25.01.2022 The Woman on the right with the crimson jacket is the Koala saviour who was sacked by the woman on the left (known as the koala killer) because she stood up for... the Koalas. It was hard watching the callous display of MPs from the Nationals, One Nation, Shooters and Fishers, right wing Liberals and Fred Nile stand one after the other and fire their political gun at the Koala. Thankfully the Bill was defeated, and the Koala has dodged the bullets for now, thanks to the integrity, compassion and courage of Catherine Cussack with fantastic support from Animals Justice Party, the Greens and Labor. 25.01.2022 There are those times when it all makes sense. When you witness the heart to heart connection that a koala can give to a human. It melts away the troubles we endure and there is a shared moment of hope in this present and mindful bond. Today @karla_noosa_koala created this scenario with the assistance of the amazing staff at Mantra French Quarter Noosa. Thanks to @wildlifehqzoo Arlo brought smiles and awe to all! Great day! Great people! A koality moment in time #mantrafrenchquarternoosa #noosa #visitnoosa #karlathekoalawithaheart #collaboration #hastingsstreet #savethekoalas #wildlifehq

22.01.2022 MONDAY MYTH BUSTING! Koalas will not use a tree a dog has urinated on Unfortunately, koalas do not recognize that dogs are dangerous per se so the smell of their urine will not cause them to avoid a tree or area. In fact, koalas will attempt to cross yards of homes with dogs in order to get to a tree or section of habitat they are interested in... Important fact: Even small dogs and/or a single dog bite pose a substantial risk to a koala. Their internal organs are easily pierced by a dog’s canines (even when there is no visible injury). If you even suspect a koala has suffered a dog bite please call 1-300-Animal ASAP. Always walk your dog on a lead in known koala habitat and bring them in at night.

22.01.2022 Most of the essential habitat for Koalas in Southern Queensland is on private land, with Land for Wildlife property owners having an important role to play in Koala conservation. This Note provides information on Koala ecology, habitat requirements and factors that threaten their survival. Thanks, Land for Wildlife for the concise and helpful info!

22.01.2022 Nominations for Board Members are due by 16 November. Contact [email protected] for more information.

20.01.2022 Wildlife crossings work. We need to push for more in Aus. We are woefully behind other countries in creating these safe passages for our wildlife.

17.01.2022 A simple, yet powerful message to start the week. SLOW DOWN! Wildlife signage is there for a reason!

17.01.2022 This week we had the priviledge of releasing handsome little 'Nugget', a male dispersal aged (1-2yr old) koala. Not only is Nugget possibly the most cutest, chi...lled out little guy in the region, but he is also one of the most luckiest. You see, Nugget spent at least 1.5 hours pacing up and down the concrete median strip of the Bruce Highway at Pomona one night a couple of weeks ago. Luckily for him we found him and removed him from danger. How he didn't get hit by the many cars and semi-trailers travelling 110km/hr is remarkable. After spending a little over a week at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, being thoroughly checked and tested for any issues, he was given the green light for release. September and October are peak breeding times for koalas and we see greatly increased levels of activity and movement, which unfortunately also translates into an increase in car hits. Koalas are no match for a car and most do not survive. Over the last 2 months, we have seen a number of hits on our local roads. We have listed some of the ones we responded to below to show how widespread our koala populations are in this area. This list doesn't include the many near-misses reported to us. o 3/09/20 - Bruce Highway southbound Eumundi o 9/09/20 - Cooroy Noosa Rd, Tinbeerwah (survived) o 27/09/20 - cnr Louis Bazzo Drive and McKinnon Drive, Ringtail Creek o 29/09/20 - Bruce Highway, Cooroy southbound on big hill o 1/10/20 - Bruce Highway, Cudgerie area northbound (jumped unmaintained koala fence) o 2/10/20 - Mary Valley Highway, Kandanga (survived) o 3/10/20 - Bruce Highway, Cudgerie area northbound (jumped unmaintained koala fence) o 5/10/20 - Old Bruce Highway, Kybong o 6/10/20 - Bruce Highway southbound, Federal (got through unmaintained koala fence - survived) o 9/10/20 - McKinnon Drive (north of Sunshine Butterflies), Cooroibah o 16/10/20 - Bruce Highway southbound, Pomona (unfenced section that needs fencing - survived) Koalas are widespread across most of Noosa Shire and surrounding areas, and we have reports of hits and near-misses from places that often surprise us, including urban areas. So please slow down and keep you eyes on all roads night AND day..... yes several of the hits that have occurred this season were during daylight hours.

16.01.2022 This season has been a busy one and we are glad it is finally slowing down a little, as breeding time tapers off. Our team has responded to 70 koalas in the wi...der Noosa region since the 1st July. No mean feat! Our team would be lost without the valuable contribution of those members we affectionately call our 'zoomies'. These special people often head out to cases where we wish to do a visual health check on a koala. They provide us with valuable high resolution close-up images that help us decide whether or not a koala needs to be brought into care to be tested and to potentially undertake treatment for disease, most often the nasty chlamydia. The earlier we can get chlamydia cases into care, the better chances they have of being successfully treated. If you sight a koala, let us know about it and we can undertake a visual health check via our Zoomie superstars. Alternately if you have the ability, feel free to send through to us any close-up pictures you may be able to get. Any koala with red, weepy or gunky eyes, or with a stained or wet looking rump (even only slightly) needs to be reported through, so that we can check and respond accordingly.

