24.01.2022 COVID-19 restrictions eased to Stage 1 statewide

23.01.2022 Good news - due to the lack of community transmission in Queensland, we have been able to relax our visit restrictions. Prisoners can now have two visitors, including one child. Social distancing still applies. Please contact the prison directly to book visits.

22.01.2022 Last week, the Commissioner had the privilege of speaking with Queensland's Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young. Check out their full conversation below:

20.01.2022 Congratulations to all of the National Corrections Day Honours and Awards recipients.

20.01.2022 Officers from Rockhampton Community Corrections had a *paw-some* idea to brighten spirits in the office recently. They called on our friends at the Queensland Police Service (QPS) for an afternoon of animal therapy with the Rockhampton QPS detection dogs. Rue and Violet made a guest appearance and spent an hour with the team in the office, accompanied by their handler, Senior Constable O’Sullivan, who shared stories of life with his best working mates. ... The animal therapy session was a great way for the team to create energy, engage and connect with each other after a busy week. We are proud of the partnership we hold with QPS and the goal we share in keeping communities safe. Thanks Rue, Violet and Senior Constable O’Sullivan for the welcome visit!

19.01.2022 Great news...visit restrictions have eased. Prisoners can now have three visitors, and kids can now have physical contact. See the latest information:

15.01.2022 LIVE: Commissioner Peter Martin APM will address the media this afternoon following a range of disturbances at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre

13.01.2022 You’ve heard of raining cats and dogs, but at Townsville Correctional Centre, it seems only to rain cats. In the administration block. Anyone thinking about taking on the Superintendent role at Townsville Men’s Correctional Centre should be aware of recent history repeating itself.... It is not unusual to see feral cats inside the wire at TCC it is suspected they enter the centre through storm water pipes. The centre works with the RSPCA and council to trap and rehome the furry intruders, however more always seem to take their place. This in itself is not that much of an issue, until it is as A/Supt Brad Jones found out late last week. One minute it was an ordinary day at the office (although no day in corrections is the same) and the next, feline mayhem in the form of a handsome grey feral cat was unleashed, for the second time this year. It seems that puss unwittingly exceeded the weight limit on the office ceiling, and found himself unceremoniously dumped into the busy office area of the administration building. In a flash, following in the pawprints of his fellow feline drop-in, he hightailed it into the Superintendent’s office, which was unfortunately inhabited by the incumbent officer at the time. The rest was a tale of high drama, shouting (the A/g Supt) growling and yowling (the catwe think). Queensland Corrective Services prides itself on offering our officers diverse career opportunities and experiences. and while we’re not totally sure that the ‘feral cat challenge’ is in the official handbook, it may need to be included in the local practice instructions for TCC. Well done and congratulations to A/Supt Brad Jones for becoming the latest Supt at TCC to pass this significant milestone in their career. *We understand no cats or officers were injured in this incident.

09.01.2022 COVID-19 restrictions update

09.01.2022 The QCS family swelled with pride this week as two of our own were presented with their Australia Day Honours and Awards by His Excellency Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey, AC, at Government House. QCS Commissioner Peter Martin, APM, was on hand to witness the ceremony, at which CCO Kyle Patrech, of Escort and Security Branch, received the Bravery Medal, and former Deputy Commissioner Kerrith McDermott received the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division.... Officer Patrech’s Bravery Medal recognises his considerable bravery during an armed domestic violence event at Forest Lake in Queensland on 4 March 2018. Officer Patrech was at home when he responded to a neighbourhood domestic violence incident. Using skills acquired during his QCS training, Officer Patrech disarmed a knife-wielding man and managed to de-escalate a threatening situation. Ms McDermott, who is now retired from QCS, received her OAM for service to public administration in Queensland, including through roles as Senior Inspector in the Office of the Chief Inspector, General Manager of the Etna Creek Correctional Centre and the Capricornia Correctional Centre, General Manager of Statewide Operations, and Deputy Commissioner for Statewide Operations within Queensland Corrective Services.

08.01.2022 Knine, Loyal companion and cherished best mate of Custodial Correctional Dog Handler Michael Fell commenced service as a General Purpose Dog in 2013 after graduating from training with Mick in May of that year. Mick and Knine have always put their best foot, or feet in Knine’s case forward when carrying out their duties at Townsville Correctional Complex. Many an hour has been spent carrying out surveillance and foot patrols of Townsville’s large Correctional Complex as wel...l as being on hand to assist staff when required. Knine has a personality that is larger than life and is well known to have an intimidating attitude that when necessary will make you think twice about doing the wrong thing. However after 7 years of loyal service to Mick and the staff of Townsville Correctional Complex it’s time for Knine to put his paws up and call it a day, no more early rises and plenty of long afternoon siestas. We wish Knine a long and healthy retirement and thank him for his loyal service.
