12.01.2022 HEATWAVE WARNING - BURNETT REGION - 02/12/2020 ANIMALS SUFFER IN THE HEAT JUST LIKE HUMANS DO. We are sure most of you are feeling it, but we are in for a scorcher the next few days.... Please keep your pets in mind as well and ensure they are hydrated, have access to shade and look for signs of heat stress. If you can feel the heat so can your pet. Please keep them cool by trying some of the following tips: If you are going to walk your pets, make sure you do it either early morning or late afternoon. NEVER leave any pet in your car. It only takes a few minutes for pets to die of heat stroke. Keep a spray bottle in the fridge to keep it cool, when you can see your pet is really hot, try spraying your pet in places like under the arms/legs, stomach and behind the ears to cool them down. Wet a towel, ring out all the excess water and place it in the freezer. The towel will freeze if left in the freezer long enough. Place this towel in a shady area outside so your pet can lay on it to cool its body temperature. If you have pets that are particularly vulnerable to the heat such as bird, guinea pigs, chicks, even rats/mice, please bring them inside during the hot days. Allow them to run free in a place that has cool tiles such as a laundry or bathroom. Put ice cubes in your pet’s water bowl to keep the water at a cool temperature for your pet to drink. It’s also a good idea to provide extra water bowls in the summer time as your pet may drink more water than normal. Make sure your pet has plenty of shady areas. A cheap clam shell pool kept in the shade, filled with water is a great way for your pet to have fun and cool down. Frozen treats or fruits are a great treat for hot animals. Think about investing in a cool gel mat. Many animals such as birds, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs control their body temperate through their feet. Try wetting their feet to cool them down. Also, think about the animals that don’t have owners such as the wildlife. Try leaving some bowls of water around your place so the birds and wildlife can enjoy and escape from the sun.