12.01.2022 Fantastic book launch today with Karla the Koala and friends. Arlo visited from Wildlife HQ eating leaf and living large! Thanks to our amazing volunteers, our ambassador Meghan, and Fizzi’s crew for making this a success. Photo credit: Stefanie Fishel. #koalasofinstagram #koalas

10.01.2022 Please DO NOT GIVE WATER TO KOALAS BY POURING WATER FROM BOTTLES INTO THEIR MOUTHS. PLACE A BOWL OF WATER ON THE GROUND OR POUR THE WATER IN TO YOUR HAT/HELMET/...CUP ETC AND HOLD NEAR KOALAS MOUTH SO THAT IT CAN LAP AT IT With all the facebook posts about wonderful people caring for wildlife amidst the fire and heat disasters over these past weeks a silent tragedy is happening. Koala's are DYING because people are trying their best to help but don't understand how a koala actually drinks. The little Koala seen in the middle picture is Arnie. He comes from a little town north of Bairnsdale. Arnie survived the heat wave AND fires with only minor burns to his feet and hands. His burns were healing. He survived losing his mum and the loss of his home. He was found by some very caring people who did what any human would do when they find a distressed animal, and offered him a drink from their bottle of water. They were just trying to help. They didn’t know that it is dangerous for Koala’s to drink this way. They didn’t know that Koala’s usually get most of their water via the gum leaves that they eat and they don’t often drink water, but when they do, they are face down and lapping small amounts with their tongue. They didn’t know that when a Koala holds it head up and takes in too much water, it can easily get in to their lungs and cause Aspiration Pneumonia, which is usually fatal. This is exactly what happened to little Arnie. Despite a mammoth rescue effort involving all three emergency services and wildlife rescuers he died more specifically he drowned. It was heartbreaking for everyone involved. That is why we want to share this post. So people can help in the best way possible. If you find a Koala in need of help in the heat or in a fire zone, please DO NOT OFFER IT WATER BY TIPPINY IT FROM A BOTTLE OR CUP INTO THEIR MOUTHS AND NEVER FORCE A KOALA TO DRINK. IF it is safe to do so then catch it in a blanket and transport to the nearest shelter, otherwise take note of its location and let someone know the details. Please note that Koalas can cause nasty injuries so if the Koala is resisting do not try and pick it up. If you are nowhere near help then the best way to hydrate koalas is to PLACE A BOWL OF WATER ON THE GROUND OR POUR THE WATER IN TO YOUR HAT/HELMET/CUP ETC AND HOLD NEAR KOALAS MOUTH SO THAT IT CAN LAP AT IT, FACE DOWN. PLEASE remember that Koalas are arboreal and nocturnal. If you see one sitting on the ground during the day then please contact a wildlife rescue organisation. They are usually very stressed if they are at the point of allowing human interaction, so please do not try and take selfies with the animal as you are just causing continued stress. PLEASE share this. With all the videos going viral of people giving them water from their bottles, the koalas have an added risk, during an already dangerous time! Please tell all of your friends... and if you see a video of someone pouring water out for a Koala comment on it saying: "PLEASE DO NOT GIVE KOALAS WATER BY POURING IT. JUST LET THEM LAP AT THEIR OWN PACE. IF IT GETS IN THEIR LUNGS IT COULD KILL THEM.

06.01.2022 It's an ambitious dream Tennis champion Pat Rafter is assisting with the first step of creating a koala corridor that stretches across parts of northern NSW..., from Bangalow to the Clarence, out to Tenterfield and back through the Lismore local government area. It will take many millions of trees and volunteer hours but Bangalow Koalas is confident they'll ace it especially with a little star power like Pat Rafter to encourage more volunteers and landholders to sign up. 04.01.2022 MYTH BUSTING MONDAY! Koalas are cuddly While a koala bred in a zoo may be safe to have placed in your arms (smile!) a wild koala is after all a wild animal. They also have strong legs, long claws and sharp teeth, can and will scratch and bite when scared.... Important fact: If you encounter an injured or sick koala the safest option is to call for an experienced wildlife rescuer (1-300-Animal). If the koala has come to ground and you happen to have a thick blanket you can put this over the koala until help arrives (but remember the strong, long and sharp bits mentioned above!)

04.01.2022 We have had a couple of hot days so its good to know what you can do to help a koala which may be suffering from heat stress. Please ring 1300KOALAZ for advice before assuming a koala is suffering from heat stress, it may just be something else.

04.01.2022 Nobody said being a mum was an easy job, but this mother koala makes it look so easy when three joeys decide to have a pile-on!

01.01.2022 No ball!!! No I am not a cricket umpire! It's just that dear Servan that I first spotted on Wednesday 18 November on the Service Road of Noosa National Park, is... not a big boy but in fact a big gorgeous girl with an immaculate white chest (no scent gland) and a possibly promising pouch. A name change was required of course. She will be now known as Servanda which in Latin means: "she who must be saved and protected", a name that would in fact suit all our koalas! Welcome to Noosa National Park gorgeous Servanda, be safe snd healthy and have a long life! If you happen to see her in the Park please be quiet and respect her rest (18-20 hours a day!), do not agglomerate around her tree, stay at least 10m from her tree, do not touch her tree, do not try to get her attention and she'll be a happy and not stressed koala. We can't wait to see her first joey! Bernard See more

01.01.2022 Great report from our friends in Victoria.
