17.01.2022 Fantastic opinion piece written by Nyadol Nyuon, lawyer and human rights advocate, published in the Age. Nyadol states "multiculturalism is not a matter of adhering to a public policy position. It is personal. It is an intuitive act of reciprocity and necessity.... The purpose of multiculturalism is to live with each other without the fear of each other. To know that beyond skin colour and all the new names we now use to hide racism, that as human beings our differences hurt us when they are weaponised to divide." https://www.theage.com.au//australia-on-the-brink-of-decid

03.01.2022 Today is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Thirty-three years ago, on 26 June 1987, the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect. Although the Convention has been ratified by 162 countries, including Australia, torture is still prevalent across the world. The last decade has been characterised as the Decade of Displacement with at least 100 million people forcibly displaced worldwide. Re...grettably, torture is not only a feature of forced displacement, it can be an ongoing feature of the journey in the search for protection and safety. This year, on the commemoration of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we need to hear the voices of young people. Children and young people are also victims and survivors of torture, and they are impacted by the trauma experienced by parents and relatives who have been tortured. The impact of torture is collective and intergenerational. One of QPASTTs aims is the prevention of the intergenerational transmission of trauma. We have a duty to denounce torture, to make torture visible so that survivors, their families and communities find healing, reparation and justice. Making torture visible also forces society and public policy responses. In our search for the eradication of torture, We need to make sure the next generation are survivors of the account, not victims. (D. Ndoye, African Centre for the Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts (CAPREC), Senegal). QPASTT, 26 June 2020

03.01.2022 QPASTT STATEMENT - COVID-19 media reporting and its impact on Queenslanders from African backgrounds 5th August 2020 The Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (QPASTT) is very concerned with the anxiety, fear and stigma caused to all Queenslanders from African backgrounds by the recent media reports, including the naming and shaming, of two African Australian young women accused of breaching COVID-19 restrictions in Queensland. ... Those who contravene restrictions should face the consequences of course. But the treatment of these young women in the media, which has been different from others who have been also caught breaching restrictions, has resulted in the otherisation of people of colour, fear-based racism and xenophobic behaviour. This has reinforced the sentiment that young people from African backgrounds need to continually prove their right to call Australia home, questioning their identity and their right to belong. Many who fled their country of origin due to violence and persecution, and have experienced trauma as a result, have been retriggered by this situation. Releasing the young womens personal information has not only had an impact on themselves, their families and communities, but has also undermined the effective public health advocacy and awareness efforts with new and emerging communities to understand the current COVID-19 situation, and the need for testing and community responsibility. The biased media coverage has hurt us all. QPASTT strongly condemns all forms of racism, cyberbullying, victimisation and mistreatment of people from all backgrounds. We stand in solidarity with all Queenslanders from African backgrounds who are an integral part of our diverse and vibrant Queensland community. Queensland African Communities Council
