19.01.2022 Our executive team has pledged to walk or cycle at least 1000km collectively during October and November as part of Health and Wellbeing Queensland's Healthy Choices Pledge Challenge and we're well on our way... A member of our executive for four years, Dr Anthony Brown (pictured below) has cycled more than 500 kilometres already this month! Tony is the Executive Director of Medical Services, Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service and rides the 8km around Thursday Islan...d three times before work each day. On top of that he likes to catch the ferry across to Horn Island once a week for a two hour ride. 'I need to exercise every day to improve my productivity and sleep and health,' Tony, a former triathlete and marathon runner, said. And Tony's love of exercise runs in the family! Tony's wife, Ruth, who is the National Rural Health Commissioner, loves to ride with Tony when their diaries align, and their daughter Grace is the Australian Individual Time Trial (ITT) champion and 5th in the world at the ITT. What a team! #boostyourhealthy #wellbeing #health #clinicians #healthypledge Pic: Tony is pictured below just east of the Thursday Island Hospital looking south to Horn Island into the sunrise.

15.01.2022 "This year’s theme Always Was, Always Will Be honours culture and identity as vital to the wellbeing of us as Aboriginal people. Culture is the heart of our health, healing and happiness and identity is the foundation of culture. It’s a wonderful theme and I hope that anyone who is not of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent can reflect on the theme and try and understand the importance of the statement as a way of maintaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural identify, understandings and acceptance of our history and place in this country of ours." Christine Mann, a proud Woppaburra woman, Executive Director Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, North West HHS, Queensland Clinical Senate member. #NAIDOC2020

12.01.2022 We’ve blitzed it already! Our Senate executive set a challenge to collectively walk or cycle 1000kms this spring and we’ve already hit 3500km!!! (1,200km from our walkers, and more than 2,300 from those on two-wheels!) What an effort! How many kms do you think we'll total by the end of November? One-thousand of our cycling kms to date were contributed by Dr David Rimmer, a Senior Medical Officer in Longreach and a member of our executive since May 2017. David rides for the h...ealth benefits, both physical and mental. ‘I have a terrible family history of coronary artery disease with my father dying at age 50 from an Acute Myocardial Infarction, and so I decided to do a cardiac rehab program in my early 40s after one of the first CT calcium scores put my score at >95th centile for age,’ David said. ‘I got angina while training for the New York Marathon in 2005 and had a proximal LAD stent. It all went well but I never did get to the marathon. This month is a 15 year celebration of that stent so I put the motivation to use in the Great Cycle Challenge.’ https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/DavidRimmer Well done, David! And thanks Health and Wellbeing Queensland for inspiring us to take up the #boostyourhealthy pledge challenge. Picture: David with his training partner, Suzie, the border collie relaxing in the main street of Longreach after a training ride in preparation for the 110km from Longreach to Barcaldine.

03.01.2022 "NAIDOC always causes me to reflect on the efforts of my family group and other local elders and their efforts in making our lives better and struggles to turn our lives from survival to thriving. As a small child I witnessed work and struggle to make our local communities better, by my elders, enabling funding submissions for many ATSI community run services health, housing, legal aid. Their strength and tenacity , has inspired me to complete my own education, and what m...akes me committed to improving public health in QLD for my wider community. The release of progress in closing the gap targets in QLD by our CHO last week, was personally heartening to see as a collective we can make a difference in public service." 02.01.2022 This is Courtney, a registered nurse who normally works at the emergency department at Queensland Children's Hospital. This afternoon, a group of Queensland nur...ses, including Courtney, flew to Victoria to help with the state's efforts in managing COVID-19 outbreaks. These nurses are giving up time with their families and friends, as well as the mild Queensland winter, to assist our Victorian neighbours in conducting thousands of tests in COVID-19 hotspots. Their work will make a huge difference in helping to keep Victorians, and the rest of Australia, healthy and safe. All up, 40 Queensland nurses will be heading down south to help out. Courtney says, "My passion is to help my community. The call-out for nurses to deploy to Victoria was something I never expected that I could be a part of. I didn’t hesitate to put my hand up though. This is such a big opportunity for me as a nurse and I couldn’t think of a better way to help not only Queensland but also Australia. Our huge thanks go to this group of #HealthHeroes, plus all the others who volunteered, and the many more staffing our own COVID-19 testing clinics and hospitals!
