25.01.2022 Osteoporosis affects approximately 1.2 million Australians. It predominantly affects the older population and affects women more than men. But what is it? Osteoporosis is a disease that makes bones brittle due to losing minerals (like calcium) quicker than the body can replace them. This results in reduced bone density or mass. This means people with Osteoporosis are at an increased risk of breaking their bones. For example, even a small bump or fall can result in a serious ...broken bone for someone with Osteoporosis. So how can you prevent developing Osteoporosis? By doing 3 simple things to support the growth and strength of your bones! 1) Eating a diet rich of calcium or taking calcium supplements if this is not possible. 2) Getting your natural source of Vitamin D from the sun! If this is not possible or levels remain low despite getting outside regularly, vitamin D supplements may be recommended by your GP. 3) Regular exercise (at least 3 times a week) that is either weight bearing exercise (exercise on your feet e.g. walking) or progressive strength exercise. If you would like to know more about Osteoporosis, be sure to ask your GP to discuss whether you may be at risk and what you can do to prevent developing Osteoporosis. 25.01.2022 With the rising number of COVID-19 cases in NSW, we please ask that you remember to keep doing the following few things when you come in for your next appointment: 1) If you are feeling unwell and have any signs/symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g. cough, fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of taste/smell) and/or you need to self-isolate, please do not come to your appointment and enter the practice. Instead, please call us on 9626 8867 to cancel and reschedule your appointment.... 2) Sanitise your hands as you enter/exit the practice and before/after every interaction with our staff members (before and after paying at the reception desk). 3) Wear a face mask whilst you are in the practice. Masks are provided for your use at the reception desk. Wearing a mask in a health care facility is now a rule set by NSW Health as of last Friday 24/7, to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in NSW. 4) Keep a distance of 1.5m away from other patients and reception staff at all times whilst you are in the practice. In combination with our cleaning practices, together we can keep you and our staff safe, keep our practice open and reduce the transmission of COVID-19. 24.01.2022 Welcome to post 1 of the Frozen Shoulder Series! What is Frozen Shoulder? Frozen shoulder or 'Adhesive Capsulitis' refers to the difficulty of lifting your arm in different directions and above your head. In the initial phases this is typically due to pain, but later it is typically due to stiffness. There are three phases of Frozen shoulder:... 1) The painful or freezing phase - In this phase gradual shoulder pain develops with periods of sharp pain when moving the shoulder. People typically find sleeping difficult throughout this phase. 2) The stiffening or frozen phase - In this phase pain starts to decrease. However, the shoulder capsule becomes stiff resulting in difficulty moving the shoulder joint. 3) The resolution or thawing phase - In this phase, the shoulder capsule starts to loosen and movement at the shoulder joint is restored. 24.01.2022 Welcome to post 1 of the muscle strain series! A muscle strain is equivalent to a sprain of your ligaments e.g. rolling your ankle. It can occur in any muscle of the body and is typically due to mechanical stress or overload of the muscle. A muscle strain can be diagnosed into 3 grades:... 1) Grade 1 is a mild strain: This means that only a handful of muscle fibres are strained. There will be no loss of movement or strength in the muscle, but pain and tenderness of the muscle will be present. 2) Grade 2 is a moderate strain: This means that approximately 50% of the muscle fibres have torn. In addition to significant pain, small decreases in strength and movement can be present. 3) Grade 3 is a severe strain: This means there has been a complete rupture of the muscle. Severe pain will be felt with grade 3 strains in addition to noticeable loss of strength and movement of the muscle. 20.01.2022 Welcome to post 3 of the muscle strain series! If you voted in the poll: 'ice, rest and compression', you are correct! In the first 48 hours after sustaining a muscle strain, you should adopt the RICE protocol:... R= rest I= ice C= compression E= elevation This protocol aims to reduce swelling and pain within the initial stages so that you can start the healing process as quickly as possible. Following the first 48 hours, booking in with a Physiotherapist to receive rehabilitation to the muscle is also recommended. A physiotherapist will be able to implement strategies to continue reducing pain and swelling, maintain/regain movement and strength, and implement injury prevention strategies to help prevent the injury occurring again. Without a tailored rehabilitation protocol, the chance of a muscle strain re-occurring is increased.

The course involved learning a range of different taping techniques for every major joint of the body. Elizabeth attends courses and lectures every year to ensure she is up to date and provides the best treatment for her patients. 10.01.2022 Welcome to post 2 of the Patellofemoral pain series! If you answered knee in our previous post you are correct! Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is also known as knee cap pain. The patellofemoral joint is where the knee cap (patella) sits within the socket of the thigh bone (femur). There are many causes of PFP including overloading the patellofemoral joint, anatomical variation and muscular weakness. In some cases, PFP will develop due a combination of these causes rather than a ...singular cause. Patients with PFP tend to present with complaints of pain at the front/ sides or back of their kneecap that increases when patellofemoral load increases. Patellofemoral load increases during daily activities such as walking up and down stairs, running, kneeling, squatting and even sitting with your knees bent. 01.01.2022 Yesterday both our past and current team at Quakers Hill Physiotherapy came together to celebrate a number of occasions! One of the biggest celebrations that brought us altogether, is that we were finally able to celebrate our 25th birthday from April this year! Happy belated birthday to Quakers Hill Physiotherapy! Continuing on the birthday train, we were also celebrating our amazing Physiotherapist Elizabeth and receptionist Lizs birthdays that were earlier this month. Ha...ppy birthday to you both! We were also welcoming our new receptionist Taylor to the team at Quakers Hill Physiotherapy! We are very excited to have you so welcome! Next, our receptionist Karina has recently graduated from the Doctor of Physiotherapy degree at Macquarie University and is now a qualified Physiotherapist - well done Karina! And last but not least, we were celebrating the wonderful news that our receptionist Tegan is pregnant! We are all so happy for you and have no doubt that you will be an amazing mother.
