25.01.2022 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

25.01.2022 JUNIOR DIRECTED PLAY Here are some photos of Directed Play P - 2, Board Games with Mrs Camilleri. Students look like they are having so much fun!

24.01.2022 OUR TWEENS WANT INDEPENDENCE FROM US - NOT DISCONNECTING FROM US. WE NEED TO FOCUS MORE ON CONNECTION THAN CONTROL During adolescence, our teens need our love, support and influence more than ever. What they don’t need is our control. By adolescence, we don’t have it any anyway. We might have the illusion of control, but the harder we push to control them, the more we risk losing them. Our teens are resourceful, creative and brave and if they want something enough they will... do it anyway. When we attempt to control them, we are pushing against thousands of years of evolution and their drive to explore their independence. They can’t make the transition from childhood to adulthood without establishing some sort of separation from us. They might push against us, and sometimes this will feel fierce. This is not to push us away, but to loosen themselves from under our wing. Sometimes the closer they are, the harder they have to push. And sometimes, in the quest for separation and independence, it’s our connection with them that gets lost. They have important work to do, so it’s up to us as their parents to hold on to that connection tightly enough for them and for us, for whenever they need it. They will come back, but first they have work to do and it’s okay if this takes time and tears and ‘outside voices’ inside. It’s a learning adventure for all of us. Whenever we can, we need to nurture the fire in them that is looking to discover who they are. We can do this by asking their opinions, listening more than talking, valuing their insight, and letting them to teach us what it’s like to be in their world. The more we try to control them, the more we squander our precious opportunities to influence them. They are less likely to come to us if they expect lectures, preaching, shame, judgement or harsh consequences. When the connection with them is there, hopefully, sometimes, they will let us take the precious and privileged place beside them as they explore, learn and grow. So often, our greatest parenting moments and connection with them will happen in the middle of the mess, but first we need for them to offer us a seat at the table. Thank you for sharing ‘Hey Sigmund - Karen Young’

23.01.2022 THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING EMPATHY Empathy is not found in many official school standards, but it could be one of the most important qualities to develop in young citizens who will go on to be successful contributors in our complicated world. Dr. Brene Brown says empathy consists of four qualities: the ability to take the perspective of another person, staying away from judgment, recognizing emotion in others, and communicating it. She defines empathy as "feeling with people,..." and notes that it's a "vulnerable choice" because it requires a person to tap into something personal that identifies with the struggle of another. Children have opportunities to learn empathy from their parents, but also from their teachers and peers. Reading good literature can be a powerful way to develop empathy, as is studying history or being present with a friend on the playground who is having a hard time. This great clip helps explain why empathy is so important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw&feature=youtu.be

22.01.2022 PREP INVESTIGATIONS Our Preps have so much fun during investigations, this time offers students an opportunity to participate in play-based learning. Here are four ways play-based learning benefits children in the early years. Encourages language skills- Engaging in active play from an early age encourages the development of language skills. During pre-school years, a child’s vocabulary grows and develops as they play together with peers and interact with adults. Adults have ...the opportunity to support language development through play; they can do this by asking questions, encouraging conversation and introducing unfamiliar words. The context of play allows for this to happen in a natural way and learning is amplified as it is enjoyable and relevant to the child’s interests. Supports pre-literacy skills- Participating in play that involves music and rhyme supports the development of pre-literacy skills, such as listening skills and sound recognition. Activities such as singing songs and reciting rhymes play a big part in laying the foundations for reading and basic literacy. Rhyme, rhythm and repetition help children to develop their memorisation skills and their ability to differentiate sounds. Develops social and emotional skills- Engagement in play is closely associated with the development of social and emotional skills. The ability to develop positive relationships has also been linked to play-based learning. As children play with each other they learn to get along with one another, use words to communicate their needs, cooperate and resolve conflicts. Emotional competence and empathy are developed through play as children learn about the feelings, emotions and motivations of others. It is essential to provide opportunities for young children to engage in dramatised play to demonstrate ways of caring and showing empathy. Playing is also a known stress release and children can engage in calm play when the day becomes ‘too much’ for them. Calm play can be therapeutic and allows time for the brain to process information and recharge. Fosters creativity and imagination- Research has linked play to fostering creativity and imagination, valued traits that are vital in the modern world. Using imagination, children are able to find solutions to a variety of problems they encounter. Fostering imagination in its ‘natural habitat’ of play at an early age is fundamental to developing curiosity and raising a generation of creative problem-solvers. It is important to remember that play needs to be freely chosen and bring enjoyment to children. Learning through play creates a brain that has increased ‘flexibility and improved potential for learning in later life.’ Play-based learning is widely seen as an essential tool for early years teaching and learning as it greatly benefits children in developing essential life skills.

21.01.2022 ACTS OF SELF-CARE An important message for all parents- remember to look after yourself. Acts of self-care, including exercise and relaxation, should be prioritised. Conflict is normal, but it is healthy for children to witness resolution, especially with clear, calm communication to aid understanding for all family members. 20.01.2022 SPOONVILLE @ QOP People around the world are turning spoons into people and characters to live in Spoonville. Children decorate spoons and start their own spoon village called Spoonville, or add them to an existing one in a location people can see on their daily walks. It started in England and has now also come to Altona Meadows! The idea is to help children, and even adults in the community stay positive during lockdown by seeing Spoonville's populations grow. ... To celebrate our schools feast day, we created our own Spoonsville village. Children created spoons into images of Mary and placed them in front of our statue of Mary.

19.01.2022 SELF- CARE & MENTAL HEALTH FOR KIDS The coronavirus pandemic has thrust families into an extraordinary era that will be life-changing for all of us and can affect children's well-being. The disruptions kids are experiencing right now are real: seeing their parents under stress, being isolated from peers and friends and family, being separated from the structure and routine of their days, seeing people in masks, and overhearing unsettling news.... At QOP, we feel it is important that we support children and families and provide a safe learning environment where children feel supported and are able to connect with friends and educators. It's important to not only check-in with your children and each other as well as staying connected with friends and family.
