25.01.2022 Brisbane suburb becomes focus of council pool safety crackdown CARINDALE has been the focus of a Brisbane City Council crackdown on pool safety in the last year, with 115 inspections taking place across the suburb. Council has undertaken pool inspections across Brisbane since new State Government pool safety regulations came into place in December 2015. Of 242 in Brisbanes southeast suburbs last year, nearly 48 per cent were in Carindale. A council spokesman said the high em...phasis on Carindale was influenced by the suburbs high proportion of pools and community correspondence. Inspections are conducted proactively and in response to complaints, he said. Several properties with pools required more than one inspection to achieve compliance. Brisbane Lifestyle and Community Services chairman Matthew Bourke said council had done more than 2000 pool inspections since updated regulations came into place. Compliance ... is a matter of safety, particularly for young children, he said. For serious regulation breaches that impact on safety, council will issue an enforcement notice. More than 40 per cent of pool owners in Brisbanes southside fail to regularly inspect the safety of their pool area, according to results found by the Poolwerx healthy pools survey. The survey also revealed 53 per cent of parents with children under five were not confident their child could get themselves out of a pool if they fell in. Swim safety ambassador and Founder of the Kids Alive program Laurie Lawrence said he was stunned by the findings but said it wasnt too late for pool owners to make a change. 24.01.2022 Recently during a Pre-Purchase Pool Inspection, we visited a house with a pool that was fitted with the skimmer box shown in the photo. This type of skimmer box is known in the industry as a Potty Skimmer and are potentially very dangerous. To a child these skimmer boxes appear to be a convenient seat and if used in that way they can cause entrapment and possible disembowelment. If you have a pool with this type of skimmer box installed, please seek immediate assistance from your pool shop to make modifications to the skimmer box to make it safe.

24.01.2022 The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) have issued a media statement regarding compulsory pool safety compliance by homeowners by 30 November. 12 February, 2015 Pool safety compliance compulsory by 30 November ... From 30 November, all Queensland swimming pools will be required to meet a new, swimming pool-barrier standard, which has been phased in over the past five years. Commissioner of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), Steve Griffin, said the new single standard was designed to increase pool safety and simplify pool safety laws, which previously included 11 different safety standards. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under five, and effective fencing and associated safety measures, along with supervision and learning to swim can save lives. The new standard covers such things as the height and strength of barriers, mandatory non-climbable areas, gate-latching requirements and preventing direct access from a building into a pool area. The standard applies to new and existing pools in houses, unit complexes, hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, caravan parks and mobile van parks. Mr Griffin said it was the responsibility of all pool owners to ensure their pools complied with the new standard by 30 November, or earlier if the property is sold or leased. Pool owners have had five years to prepare for the new standard and if they are not sure if their pool is compliant, they should contact a pool safety inspector as soon as possible, Mr Griffin said. He said there was also information on the QBCC website to help home owners to assess their pools, and owners could also make enquiries 24/7 to the QBCC by phoning 139 333. Mr Griffin said the QBCC and local council authorities would undertake random compliance audits of swimming pools to ensure pool owners are complying with safety standards.

11.01.2022 Never assume someone else is watching the kids. Drowning is the leading cause of death of American children younger than 5, and theyre more likely to drown in a backyard pool than any other body of water, an expert says. ... "What we often hear in the emergency room is that a group was gathered at the pool for an event or party, but no one was taking ownership of watching the children in the pool," Dr. Natalie Lane, medical director of the emergency department at Childrens Hospital of Georgia, said in a hospital news release. "Unfortunately, folks think someone else is watching the kids, or falsely assume that everyone is keeping an eye out. This is where the trouble begins," she said. See more

08.01.2022 Do I Need A Pool Safety Certificate? There is currently a lot of confusion regarding pool safety certificates and the requirements from 1st December 2015. If you are selling or leasing a residential property with a non-shared pool, you will need a pool safety certificate the same requirement as now. If you are not selling or leasing your property, you normally do not require a pool safety certificate, there are some exceptions to this, for example if you are running a home... base child care service. From 1st December, you are required however, to ensure your pool safety barrier meets the current pool safety standard. A check list is available as a free download from our website www.qldpoolinspections.com for you to check for common areas of non compliance yourself. For peace of mind we provide a Consultative Pool Inspection Service, we check your property is entered on the pool safety register and your pool barrier is compliant. Following our consultative pool inspection we provide either a letter advising that your pool complies, or written advice on the areas your pool is non-compliant, together with suggested remedial action. This is an ideal service if you want to ensure your pool is safe and meets the required legislation, but you do not require a certificate. See more

01.01.2022 Clock ticking for pool owners The Palaszczuk Government is urging the states swimming pool owners to ensure their pool fences comply with state laws by 1 Decemberto ensure their summer fun doesnt end in tragedy. Minister for Housing and Public Works Leeanne Enoch today launched a public awareness campaign to make sure all pool fences measure up to safety laws.... The campaign will include print, radio and television advertising along with social media to make sure pool owners know their responsibilities in the countdown to the end of a five-year grace period. The previous Labor Government introduced these laws in 2010 to keep our children safe and while pool owners have had five years to comply we know that thousands of pools may still not measure up, Ms Enoch said. Fencing is a crucial first line of defence when it comes to protecting young children from drowning. Local councils will begin policing pool fences from 1 December, and owners who do not comply could face on-the-spot fines starting at around $800. Minister Enoch said about 340,000 pools had been registered in Queensland, but it was estimated thousands more had not, and many of those may not comply. More than 111,000 pool safety certificates have been issued since the registration system started in 2010, Ms Enoch said. Of course, while pool owners need to make sure their pools comply by 30 November, they only have to obtain a safety certificate if they are selling or leasing the property. The campaign has included the development of materials including online checklists pool owners can print and take out into the backyard to assess their own pool. If they are still unsure, they can seek advice from the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), their local council or they can call in a licensed inspector. Ms Enoch said that in 2013/14 the Queensland Family and Child Commission reported two cases of children under the age of five who drowned in pools. In the same year there were 94 ambulance callouts and near drownings for children aged one to fivethats 94 cases where there is a high risk of permanent physical damage from a drowning experience, she said. Supervising young children, teaching them to swim and having effective pool fencing can save livesand it is just too important not to act.
