of his work within the community. Neil John, a paramedic of 19 years, was recently awarded the Surf Life Saving Australia Surf Lifesaver of the Year during a virtual awards ceremony for his outstanding contribution to the delivery and development of surf lifesaving frontline services. As president and club captain of the Sarina Surf Lifesaving Club, Neil has spearheaded an initiative to better involve and engage with nipper families at the club and this has seen junior membership increase by more than 30% last year. The QAS has a long and distinguished history of working alongside Surf Lifesaving, especially in the Sarina region, and we’re proud to see Neil embodying the best of both organisations! *Group photo was taken prior to social distancing guidelines.*

14.01.2022 No Witch way about it, Shaine is creepin' it real this Halloween by bringing a spooky vibe to our Metro South office! If your little ghouls are planning on trick or treating tomorrow, please remember to: Stay socially distanced from trick or treaters who aren't part of your group... Wash and sanitise your hands often Only take wrapped lollies and candy Stay home if you are unwell, and most importantly Have a whole lot of fun! See more

14.01.2022 West Moreton paramedics attended a 'Careers Day' for the lucky school-leavers out Ipswich way last week. Paramedicine is a highly sought after position with the Queensland Ambulance Service and a very popular career choice. It requires a university degree and registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). We're hopeful that we inspired a few young people to kick start their future at the careers day event!

12.01.2022 Work doesn't stop for us as an ambulance service and while most of you are peeling prawns and cracking open a cold tinny as you play a bit of backyard cricket this Christmas day, #OnTheFrontline introduces you to critical care paramedic, Mick. This is not the first Christmas that Mick has worked, in fact, in his near 13 years on the job, this is about his 9th Christmas day working. With his wife also a paramedic, their family is all too familiar with this being the norm, alth...ough their three young children may beg to differ. Mick says his usual Christmas morning routine isn't put out too much though. "The kids wake early enough that they open their presents from Santa before I go to work. Then they generally spend the day with my wife’s family. It’s our youngest’s second Christmas and we’re yet to spend the day together - hopefully next year," Mick said. Critical care paramedics typically work solo, going to the most serious of cases to back up other crews, so when time permits back at Kedron station, Mick and his work mates will bring in some food and chocolate to share and get into the festive spirit with a secret Santa gift exchange in their tinseled-up surroundings. When asked what a Christmas Day looks like on the job he says, "typically, Christmas Day call-outs start with pediatric injuries - falls from new skateboards, bikes etc. In the afternoon/evening there seems to be an increase in alcohol related cases." One of the realities of the job this time of year, which is most sobering to Mick, is that Christmas isn't a pleasant time for everyone. For many, it is a tough time of year and this is reflected in the amount of mental health related jobs he attends on Christmas Day. For this reason he pleads to check in with family and friends that can't be with you this year for one reason or another. Please keep Mick and our other hard-working paramedics and health care workers in your thoughts today as they continue their vital work around the state. "Enjoy the opportunity to be with your loved ones and make sure you contact those that you can’t." That is Mick's Christmas wish for you all. Merry Christmas to all!

12.01.2022 **This warning is no longer current. It is now encompassed in the Fraser Island bushfire warning** LEAVE NOW: Cathedrals on Fraser (part of the Fraser Island fi...re) bushfire as at 3.45pm Sat 14 Nov Bushfire warning level: WATCH AND ACT Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire near Cathedrals at Fraser Island and conditions are getting worse. Follow your bushfire survival plan now. If you do not have a plan, your safest option is to leave now if it is clear to do so. If you are not in the area, do not return, as conditions are too dangerous. Currently as at 3.45pm Saturday 14 November a dangerous fire is travelling from north of Lake Bowarrady in the vicinity of Awinya Road, south towards Cathedrals on Fraser. It is expected to impact Cathedrals on Fraser in the next few hours. The fire could have a significant impact on the community. Residents and visitors are asked to leave via Maheno Beach and travel south toward Happy Valley. There is a separate bushfire warning issued for residents and visitors of Happy Valley. Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe you are under threat. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates. Put on protective clothing (e.g., a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles). Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. If you are leaving: Secure your pets for safe transport. Take your important documents and essential items (e.g., passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) when you leave. Drive with caution in low visibility conditions. If you are unable to leave: Bring pets inside; restrain them with a leash, a cage, or inside a secure room; and provide them with plenty of water. Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture away from your house. Fill containers such as your bath, sinks, and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water. Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house. If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by. 11.01.2022 With #WorldRestartAHeartDay tomorrow, October 16, our friends at Queensland Police Service have showed the timely reminder of why it is so important to know CPR. Little Lucas is lucky he had officers trained in infant CPR as it is a little different to that administered to adults. To learn to save a life or even refresh your skills you can visit: https://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/cprawareness.html

11.01.2022 We are so proud to announce that three Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics are recipients of the prestigious Ambulance Service Medal (ASM) in the Australia Day 2021 Honours List. Gary Cotterill has been a paramedic for 42 years commencing his career in 1979 at the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB) in Brisbane. Upon being made aware of his nomination and subsequent ASM award, Gary said it made him extremely proud to be a QAS paramedic. I was stunned. As it sl...owly dawned on me, I realised I’m in some exceptionally esteemed company here. Officer Gene Curtis is a Bowen local and has served in the QAS for more than four decades, commencing as an Honorary Ambulance Officer with the QATB in Cloncurry in 1979. Gene said ‘it was a desire to help my fellow man’ that has encouraged him to get up and put the teal uniform on for nearly 42 years of his life. Paramedic Julie Calvert has diligently served the Brisbane community for more than 32 years. She commenced her operational career with the QAS in 1989 as an Ambulance Officer and currently resides at Cleveland in Brisbane’s Metro South region. To be recognised and appreciated and actually receiving an award for doing something that I really enjoy, it feels really good, Julie said. QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles said the QAS was extremely proud of their ASM recipients for 2021 and all their achievements. With 116 years of service between Gary, Gene and Julie, it is no wonder the QAS is held in such high regard, Commissioner Bowles said. All three officers are very well-respected by their peers and their communities and have shown outstanding commitment, dedication and a genuine desire to make a positive difference to people’s lives. A huge congratulations to Gary, Gene and Julie on their ASM awards, from your QAS family.
