25.01.2022 IKE is a 11 year old Border Collie who has just finished his 4 month course of chemotherapy for Lymphoma under the care of Dr Hannah Schneider (pictured) and the trust medicine nurse team incorporating many great humans including Georgia (pictured) and Hayley. He’s been such a champ with his visits and is now in remission! His dad Chris (pictured), has helped IKE along the way!

24.01.2022 Meet Coffee and family. Coffee is a great little dog that got a little too adventurous and ended up battling gravity and losing. Coffee jumped off the balcony and fracture his left forearm (Radius and ulna). The fracture was a difficult one due to the high energy involved, combined with the close proximity to the wrist joint (Carpus - only 15mm between the fracture and the joint) which limits room for fixation. Coffee underwent a complex surgery with Dr Lucas Beierer and Sea...n Wood under the careful support of the surgical nursing team who closely monitored the anaesthetic. Repair was completed by applying 2 locking plates to this very small bone. Bone graft was harvested from near the shoulder and applied during the surgery to ensure the fracture heals quickly. Coffee returned today for a 2 week review, running around with a bad haircut (our fault! sorry mum) and looking great. 4 more weeks of rest should get the job done.

22.01.2022 Meet the handsome "Curtis". Curtis is a big cat, with an even bigger personality. While his family were away, he got himself into some trouble sustaining a broken right femur (thigh bone). Only he knows how it happened but the injury was very serious. It resulted in a high energy explosion of his femur into something akin to a bag of marbles. He presented to the clinic Friday evening and was all fixed up by Saturday morning. Our specialist surgical team led by Dr Lucas Beierer put him back together with a series of bone plates, screws, wire and intramedullary pin. The extensiveness of the broken bone necessitated this belt-and-braces repair. He is now up and back on 4 legs ready to heal and get back into more mischief.

22.01.2022 Please welcome Dr Guy Bird to our QVS surgical team. We are very very excited to have Guy on board. Guy graduated from James Cook University in 2013, after which completed two separate specialty trainee programs. Guy then completed a 3-year specialist residency training program in Small Animal Surgery at Murdoch University. ...During that time he also completed a Masters of Veterinary Clinical Studies. After his residency training he spent a year at a busy private practice specialist clinic in Perth, before moving back home to Brisbane. He is currently also enrolled and near completion of a masters in research of fracture biomechanics. Guy is also working towards achieving diplomatic status with the European College of Veterinary Surgeons with examinations being completed mid 2021. Guy is passionate about all aspects of surgery with special interests in fracture repairs, neurosurgery and complex angular limb deformities. Dr Guy Bird BVSc, GradDipEd, MVetClinStud

20.01.2022 Axel on the mend and heading home after a huge week of surgery and healing. See you next week Axel!

19.01.2022 Meet the beautiful TOTO. She is a 3 year old Labradoodle on her second litter. Her first litter was an uneventful delivery. On this occasion though, she went into labour prematurely. She had placental detachment and gave birth in part naturally, and in part by Caesarean. Bitch and pups were fine at birth but pups were premature. The point of this story is about pup care. Often we think that all the effort in creating pups is in conceiving, pregnancy and birth. However ...birth is just the start. Some bitches will manage neonates and lactation with little human input. Some require loads of help. Because TOTO’s pups were so premature they required intense management. What does that mean? It means absolutely dedicated nursing and husbandry 24/7 for a week or two, but most importantly in the first 48 hours of life. This in turn means: a controlled environment, controlled temperature, assisted suckling every one-two hours, followed by assisted toileting. In a big litter this means separating the pups into two batches. Its helpful if the bitch is compliant but she may not be and an added complication can be inducing the bitch to co-operate in the suckling process. And all that is before either bitch or pups show signs of illness, which is common. Happily TOTOs owner is skilled and experienced and resolutely dedicated and the outcome was a happy family well on their way to weaning.

