22.01.2022 Heres an intersting implant complication I was referred a couple of weeks ago - a fractured abutment screw. Usually these are removed very simply as there is no preload on the screw once the screw head has fractured off, however a previous attempt to mobilise the screw had burnished the superficial threads in the implant, blocking the exit of the fractured screw portion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAJXxbQQ9SU

17.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IpN0XrB7c One of my best mates has been advising me to try Traxodent for some time now. I feel extremely comfortable using retraction cord so I have been hesitant to change. Our generous rep at Gunz supplied me with a sample, which sat on my desk until today. This is a preparation of an extremely broken down tooth. Any ferrule was accessed from the sub gingival space using a long-bevel approach. This is an unconventional technique which utili...ses 30 blade carbides to plane the dentine in the marginal area. The patient was on blood thinners so the gingiva bled quite a bit - the perfect test for a new haemostat agent! I took two impressions in order to compare the procedures and outcomes side by side. Note these are long-bevel margins so you dont always have the luxury of a visible end point on the impression. My observations are Traxodent controlled the bleeding incredibly well and very quickly. The pressure applicators supplied with the Traxodent didnt really fit the tooth so served little purpose. The retraction offered by Traxodent was disappointing compared with cord. That being said for chamfer or shoulder margins I believe both techniques are perfectly adequate. So if retraction cord is not your thing, Traxodent might improve your impressions. That being said, if you are comfortable with cord, You will probably have better gingival retraction and save some dollars on materials compared with Traxodent. PS. One other shortcoming of using the product I noted was usually I prepare teeth with cord in place (see my other videos). This prevents gingival damage and minimises bleeding. If you use Traxodent I cant imagine you would go to the effort of packing cord, only to remove it after preparation to then use Traxodent for the impression - once cord is packed your are already there! Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences with these products. Mike Lewis
