06.01.2022 Just wanted to share this post that we saw posted in the Balloon Artist Facebook group by Rachel Porter It puts why attending training & conventions like our very own OzJam is important perfectly from a well respected international balloon artist. (We have copied the original post verbatim)... I just got back from Float, a growing balloon convention that was held in St. Louis this year, and will be moving to Chicago in 2022. As a veteran who most of the time can look at something and figure it out, I still invested in the All Access pass and popped into many classes, and helped a bit with the final night gala. I also chatted with a LOT of people about business. Why would I, a successful balloon company, spend $$$$ on continuing education? Well, many reasons. 1) I know I dont know it all. There is ALWAYS something to learn. 2) Being re-exposed to designs, techniques, etc keeps them fresh in my mind. 3) Networking with other professionals and getting to know them as people just like me, opens the door for me to reach out to the "big names" and ask for help or advice. And they can reach out to me also, of course. 4) Encouraging others who are struggling in their business for whatever reason, really helps ME see that I am valued, and have a lot to offer others, not just in our industry. 5) Eating hotel food for a week reminds me that I am creative in the kitchen as well as in decor. 6) Having time away from home and laundry and cleaning and errands and all of that, is good for my soul. REST is so important. Its a big piece of the balance that Zivi teaches. 7) Competing (which I didnt do) is a great way to finally get to design something over the top without any regard to what the customer wants or can afford. You get to cut loose and build your vision, and someone else pays for the inventory. Seeing some of the competition designs, my business brain was redesigning some of them to figure out a way to get that WOW at different price points. 9) Had the pleasure of attending the Nieves sisters class, and I learned that techniques that work very, very well in Miami dont work in colder climates. Did you know that? 10) This convention opened two new doors for me to teach. 11) I had two hilariously funny roommates, and we laughed like teenage girls. THAT FELT GREAT!!! 12) I also chatted with someone who needs what I have to offer to make their project work. 13) But most of all, going to conventions keeps me humble, keeps me kind, and keeps me moving forward in goals and in life.