18.01.2022 We are extremely excited to announce commencement of our SPECIALIST DENTISTRY service at QVS Northlakes. Please meet Dr Basuki. You can contact our Northlakes clinic if your general practice veterinarian believes you may benefit from the services of a specialist dentist. Dr. Williana Basuki BVSc (Hons), MS, MANZCVS, DAVDC... Board Certified in Veterinary Dentistry (Registered Specialist) Will was born and grew up in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. She earned her veterinary degree at the University of Queensland in 2010. Following veterinary school, she embarked on her journey as a small animal veterinarian before entering a year of rotating internship followed by a year of surgery internship here at QVS. She pursued her dream to become a specialist in veterinary dentistry and undertook a 3-year residency in Dentistry and Oral Surgery along with a master’s degree at Colorado State University, USA. Following her residency, she became a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College by examination and worked as a full-time veterinary dentist at Tufts Veterinary Emergency and Specialties in Massachusetts (USA). During her time at Tufts University, she was also heavily involved in teaching veterinary dentistry to veterinary students and hold an Adjunct Associate Professor position. She delivered numerous lectures and involved in multiple continuing education programs at different conferences for the past years. Will returned to Australia in 2020 and joined Queensland Veterinary Specialists as the first and only registered small animal specialist in veterinary dentistry in Queensland. She embraces all aspects of dentistry, but she particularly enjoys endodontic procedures, oral tumour, and oral surgery cases. Will has 2 cats, Felix and Sabertooth. Will entrusted their care to one of her good friends in Brisbane while she was overseas as these two dramatic cats could not even leave the house without thinking the world was going to end. She is very delighted to be reunited again with her furry children following her return to Australia in 2020. She decided to adopt dwarf hamsters (Truffle and Oyster) during her time in Massachusetts instead of adopting other species as hamsters are prohibited in Australia (they were very cute, loveable, and entertaining). https://www.qldvetspecialists.com.au/team/#willianab

17.01.2022 Meet Pablo and dad Andrew. Only Pablo knows what sort of mischief he got up too, but after disappearing one night he returned with a very beaten up back left leg. Pablo managed to fracture both his femur (thigh bone) and his tibia/fibula (shin bones). Fortunately with the right expertise, we are able to fix almost any broken leg. Pablo underwent surgery Friday evening. Drs Lucas and Liz went to work repairing both bones in one surgical sitting, using a combination of plates, screws and pins. He was home on Monday looking a bit bruised but able to walk on his leg again. Hopefully he stays out of trouble during his recuperation.

15.01.2022 Meet Koah. Koah unfortunately ran into a fast moving land cruiser on Friday night and came away a little worse for wear. She sustained a serious eye injury, 2 broken legs (her radius and ulna of her right front leg and her back right femur) and bruising on her spleen. She underwent a complicated repair on Saturday afternoon by Dr Lucas Beierer, Dr Peihan Lu and Technician Nav. It was a marathon effort. Surgery involved applying bone plates to the radius and ulna, followed by ...a pin and screws to the femur. Testament to her strength and fitness, she is coming home today walking on all 4 legs with nothing but a slight limp. Dogs are spectacular. See you soon for your check up Koah.

12.01.2022 Whose a good boy? Kaido is. Kaido is a very good boy! This is Kaido behaving himself 6 weeks post total hip replacement.... He presented to our hip replacement team (Drs Lucas Beierer and Tim Pearson, Jenna Garland, Katie Statham, Courtney Daniels & Bailey Austin) for management of a chronic left pelvic limb lameness. A diagnosis of a chronic femoral head fracture was made and a hip replacement completed in August. Current recovery has been amazing and in another few weeks he can run around the park again! https://www.qldvetspecialists.com.au/total-hip-replacement

