21.01.2022 Solution to the problem posted on Saturday. Your little sister Molly is one third the age of your mom. In 12 years, Molly will be half the age of your mom. How old is Molly and your mom now? Now...you could spend your time using trial and error, by substituting in potential answers or you could formulate some equations that represent the problem, or in essence use algebra.... Let's represent Molly's current age as "x" and the mother's current age as "y". The first part of the question states "Your little sister Molly is one third the age of your mom." This can be represented as y = 3x Then in 12 years, Molly will be half the age of your mom. y + 12 = 2(x+12) Then substitute the first equation into the second equation. This eliminates the "y" so you only have one variable "x". 3x + 12 = 2x + 24 Rearrange and get x = 12, which means Molly's current age is 12, while the mother's current age is 3 times this, which is 36. Congratulations to the 3 people who got this! Quinton

18.01.2022 Keith Devlin is well accomplished mathematics lecturer at Stanford University. The lectures at this university are published on You tube. There is a Stanford University YouTube channel if you are interested. I have posted two of his lectures (they both go for about an hour and a half). One is on "The birth of Algebra" and the other on Calculus. Keith brings a bit of life to the subject and provides a rich history of these 2 very important subjects for mathematics students. A ...lot of students are put off by these subjects and a lot of areas in mathematics because they don't understand the relevance. These lectures are relevant for students who might want to get ahead. The calculus video might be more relevant for students from Year 10 onwards, whereas the algebra one could be interesting for students from Year 6 upwards. 18.01.2022 Did you know there was an argument in the late 17th century on who invented calculus. As we are all taught, Isaac Newton was essentially the founder, and this was found to be true, however there was dispute for a couple of years of it's true originator. In the early 1670s Gottfrieb Liebnitz, a German, published his findings regarding calculus and it was thought he was the originator of this work, however, Isaac Newton in the late 1660s had developed the theory, however had no...t made it public. He was encouraged to do so by another member of the royal society, and it was found that Isaac Newton had priority. However Liebnitz's work was not for nought, the symbol, the integrand, used in integration was developed by him, as well as more abbreviated forms of communication in calculus. Newton tended not to use symbols and used more written communication. See more

14.01.2022 A lot of students lose interest in mathematics as there is seen to be no relevance to what is attempted to be learned. Once this happens, interest is lost and the struggle begins. When I tutor I like to give the purpose behind what is being taught and how this is relevant to modern science. Also historical content is interesting, including what person discovered a formula. Yes maths can be interesting! www.mathshelponline.com.au

03.01.2022 What are the advantages of one on one maths tuition via skype? - Have your lesson tailored to your requirements. Tuition class sizes can get too big, effectively losing the benefits of additional classes. - Tutor's costs are reduced. No need for the tutor to travel to your place of residence, or the tutor to rent out office space. This reduces the overall costs of the tutor, therefore reducing the tuition fee paid by the student. - The first half hour is free. There is no obligation to continue tuition with lock in contracts.

03.01.2022 Order of operations...calculators these days look after calcuations involving +, -, * / ()...etc. Without a calculator what is the answer to -5+2*3-(7+3)*2. Explain how you got your answer.
