22.01.2022 It is with great disappointment that we announce the further reschedule of the 2020 edition of the Australasian Quilt Convention due to take place in August 2...020. With no certainty over time frame for review of the ratio for mass gatherings due to government restrictions, we are left with no choice but to reschedule to April 15 to 18, 2021. This will come for many as little of a surprise but remains a great disappointment to all, our primary concern is always the responsibility we feel towards our attendees and exhibitors. We look forward to bringing you AQC in 2021. www.aqc.com.au Quilt in the background is by Brenda Gael Smith.

20.01.2022 Appraisals of your quilts are restarting with Qld Quilters in November. If you have something you want appraised before Christmas, a very quick email to Appraisals would be the best.
20.01.2022 Did any of you make blocks?
19.01.2022 It has been such a delight to be involved in the Queensland Quarantine Quilt. The project was brainchild of our ABC Brisbane Breakfast presenters Craig Zonca an...d Loretta Ryan. The challenge was to design and make a 15 x 15cm quilt square in any medium, that represented your life in lockdown in 2020. The squares were collected and then arranged and sewn onto a backing sheet by the amazing members of the Queensland Spinners Weavers and Fibre Artists Association. A mammoth effort completed by a dedicated team. The Quilt is on display the ABC at Southbank Brisbane until mid August and will then go to the State Library of Queensland to be treasured forever.

16.01.2022 The Bayeux Tapestry can arouse obsessiveness of many kinds in modern historians. One type involves tallying the number of images. There are, we are told, 626 humans, 190 horses, 35 dogs, 37 trees, 32 ships, 33 buildings, etc., in the tapestry. I know each and every one of these guys.
16.01.2022 The pattern for the Bayeux was drawn on velum. That way I could reverse it to create the applique patterns. Now Im using the drawings to complete the features... on the faces. I spent quite some time working through each section today. The drawings are in containers that are sealed and stored safely, and this is the first time Ive had them out for a while. I just love seeing them all again. Fills my heart.
15.01.2022 Here is another great idea, and a cheap and easy tool. Apologies if this has already been posted here. It is a You Tuber called Sugaridoo. https://youtu.be/cupY-YBlL84

13.01.2022 I hope you are all still sewing your Own Quilts of Life.
13.01.2022 Its rained most of the day, and Ive put in about 8 hours of applique. I need to walk about 10.000 steps, so I jump up when the rain stops, I think I must look... like a dork walking around the back yard, but when you sit for that long you need to exercise too. Its an applique kind of day today. The faces and hands are appliqud with a very small open zig-zag and this machine, the Janome M7 Continental has made it so much easier for me. Im able to applique without a backing on the fabric, and it is very sensitive to the material. I use a sharp needle which also helps. I dont need to use the knee lift, set on the correct setting; it lifts the foot when I stop, and I can pivot without any effort. One of the problems Ive had physically has been using the knee lift, this machine helps immeasurably. I have a creative relationship with each of the people on the quilt. At each section, I study and then write the progression of the people and actions depicted. The rest of the applique is a tiny blanket stitch. The 9-foot sample section was done in satin stitch, but it was just a little too heavy for the effect I wanted the viewer to see. I want people to look at it as almost dimensional. The soldiers have colour on their hands and faces, their clothes are contoured, and the muscles on the horses are gently shown. There are so many facets to each scene. Each reel of thread, each needle, bobbin, applique piece and hours worked is captured in detail, for my own information.

01.01.2022 The request from Craig Zonca, ABC Radio, for squares for a Qld Quarantine Quilt has brought back memories of the Quilts QQ helped ABC Radio make in 2005. I cant believe it was so long ago! It was during my first stint as President. Ive dug up some photos for you to remember them. Currently both quilts hang at the ABC Studios as Southbank. Ill be in contact with Craig next week and will report and further developments.