10.01.2022 Meet Moe. Moe is a super cute 13-year old Shih Tzu mix who was referred to Specialist Dentist Dr. Williana Basuki after the primary veterinarian noted cystic structures on his recent dental radiographs. Dr. Basuki suspected that Moe developed a dentigerous cyst from his unerupted left lower first premolar. A dentigerous cyst may get bigger over the time and cause a jaw fracture as it weakens the jaw due to its expansile nature. It is very surprising (and very lucky) that Moe ...had the cysts in his jaw without any issues after all these years! Dr. Basuki surgically removed the cystic structures and associated teeth to prevent further recurrence. At the same time, Moe also had teeth extractions due to concurrent periodontal disease. He had a total of 17 teeth extractions (ouch!), and he was hospitalized overnight for pain management. Moe ate during his overnight stay at QVS North Lakes and he was such a good boy. He returned to Dr. Basuki for a recheck exam 2 weeks after the surgery and his extraction sites have healed well. Moe is now allowed to eat his dry food and play with his toys again.

09.01.2022 Meet the stunning 2 year old Rottweiler 'Jersey' and her 11 puppies. She came from Bundaberg to be bred under the guidance of Drs Phil & Xavier from our reproduction team. Jersey's owner Sue, has been using the QVS reproduction service since 2016 and continues to make the travel to Brisbane to ensure she has the best outcome of pregnancywith her bitches. This is a fantastic outcome of surgical Intra-uterine insemination, using frozen sperm. At the time of surgery, Jersey's ...prognosis for fertility was good, being that she was young, healthy, her first litter and ideal ovulation timing. Dr Phil was ecstatic to hear that Jersey had 11 puppies, under the care of her veterinarian in Bundaberg. We thank Sue for her loyal service to QVS and the trust she has in Drs Phil & Xavier with her precious bitches.

08.01.2022 WELCOME BACK VINNIE!!! One of our favourite patients returned for a visit this weekend to bring our staff a yummy cake! Vinnie was diagnosed with a bone tumour back in Aug 2017 and unfortunately had to have his hind leg amputated. Like a champ, he spung back from the surgery only to have to undergo a course of chemotherapy. Not only did he complete his course, he got a clear bill of health, free of any cancer. Vinnie is 9 years old this year and looking more handsome than ever !! Thank you to Vinnie's owner Sean for bringing in a cake every year and letting Vinnie visit all the nurses and vets at QVS Stafford. Ps the cake made it through to Monday for the rest of the team to enjoy too!

04.01.2022 Works have begun on our new, Brisbane central, world class hospital! The excavators have moved in to make way for the long-awaited development of our new hospital. This is a very exciting time for Queensland Veterinary Specialists and Pet Emergency as we move forward with the construction of our 1100 sqm, purpose built hospital. The hospital will open in 2021 and will provide a state-of-the-art facility to provide the best care for our patients.... During construction, we continue to operate as normal from both our Stafford and North Lakes hospitals.

04.01.2022 Torrey's Story, as told by his mum Katrina. It was the panting that first brought to my attention that Torrey was in pain. A 10-year-old Swiss shepherd x cattle dog, Torrey had visited Queensland Veterinary Specialists five years earlier for a toggle-pin hip surgery following a hip dislocation. He had since then had a slight limp but carried on life as an energetic dog, enjoying playing, walks and swims. I was able to rule out temperature and anxiety as causes of Torrey's pan...ting, so I booked him in with my GP vet for some radiographs. I was shocked to see the extreme deterioration of Torrey's femoral head and neck, and that he had been able to mask what would have been significant pain despite extreme joint degeneration and osteoarthritis. Torrey is otherwise healthy and I wanted to try to give him the best senior years he can possibly have, so I sought a referral to QVS to discuss Torrey's options. Through consultation with Dr Lucas Beierer it was determined that Torrey was a suitable candidate for a total hip replacement (THR). Torrey's THR surgery went smoothly and within a few days he was home. I was amazed when I collected him to see how well he could walk to me! Torrey has now had his two-week check-up and I could not be happier at how he is progressing. On the brief leash walks he is currently permitted, he is moving better than I have seen in years, and weight bearing brilliantly on his repaired leg. I'm so glad pushed through my nervousness to get Torrey the THR - my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Thank you Dr Lucas Beierer, Dr Tim Pearson and all the nursing and administrative staff that cared for Torrey.
