10.01.2022 Offset accounts and redraw facilities can save you interest thereby allowing you to reduce your debt ahead of time whilst maintaining the flexability of accessing the additional repayments in need. Key point, in the case of an "offset account", is that you continue making your normal loan repayments but direct any surplus money you may have to the offset account. Money in the offset account then reduces (offsets) the loan balance on which daily interest is calculated. That is, if your loan balance is $ 100,000 and you have $ 20,000 in an "offset account" interest is calculated on the net balance, $ 80,000. Most lenders provide a full transaction offset account which means you can use the account as a normal transaction account.

Once you have identified what surplus income you have, direct it into either an offset account or your loan (with a redraw facility attached) to reduce interest costs. Make sure you have either of these facilities linked to your loan so that you can access the extra funds in case of an emergency or unforseen event.
