24.01.2022 It was a pleasure to talk through the support services available via my team with Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland's new Business Support Officers. There are now eight dedicated small business support officers being stationed at chambers of commerce from Cairns out to Mount Isa, right down to the Gold Coast. Co-funded between CCIQ and the Queensland Government, this is a really welcome hands-on initiative set to strengthen small business support across Queensland’s regions. I look forward to working closely with the new team. #avoiceforsmallbiz

21.01.2022 While visiting regional areas in Queensland, I heard from many small businesses in the highly-impacted international tourism sector. So I was pleased to see this new grant open today for eligible regional Queensland tourism businesses (including sole traders). If your businesses has suffered a loss of income because of COVID-19 international travel restrictions, grants of up to $10,000 are on offer. You'll need to be quick though as the grants will be assessed on a first come, first served basis. Find out more at https://www.dsdti.qld.gov.au//covid-19-international-touri #avoiceforsmallbiz

16.01.2022 JUST ANNOUNCED! The COVID commercial lease regulation has been extended from 30 September to 31 December. Eligible small business tenants can now seek a reduction of rent through until the end of the year, however there are some changes to how relief is applied. The Commissioner has stepped through the key parts that have changed, and touches on important reminders about what hasn’t changed in this explanatory video. Our office has facilitated over 100 mediation conference...s to resolve commercial lease disputes, with many more booked in the coming weeks. This service will continue until 31 December when the extension period ends. Places for mediation bookings may become limited as we near the end of the year. Our website is a great place to start if you think you need assistance at www.business.qld.gov.au/qsbc #avoiceforsmallbiz

14.01.2022 Great news for small businesses in Queensland, with further easing of restrictions from 4pm on Tuesday 17 November 2020. This includes allowing 1 person per 2 square metres at indoor premises like restaurants, cafes, and pubs, and 100% capacity at seated, ticketed indoor events. More information available below.

13.01.2022 A great win for Ipswich small businesses today. I am extremely pleased to join with Mayor Teresa Harding - Ipswich City Council and Councillor Nicole Jonic - Ipswich Division 2 from Ipswich City Council to co-sign the very first Small Business Friendly Councils Charter together with Ipswich Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Today marks the start of a beneficial collaboration to help small businesses. Being small business friendly ...is an important commitment by the Council, and includes being more mindful of small business issues and priorities when making decisions for the local community, and in dealing with small businesses. Over the past few months, we have worked with the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), local councils such as Ipswich, and Chambers of Commerce across Queensland to develop this initiative to help small businesses. I have spoken with many Councils who are keen to get involved, I’m hoping this will be the first of many charters signed in Queensland to support small businesses in every community. #supportsmall #smallbusinessfriendly

08.01.2022 Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce’s Business at Dusk event this week at the University of Southern Queensland - Australia was a sell-out. I was pleased to join a panel discussion about adapting to new business opportunities, and share commercial leasing dispute trends and insights. Whilst in town, I met with our Toowoomba based dispute resolution team members, and workshopped emerging challenges for tenants and landlords. #avoiceforsmallbiz

07.01.2022 Just announced, the moratorium on evictions for commercial leaseholders has been extended until the end of 2020. It means that commercial leaseholders under affected leases can’t have their lease terminated if they fall into arrears as a result of COVID-19. We’ll bring you more detail of what this will mean for landlords and tenants in the coming days. Find out more: https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/90766

06.01.2022 This will be a great session in Toowoomba, join me this Wednesday at 5.30pm, tickets available at the link below. Thanks to the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and USQ Student Guild for hosting.

06.01.2022 Phone and internet access is vital for the operation of most small businesses. The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) is seeking feedback from small and medium sized businesses on their experiences with telecommunications providers during COVID-19. Share your feedback at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACCAN-SME-Survey #avoiceforsmallbiz

05.01.2022 Today, I spent some time with the Women’s Plumbing Alliance, they are part of the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland. Here I am with Penny Cornah, CEO of Master Plumbers' and Maria Karatzis from DESBT. We discussed some of the hot topics faced by women in the plumbing trade including: finding and keeping skilled staff, keeping up with workflow (plumbers are busier than ever!), time management and work/life balance. #avoiceforsmallbiz

02.01.2022 Small business tenants and landlords are more likely to reach an agreement through mediation when both parties understand the mediation process. So we've created a handy mythbusting video to explain what mediation is, and what it isn't. We provide a free mediation service for eligible small business lease disputes. Check it out! #avoiceforsmallbiz

02.01.2022 Getting access to the right skills, in a fast and affordable way is important to all small business owners. I was pleased to provide this and other small business feedback to TAFE Queensland’s teaching staff as their lunchtime lecture guest presenter today. #avoiceforsmallbiz

01.01.2022 The Queensland Small Business Commissioner was established on a temporary basis in response to COVID-19. We wanted to know if this type of role is something small businesses require post COVID-19, and if so, how could it best serve the needs and priorities of small businesses going into the future? We asked a range of small business representatives and some common themes emerged including the need for an advocate for small business within government, a collaborative intermediary, and assistance with small business friendly dispute resolution. You can view the feedback and key findings at: https://bit.ly/3mZgRCZ #avoiceforsmallbiz
