21.01.2022 Then the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. Luke 2:10-12 NKJV The 2nd chapter of the gospel of Luke says that Jesus was wrapped in "swaddling clothes" and laid in a manger. Even today, hospitals ...use a cloth that they call a "swaddling" cloth. There are actually lots of references to "swathing-bands" or "swaddling clothes" ( / spargano'oh) in other 1st century texts, and they always refer to wrapping babies. However, the idea that the swaddling cloths = "travellers cloth around the waist for burial" is a quote from a 1993 book by "Arch Bishop D.A. Miller" who writes self-published commentaries. There's no widespread evidence that people wrapped cloths around their waists in case they died on a perilous journey. However, following the thought of ArchBishop DA Miller, when Jesus was born, there was no room in the Inn, and so Mary and Joseph used a nearby stable for Jesus' birth. With no other cloth to use, Jesus was wrapped in Joseph's "swaddling clothes" - the cloth normally reserved for a person's death. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords came into this world in a lowly manger and was wrapped with burial clothes - in truth, He was born to die. To die for the sins of all mankind. Mild he lays his glory by Born that man no more may die Born to raise the sons of earth Born to give them second birth Born that man no more may die From Hark the Herald Angels Sing
